The 2012-13 season is already done. The draft is Thursday night. A draft I'm really looking forward to. Some new news today:

Good to see Brian Shaw finally get a head coaching gig, and with a solid team in Denver.

Interested to see what the Cavs do b/c if they don't start getting help for my boy Kyrie soon he's gonna take his talents to.....

Nerlens Noel #1? I think he should be. Only because I drafted him in 2K13 and had no idea who he was, because I don't follow college basketball until around March Madness. I thought it was some kind of mistake how good he was, because I got him with the 15th overall pick. Led my team (Rockets) to the title in his 4th year I think. Him paired with Kyrie and Dion Waiters, the Cavs could have their own little big 3 going. Maybe even entice LeBron to come back home.

No way that kid goes #1. Not happening. He's not athletically gifted enough to be #1. It's gonna be Noel because it's the highest need for Cleveland.

So it could happen, and it is the Caviliers who could be picking next year again at this spot

If Greg Oden didn't have that many injuries, the Noel would definitely by the #1 pick. Personally I would go for Otto with the #1 pick then package the other three picks somehow and get Cody Zeller then sign Zeke Marshall to develop into the defensive 6th man, So a starting five of Waiters, Irving, Porter, Thompson, and C. Zeller Would be solid.

Doesn't Tyler Zeller play for them?

Is his brother better than him?

I think they could use Otto as well and would be a better #1 pick.

On another note, definitely about time Brian Shaw got his opportunity. Sucks it came at the expense of the reigning Coach of the Year.

Isn't the highest need for the Cavs a SF?That was my thinking, although I haven't followed them closely over the last few years.

Makes since to me

Just know they should be stock piling talent with the recent #1's and first rounders they have been getting.

They need far more than shot blocking, need someone who can help score with Irving.

Varejo is old and been injured quite a bit lately. Zeller is terrible and definitely not the answer.

Well I don't think the other Zeller brother is the answer either

I still think they would do better with going with Otto Porter at #1.

Cody is much better than Tyler. He is not a defense type center though that is why I like Zeke Marshall as a FA, He is a legit 7'0 with a 7'5 wingspan and blocked 3.7 shots last season.

That's the thing, is the Cavs mindset right now really "we're just a Center, shotblocker away from competing?"

How many 7 footers they want to collect if they were to take Cody.

Gotcha

That's the thing, is the Cavs mindset right now really "we're just a Center, shotblocker away from competing?"

That's why you take Noel and ride out his injury to see if you can get another Blake Griffin. If so, it's a steal because Noel is more talented than Griffin was out of college with a higher ceiling (he actually plays defense, unlike Griffin).

Having a vet at Noel's position already lets you ride out the injury this year instead of feeling like you're forced to bring him back quickly. The Cavs are most definitely not a shotblocking center away from competing, but they definitely aren't any other single player from competing either. You take the best player available (accounting for growth potential) and that player is either Noel or McElmore.

IF I were the Cavs I'd draft Oladipo, Porter or McLemore. The bigs in this draft have BUSTS written all over them. Other than Zeller and Plumlee (neither will be stars) I could easily see the rest of them being OUT of the league in 3 years.

I would not draft McLemore, he is out of shape and measured two inches shorter then listed. Oladipo is moving up, but I still think Porter is the choice because the upside just like how Hibbert has improved so much over his years.

Chad Ford's final mock:

1 - Noel (CLE)
2 - Oladipo (ORL)
3 - Porter (WAS)
4 - McLemore (CHA)
5 - Len (PHX)
6 - Carter-Williams (NO)
7 - McCollum (SAC)
8 - Bennett (no releation) (DET)
9 - Caldwell-Pope (MIN)
10 - Burke - (POR)

Ford also predicts the Celtics will take Olynyk at 16. I'd definitely be down for that.

Don't count Bennett (no relation) out of mix for No. 1 pick (http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/blog/_/name/nba_draft/id/9428020/strong-indicators-nerlens-noel-nba-draft)

UNLV power forward Anthony Bennett averaged 17.6 points and 8.7 rebounds before a shoulder injury. While Noel and Ukrainian 7-footer Alex Len appear to be the top options for Cleveland general manager Chris Grant, a source told ESPN that Anthony Bennett has more overall support in-house than anyone in the draft.

Sure, there are critics crushing the former UNLV forward due to the fact his weight has ballooned in recent weeks following shoulder surgery.

"There's no excuse. He didn't break an ankle," one NBA said of Bennett's recent weight gain.

But the 6-foot-7½ (with shoes) Canadian has as much upside as just about anyone in the draft -- and the Cavs desperately need a big wing. Bennett also produced, averaging 17.6 points and 8.7 rebounds in his first 27 games before suffering the shoulder injury.

