Of course, Manchester United opened things up in England last weekend by winning the FA Community Shield with a 2-0 victory over Wigan Athletic.

This morning, the Premier League kicked off and the Scousers opened the season with a 1-0 win over Stoke City. Former Chelsea boy Daniel Sturridge scored the lone goal and keeper Simone Mignolet stopped an 89th minute penalty to secure the win for the Reds. Good start from Mignolet, in his first match since joining Liverpool from Sunderland this Summer.

Today is my daughter's 12th birthday. We stopped at a couple of soccer shops near my house and here was her take from there: Chelsea 2012/13 home jersey, 2012/13 away jersey, 2013/14 home jersey, a mini scarf, pin, and patch.

Yeah that was good stuff. I liked the view of the Chelsea players (Torres and ?) splitting the Hull City wall open when the ball was struck. Nice start to the season with a 2-0 win.

On Wednesday Chelsea host Aston Villa, who beat Arsenal 3-1 yesterday. Should be a tough match. Then, next Monday, it's a visit to Old Trafford to face Manchester United.

The exciting thing for me this season is that I only have one day a month when I have to be somewhere at a specific time. Therefore, I won't be missing many (if any) Chelsea matches. :)

A lot of soccer going on today today at 2:30pm ET with UEFA Champions League action. Fox Soccer Channel has Pacos de Ferreira vs. Zenit St. Petersburg. Fox Sports 1 has PSV Eindhoven vs. AC Milan. Fox Sports 2 is airing Lyon vs. Real Sociedad. Fox Sports Ohio is airing Viktoria Plzen vs. Maribor.

Then tonight at 8pm ET, got W Connection vs. Houston in CONCACAF Champions League on Fox Sports 1, and then at 10pm ET, Los Angeles vs. Cartagines on Fox Soccer Plus.

So it's gonna be a very soccer heavy night for me. :)

Since I'm currently manager of PSV Eindhoven in my manager career on FIFA 13, I'm gonna be rolling with PSV Eindhoven vs. AC Milan on Fox Sports 1 at 2:30, then will catch W Connection vs. Houston also on Fox Sports 1 at 8pm. I'll probably also do some flipping over to Pacos de Ferreira vs. Zenit St. Petersburg on Fox Soccer Channel, since Fox Sports 1 is channel 1317 and Fox Soccer Channel is 1318 in the HD channels for me on Time Warner, so I can just jump back and forth real quick.

A good match today. AC Milan struck first about 15 minutes in, but PSV Eindhoven equalized in the second half and the first leg of this Playoff Round 1 battle ends in a 1-1 draw. Now to wait for the second leg at San Siro next Wednesday.

I had that match on while I was working today. I'm watching the Zenit match, which I recorded, now. Of course, I'll be watching Houston tonight.

Tomorrow is more of the same with Champions League Qualifying that includes Arsenal and a Premier League match with Chelsea and Aston Villa.

All of that is stuff I would have missed prior to last week. Fuck you, The Man! :)

Wait, if it's a ranking, I don't get it. Why is it a percentage and not just a number? Do you want it high like when you take a standardized test and you're in the 98th percentile?

I didn't exactly word my initial post very well. Those percentages are the odds that those nations advance to the knockout stage, based on their SPI.Sorry.

Feel free to fire off questions though. FIFA is a fantastic game and if this gets you interested, that would be awesome.

Big upset in the FIFA Club World Cup as Raja Casablanca beats Monterrey, 2-1 in extra time. That sets up the semis: Guangzhou vs Bayern Munich and Raja Casablanca vs Atletico Mineiro.

Lots of transfer news today. Mata to Man United, Salah to Chelsea, Essien appearing to be headed to AC Milan, among the noteworthy ones to me. However, the best part of the day was Arsene Wenger's bellyaching about Chelsea's sale of Mata to the Red Devils. Knowing Chelsea were done playing United this season, he said it was unfair. He also complained about selling a quality player to a title rival. Uh, dumbass, does RVP ring a bell? :fp:

Huge win for Chelsea today, completing the double over Manchester City. City was unbeaten in 19 matches, they were 11-0-0 at Etihad, and hadn't been held without a goal at home since November 2010 (61 matches).

Chelsea gets the result 1-0 on a 32nd minute goal from Branislav Ivanovich. In fact, it could have been much worse as Chelsea put 3 off the framework and controlled most of the match.

Chelsea have pulled level with City for second (though they are well behind on goal difference), two points behind Arsenal.

