on ESPN, Polian was saying that the Chargers would use T'eo as a weak inside linebacker. They would keep him covered, which eliminates questions about his ability to take on blocks.

Technically, what does the idea of "protecting" or keeping a linebacker clean
involve? In other words, how is this accomplished?

basically, it means that they wont be blitzing him....or blitzing him as often as the mike. they dont want a lineman locking him up, so that te'o can run around and make plays, whether its dropping into coverage or pursuing a runningback.

He will be playing the Will or Mo in the Under Defense (weak ILB) which means he is aligning in a 30 or outside shoulder of the guard at 5 to 7 yards deep, to understand what that means you have to look at the defensive front - to the weak side of the offense you have a Rush linebacker aligned on the outside shoulder of the tackle, a 3-tech DT aligned to the outside shoulder of the Guard and then you have a Nose Tackle that is aligned as a shade on the Center. Meaning no offensive linemen has direct access to his position and this is what's meant by protecting him.

You can protecting him by slanting your DL and asking them to take on blocks and gaps, instead of rushing up the field.