Is Bennett the next Larry Johnson? That's the easy comparison since both played in Vegas, and there are some similarities. Both are undersized, versatile and strong and athletic.

The Cavs have Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters in the backcourt. They have Anderson Varejao and Tristan Thompson up front. There is a major need for a forward who can score. That's where Bennett comes in.

Depending on the year of the picks that's a GOOD deal. Celts are going NOWHERE soon KG, Pierce, etc... are all fading might as well get value for them and rebuild.

If it's 3 first round picks 2 in 14 and 1 in 15 I'd take that in a heart beat.

Yeah, I figured it was only a matter of time before he left Butler, but that would have been to leave for the ACC or other top destination dream job in the college ranks. A jump to the pros, and Boston, was nowhere even on my radar of possibility.

LOVE the hire!

Meh IMHO Stevens' genius is on the defensive side of the ball not exactly a priority in the NBA. I've seen ZERO indication he can create a top notch offense. :Butler: Kenpom ratings last 6 seasons:

2013: 53rd O 51st D
2012: 223rd O 28th D
2011: 50th 0 49th D
2010: 50th 0 5th D

Well he's not proven in the NBA, but it's an outside of the box hire. He's a great coach and this isn't a repeat of Petino I don't think. That's why I like it. It's been such a gloomy offseason for the Celtics, and this is definitely been some good news.

You think Rondo listens to him though JB? Or if he can deal with Rondo's temperament?

Wonder if the trade of Garnett and Pierce factored in. I'm sure it did because don't think Celtics go this route had they not been traded.

Dwight Howard landed in Los Angeles on Friday evening and contacted the Lakers, telling them he is 50-50 on his decision to sign with either them or the Houston Rockets, according to a source.
Howard's call to the Lakers came hours after a person from his camp informed the team that he would not re-sign with Los Angeles, according to the source.

"He changed his mind," the source said. "Hey, he's Dwight. What can you say."

nope not yet

LMAO Howard is VERY immature and I'm not convinced he can be "the guy" for a championship team but Houston definitely upgraded the C position. Now if Howard can agree to be the 2nd option after Harden and do allot of pick and roll for him they could be a top 5 seed in the West.

I don't blame him. Why trade for Asik and then sign Howard the year after that? Dumb as hell. I'd want out as well.

SmoothPancakes
07-07-2013, 04:50 PM
Exactly. If I remember right, he started all 82 games last year at center, now he's going to be playing second fiddle. Sure, they can find ways to get both on the court at the same time, but ultimately, throughout the entire season, he's going to be mainly backup to Howard at C. I too would want the hell out of there. Go from starting all 82 games one year to backup, for god knows how long, the next, to hell with that. Ship me off to a team that needs a new C and that I can start at.

I thought it was hilarious when Asik was signed to his deal by the Rockets, considering he was a backup in Chicago with not much of an Offensive game.

He really can't be mad. When healthy and focused Dwight is one of the best Centers in the league and can change game's with his on both ends...even WITHOUT any post game to speak of. He's also All-NBA and All-Star material.

Asik is really upset or surprised to be demoted by a player like this? When 2 seasons ago he was coming off the bench for Noah.

Nobody but Houston was signing him to a contract like that.

morsdraconis
07-08-2013, 01:34 PM
Nobody but Houston was signing him to a contract like that.

That is entirely not true. There were NUMEROUS teams that were interested in Asik and were willing to give similar contracts to him. Asik was top 5 at his position last year. To replace him with a prima donna douchebag like Dwight Howard, I'd be pissed about it as well. Asik EARNED his right to be a starting center in the league. To be denied that position because your team is desperate to grab someone that won't do anything to help them get far into the playoffs is just bullshit.

The Bulls wanted to retain him but due to the CBA language couldn't do so. Hell teams are interested in Greg Oden when speaking of interest. Quite a few teams at that. Same with Andrew Bynum. But we will see what kind of contracts they get offered. This same Houston team gave quite a bit of money to Jeremy Lin as well...

Roy Hibbert
Marc Gasol
Dwight Howard
Tyson Chandler
Joakim Noah

Are all better and were all better last year IMO just off the top of my head...You could even include

Al Hortford (who isn't a "true" Center but produced at the position nonetheless)
Brooks Lopez

And pretty sure Dwight earned his right to be a starting Center in the league for whatever team he chooses. Your personal feelings aside you have to admit he is one of the best Centers in the NBA when healthy. Hell he was actually one of the best last year when he wasn't healthy. If the position is based on character or morals, most improved player...then Asik gets the nod I guess.

I'd also be willing to say and bet an Omar Asik led team (best player on team) regardless the conference would not be led to the Finals....ever.