My favorite part of yesterday's 4-0 destruction of the Yid Army was hearing the Chelsea supporters sing the Willian song when he came on in the second half. If you don't know the story, Willian was flown in by Spurs last Summer but Chelsea called him and he declined to sign with Tottenham and, instead, signed with Chelsea. You can hear the Chelsea supporters singing this song whenever Willian is on the pitch. It was most satisfying/hilarious to hear while they were playing Tottenham yesterday. :)

We are down to the eight quarterfinalists in the UEFA Champions League. The draw is at 6 AM Central this Friday. This is the last round that there is a draw. Going forward it will be a straight bracket. Also, clubs who play in the same league domestically can face each other starting with the quarters.

Here is who is left:

Atletico Madrid
Barcelona
Bayern Munich
Borussia Dortmund
Chelsea
Manchester United (lololololol)
PSG
Real Madrid

I'd hate to have the proverbial "sometimes you get what you ask for" moment and get bit in the ass by saying this, but Manchester United will be a great draw for whoever gets them next round. I'll be stunned if United advances again though I'd give them the best odds of beating (in order) Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea (just because of familiarity) and Paris Saint-Germain.

If they get Barcelona, Bayern Munich or Real Madrid they are FUCKED. Having said that, RM has struggled against the other top 5 sides in Spain this year and I'd be delighted to see one of these three clubs out assuming, of course, that Chelsea advances to the Semis.

My dream draw:

Chelsea-Atletico Madrid
United-Dortmund

Barcelona-Bayern Munich
Real Madrid-PSG

A draw like that would make Chelsea favorites to reach the Final.

According to what I saw at uefa.com, there is a draw for the semifinals this year. I'm not sure if they did this last year or if this is the first year they are doing that. I know that, as recently as 2012, there was not one. I don't remember last year as well because Chelsea lost out in the group stage but, finishing third in their group, went on to win the Europa League. With Chelsea eliminated last year, I paid less attention to the draws.

Tough weekend for the Blues, taking a 1-0 loss at Crystal Palace. Fortunately, City drew with Arsenal but Liverpool beat Tottenham to move ahead of Chelsea in the table.

The title is still City's to lose as they have 2 games in hand. I'm not too concerned with falling 2 points behind the Reds since Chelsea still have a match at Anfield. However, having Chelsea win out while the Citizens drop 5 points will be alot to ask.

A late goal by PSG in Paris yesterday turned Chelsea's situation in their UCL quarterfinal tie from "manageable" to "difficult". PSG scored at 90+3 to secure a 3-1 win over the Blues with the second leg being played at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday.

Manchester United drew at Old Trafford with Bayern Munich, 1-1, on Tuesday. That was a fairly good result for the Red Devils but I still suspect that the defending European champions will take them out next week.

Real Madrid blasted 2013 runners-up Borussia Dortmund 3-0 giving the Germans a tall order to face next week. Dortmund would need a miracle result to get by to the semis.

I think alot of people were surprised by Atletico Madrid's 1-1 draw at Camp Nou but I wasn't. They've beaten Barca twice in La Liga and are top of the Spanish league's table, one point clear of Barcelona and three clear of Real Madrid. The second leg of this tie should be fantastic.

What a game today at The Bridge! Down 3-1 on aggregate, Chelsea scored a pair with Schurrle (32') bagging the first and Ba (87') the second. Chelsea held on for a 2-0 win pushing them through on road goals. Schurrle came on in the 17th minute when Hazard went out with an injury and Ba was a late substitute for Lampard.

Real Madrid, sans Ronaldo, escaped Germany by a 3-2 aggregate despite a 2-0 loss today to Borussia Dortmund. Dortmund had a 2-0 lead at halftime but could not pull level in the second period.

These two clubs will join tomorrow's winners in the UEFA Champions League semifinals. Bayern Munich hosts Manchester United while Barcelona visits Atletico Madrid with both ties being level at 1 after the first leg.

The semifinal draw is this Friday.

steelerfan
04-09-2014, 04:11 PM
Manchester United took a 1-0 lead in the 57th minute today at Bayern but the defending European Champions turned it on after that. The German side scored 3 times in 17 minutes, including the equalizer just 70 seconds after United went ahead, to bury David Moyes' squad.

In the other quarterfinal today, Thibaut Courtois (on loan from Chelsea) kept a clean sheet against Messi, Neymar & company as Atletico Madrid eliminated Barcelona with a 1-0 win.

That leaves a final four of Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich, Chelsea and Real Madrid. Bayern have to be the favorites until they are out.

