I didn't play football in high school. Too small, I enjoy watching college football and I like learning as much as possible.

It seems like there are a lot of books and write-ups on the different offenses, Air Raid, Pro style, Spread, Option, etc....I enjoy reading about the different types and learning as much as I can, then trying to apply it to this video game the best it will allow, is fun for me.

I'm currently working on the spread offense. I purchased a good read by Gus Malzahn The Hurry-up, No-Huddle An Offensive Philosophy. It's pretty good so far, about 1/2 through it.

My question is, it seems like there are a lot of books and theories on offense. Could anyone suggest some good books for the Defensive side of the ball? I feel like I'm starting to understand offense pretty well, I'm getting the hang of how to attack the defense while on offense whether it's cover 1,2,3,4, man vs zone etc...I have a pretty good idea of how to do it. My problem is on Defense...I feel like I'm picking random plays, to put it bluntly I feel lost and confused.

The basics I understand or attempt to do on defense are, if they are throwing and beating me up towards the sidelines I try and utilize cover 2, if they are wearing me out down the middle I go for cover 3. When it comes to shutting down slants I try and use Zone. If they are playing a lot of curls I try and use Man. Other than that, I'm lost.

One thing I like about this current book by Gus Malzahn is it simplifies the offense. It has you start out with 3 running plays then advancing to 10 basic plays. Same for the passing game it has you starting out with 8 concept and advancing to 33 (of which 16 are the base 8 just flipped). So it's a pretty simple offense it just has to be ran to perfection and attacks the defense at it's weakness.

I read a lot on here and other forums about making your own playbook. I mainly see people creating Offensive playbooks. I rarely see a user created Defensive playbook. One main thing I see w/ the offensive CPB is they all say they want limit their plays, keep the PBs from becoming clutter or overloaded with random play you never really use...basically like a default PB.....I'd like to do the same w/ a defensive PB. When I run the default 4-2-5 for example I don't really know when or when not to use normal, vs over, okie, etc...I don't know in each formation which plays to pick...it really feels like I'm not far off from closing my eyes and saying "There that one looks good....:dunno:"

So if anyone could suggest a good read, either book or online site or anyone here that is willing to help out, I'd really appreciate it. I want to learn.

In the reading that I have been able to find, I've seem to come to the conclusion that I want to run the 4-2-5. It seems to be setup to keep pace w/ spread style, or more importantly hurry-up face paced offenses. So if anyone would like to help point me in the right direction for knowledge on the 4-2-5 I'd really appreciate it.

Thank you gents.

I was able to find this: by Ellis Johnson

http://www.al.com/auburnfootball/index.ssf/2013/02/ellis_johnson_outlines_the_phi.html

It's nice how it breaks down the players and their positions....I'm hoping to learn more of the philosophy and how to implement it. It's fine to read things like, "Our philosophy in trying to stop the run game, we're going to try to out-number it," Johnson said. "We're going to put one more body up there than you can block, and try to disrupt the blocking schemes instead of trying to physically overpower offensive linemen." ....but this doesn't really help me in picking plays on NCAA 14 defense.

I found a good read about how TCU runs their 4-2-5 about 3 or 4 years ago. Not sure where it was though. The main thing I got from it which I use in the game, is when to call over, under, and under slide. They call it based on the offense's passing strength not running strength, so the safety can help over the top. So if you call (4-2-5 Over) and the offense comes out in 2 WR to left and a TE and WR to the right. The side with 2 WR's will be the strong side as they see WR's as a stronger passing threat than TE's. Also the HB in the backfield is negated in determining formations strength. Under slide is used in overload situations or deep passing situations, iirc. It is the under setup, but the linebackers are shifted over and the strong side SS backs up for additional deep coverage.