Looking forward to the draw on Friday. :)

Yep. Going to be interesting. I think both matchups are a coin flip but I'd favor Bayern Munich over Real Madrid. Chelsea will have their hands full with Atletico.

As I expected, UEFA has called the clause in Keeper Thibaut Courtois' loan agreement that would cause Atletico to pay Chelsea £4.5 if he plays against the Blues "null". Courtois has been on loan with Atletico from Chelsea for the last couple years and is a hot commodity among goalkeepers. Rumors have Real Madrid and Barcelona (pending their transfer ban appeal) among the clubs making a play for Courtois. I'll be pissed if Chelsea sells him, Petr Cech can't play forever.

Chelsea still needs City to drop a couple points, but their title hopes got a boost with the result. Of course, Chelsea needs to win out starting with a trip to Swans that kicks off in about ten minutes.

Chico Flores was sent off with his second booking in the 16th minute but the sending off actually worked against the Blues. Chelsea have struggled this season when the opposition sit behind the ball. Swans did just that, content to play for a draw. Fortunately, Chelsea still got the critical 3 points to keep in the thick of the title race.

Manchester United says manager David Moyes has left the club after less than a year in charge.

No surprise. Word started leaking on Monday that this was coming. After 11 seasons at Everton, Moyes left for United and took Fellaini with him. Replacing Sir Alex proved to be too much as United was officially locked out of next season's UEFA Champions League last with a loss at (where else) Everton. United will not participate in the UCL next year, marking the first time in 19 years that they are out.

To make matters worse for Moyes, Everton are battling Arsenal for the last EPL UCL spot right now. It would be very fitting if the Toffees lock that spot down.

I will miss Moyes and can only hope that the level of incompetence he brought to Old Trafford will continue without him.

You must not be familiar with their depth. :)

If no one comes back before then, the likely lineup:

GK Schwarzer
LB Azpilicueta
CB Luiz
CB Cahill
RB Ivanovich
LDM Mikel
RDM Ramires
LM Schurrle
CAM Oscar
RM Willian
ST Torres

They would still have names like Cole and Ba available too. This is factoring in the fact that Ramires could face a suspension from the FA (won't affect UCL) and that both Matic and Salah are cup tied and can not play in the UCL for Chelsea.

Wednesday, Chelsea will host Atletico Madrid in the second leg of the other semifinal. The sides played to a scoreless draw in Madrid last Tuesday.

Interesting for Chelsea, is that EVERYONE - including Cech and Terry - were on the training pitch for the Blues on Tuesday. Cech was asked by Sky Sports if he is fit and he responded, "of course". It will be very interesting to see what type of squad Jose Mourinho is able to field.

Fulham and Cardiff have officially been relegated and will play 2014/15 in the League Championship.

I didn't want to see the Whites go down since they are West London rivals of Chelsea.

Not all is lost in the West London Derby. Brentford, a team I follow because they are named so beautifully, are promoted to the Championship and can resume their rivalry with Fulham. If QPR stays in the Championship they will have 3 of the 4 Derby teams in a league. Chelsea will be the only West London team in the Premier.

Which is why I'm hoping QPR get promoted. I would like to see the Rams go up and wouldn't mind seeing Brighton & Hove. I just don't want to see Wigan (which means they will probably win the playoff, lol).

I'm also good with Leicester ("and Leicester!") gaining promotion but Burnley doesn't intrigue me at all.

For all intents and purposes Chelsea's bleak title hopes ended today (could officially end tomorrow if Liverpool gets a result) with a goalless draw against Norwich City.

I suppose the silver lining is that Chelsea have secured 3rd place in the Premier League meaning that Arsene Wenger can enjoy his coveted "4th Place Trophy" and Arsenal can have the extra matches that come with qualifying for the group stage of next season's Champions League.

With just one match remaining in the season, I'm going to give a few thoughts on what I expect this Summer. I think Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole will be allowed to leave on free transfers but I believe that John Terry will be brought back on another one year deal.

I think that Fernando Torres will be sold and EITHER Samuel Eto'o will leave on a free transfer OR Demba Ba will be sold. I think that Romelu Lukaku will not be loaned next season and will finally play for Chelsea but I also believe that the Blues will pony up for a world class striker this Summer.

I think the time is coming, perhaps this Summer, to make the decision to keep Thibaut Courtois at Stamford Bridge. I would love to see he and Petr Cech in Chelsea blue next season.

I really want to see more of Ruben Loftus-Cheek in friendlys this offseason too. That kid has got BRILLIANT written all over him.

What a bed-shitting by the Scousers yesterday! Leading Palace, 3-0 in the 78th minute, they conceded 3 times in 9 minutes to settle for a draw. That kept Chelsea's dismal hopes alive until, at least, tomorrow when City hosts Villa.

The ONLY way Chelsea can win the title if if they win at Cardiff on Sunday AND Liverpool loses to the Geordies AND City gets 1 point or less (ie a draw and a loss or 2 losses) in their final 2 fixtures (home to Villa and West Ham).

The most likely scenario is that Manchester City will win their second Premier League title in 3 years. I'm good as long as ANY club not named Manchester United wins. :)

I did not want to jinx them but time to swap out the avatar until college football returns. Looking at two titles in three years? That is something you would expect from the Red's. All those years of watching mediocrity is starting to pay off.

City's title that you guys are referring to was in 1968, iirc. 44 year drought. When Aguero scored that title-clincher 2 years ago, that was the most amazing sports moment I can remember. I squealed like a school girl, with United losing the title. Awesome stuff.

Looking at the Football League Championship Playoff, Derby County advanced to the Final today with a 4-1 (6-2 agg.) victory over Brighton & Hove. QPR and Wigan Athletic battled to a 0-0 draw on Friday, with the second leg being played tomorrow. Despite it being played on QPR's home pitch, I think Wigan may have the advantage, seeing as all they would need is a single goal and either win or force a draw and they'll advance on road goals. QPR will have to either shut out Wigan 1-0 or win outright to advance.

Sevilla won on penalties but Benfica got screwed. On every attempt by Benfica, the Sevilla keeper came off his line as soon as the kick taker started forward toward the ball. The rule is that the keeper cannot come off of his line until the ball is kicked.

Financial Fair Play catching up to the "powder" Blues, PSG.

http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/manchester-city-offered-settlement-uefa-3472657

"FFP rules violations: Manchester City fined 60m euros, ordered to limit UCL squad, cap wages for 2 years"

I haven't had a chance to read the details to see how restrictive this is. UEFA has never really enforced Financial Fair Play rules before so I'm skeptical about this having any teeth behind it.

It doesn't sound like it will affect City or PSG all that much (the two clubs with the biggest penalties). Actually, PSG will have it a bit worse than City. They both have to limit spending for the next couple years (City can "only" spend 60 million this Summer) and have to reduce their UCL squads to 21 available players next year (25 is standard). However, both clubs only used 21 players in the Champions League and City always shits the bed in Europe anyway.

The main thing, I think, will be the strictness of how much of a loss, financially, each club will be allowed. PSG actually has to break even the year after next which could be tough to do. Also, both sides' wage budgets are frozen to what they were this year.

Ultimately, unless there is something I'm missing, this is no deterrent to anyone. Which, really, has been the consensus since FFP was introduced.

In half an hour, the FA Cup Final is on FOX. Arsenal vs Hull City. If you don't know, Arsenal has gone trophy-less for 9 years. I hope that continues. :)

If the Tigers pull the upset, it will be a huge financial boost to a club who was in the FLC last season, as they would qualify for the Europa League.

I looked at that over the weekend with my daughter but wasn't sure if it was official because the Chelsea website only had the home kit and the goalkeeper kit.

We saw an alternate kit that looked pretty good too.

The keeper one is RED, but it actually looks pretty good with a sort of "wing" design similar to the shoulders on an Oregon jersey.

I think my daughter was angling for the red one which, of course, she will get eventually. :)

No, I don't. And I agree with Klinsmann's plans. The only way this team ever improves to the point of hoping to compete for world Cup titles is by building up our young players and giving them experience on the world stage in preparation for 2018. Donovan's been a great player with a great career, but he obviously didn't fit the new mold being planned for the USMNT.

As for everyone in social media bashing Klinsmann because he dared to leave a popular big name, aging, player off the roster for a young talent to get experience, well, they're fucking morons. I'll trust someone with the pedigree and track record like Klinsmann over these fucking idiots pretending to be the greatest tactical minds the football world has ever seen from their keyboards.

I follow the EPL, Capital One Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League fairly closely. The EPL, obviously, very closely.

I keep an eye on La Liga, Bundesliga, Serie A, Ligue 1, the FLC, MLS and, to a lesser degree, Liga MX.

Most of my time is devoted to watching whatever competitions Chelsea are in. Now that I work for myself, I was able to watch all of their matches this season except maybe 2 of their early League Cup matches.
