Hell yes! These next four days are the greatest of the entire year!

I also really need to consider getting a second TV for next year's March Madness. Gonna be flipping channels like a bitch the next four days.

I use my laptop for 1 game and my t.v. for the others. Its better than the "old" days where your local CBS determined the games you could watch.

LMFAO at the Duke Kentucky game STILL making the intro to EVERY game 21 years later. It might still be in the intro in 50 years and Kentucky fans can have that knife go through their chest for decades to come.

I intentionally adjust my schedule these first two days. I normally go in around 5 or 6pm to do some work on Thursday evenings, but during the first weekend of the tournament, I instead stay up late and go in around midnight (or whenever the last game of the night is done). Get home maybe 3 or 4am, go to sleep, get up late morning on Friday and get ready for another day of games.

Meh I only had them winning this one so its not too bad. How far did you have them going?

I decided at 6am this morning, since I only did ONE bracket in total this year, only the one on ESPN in the TGT group, and with no office pool at work this year, that I would get a little crazy. I had Bucknell going to the Sweet 16, all of the 11 seeds winning, Montana over Syracuse, Davidson over Marquette and South Dakota State over Michigan. :D

There's no doubt my bracket will go to hell, but damnit, I wanted to at least get PAST the first two games of the day before my bracket went to crap.

I agree Mors but that is to be expected with a 16-1 matchup. The lower seed just isn't getting that call where if it was flipped the call would have been made before the reach in even happened.

I am still amazed that nobody has made a Bill Raftery soundboard for the internet, at least none that I have found. I could easily sit and watch games with other announcers and a handy soundboard. I would use that and have another tab open with the Gus Johnson soundboard (http://www.gusjohnsongetsbuckets.com/).

O.k. I will bite. What is up with you and storming the court? Never figured you for lover of chaotic idiocy :D

It's because Duke got the court stormed on them a couple times this season, and CLW is some vehement hater of court storming, so apparently every team in existence should storm the court after every game. Personally it's starting to get old, all the "are they going to storm the court?" posts about every fucking game.

As for FGCU-Georgetown, I had Georgetown going to the Elite Eight, but I was rooting for FGCU the entire second half. I was sitting there chanting "fuck you Georgetown" the entire second half. Dirty ass cheating sons of bitches. Some of the cheapest fucking moves and plays I've seen in recent memory in that game today. And those fuckers reffing the game didn't help much, with some of the bullshit calls they made against FGCU late in that second half.

SmoothPancakes

I'm beyond fucked. I've thus far lost one Final Four (New Mexico), two Elite Eight (New Mexico and Georgetown) and five Sweet Sixteen (New Mexico, Georgetown, Bucknell, UNLV and Kansas State).

My regions are beyond ridiculous. The East region was an absolute bloodbath. Indiana and Miami were the ONLY picks I got right in the entire goddamn region. I went 4-4 in the West, getting Gonzaga, Wichita State, Ohio State and Iowa State correct. In the South, I went 5-3, correctly picking Kansas, VCU, Minnesota, Florida and San Diego State. And the Midwest I was nearly perfect, Memphis/St. Mary's my only missed pick in the entire region.

You always pick an 11/6 and 12/5 upset in your brackets. It's now getting the point where you almost have to pick at least one 13, one 14 and one 15 to advance to the round of 32 if you're going to actually try to have a correct bracket. I honestly believe from here on out, we're going to continue seeing at least one 13 and 14 seed team win each year. 15's might not win so often, not the ridiculous 3 wins in the last two years, but they'll still be more likely to happen in the future. And I think we're going to see a 16 seed finally get over the hump and knock off a 1 seed by the end of the decade.

A school that didn't exist until 1991, a team that wasn't even eligible for the NCAA tournament until last year, and now, in their first ever trip to the tournament, as a 15 seed, they're 2-0 and are going to the Sweet Sixteen. If that doesn't qualify for storming the court, I don't know what does! :D

I didn't get to see their game today, but I watched the entire second half of the Georgetown game. My god I love their style of play. They are a very relaxed, almost care free team. They pass the ball all over the place, throw up alley-oops, a couple times a player about to get trapped literally just no-look threw the ball over his shoulder and a teammate was either there to grab the pass or quickly ran over to where the pass was going. Georgetown couldn't keep up with these kids. They were sprinting all over the place, making ungodly passes, and chucking the ball up at the rim whenever a teammate was cutting to the basket. They play fast and loose with the ball, and it works!

I fired up College Hoops 2K8 earlier this morning, wanting to hit the hardwood due to March Madness. Starting up a legacy career, low and behold, Florida Gulf Coast was one of the mid-major teams the game allowed me take over as coach at the beginning of my legacy career. So I'm running a Florida Gulf Coast legacy dynasty now. I even ran my offense in my first game against Kent State exactly like the real life team, it works on there too. Playing fast and loose with the ball, Kent State could barely keep up with my up-tempo offense. I'm gonna have a blast with that legacy dynasty.

I could have told you there wasn't much to worry about when the brackets were announced even. Creighton is over hyped because of McDermott. They're going to get a nice no lube treatment in the "new" Big East next year.

Example #1 of why I love watching Florida Gulf Coast in this tournament. They play like they're the #1 seed. Playing unafraid and running the plays they run best, not trying to change up their tempo or style of who they are just because of who they're facing.

Come on they made up those costs alone in T-Shirt sales from all the well deserved publicity. Moreover, as the article indicates the "loss" is doing something extra (paying for wives and kids of coaches) plus throwing a party.

That's great, but it doesn't help them RIGHT NOW. You're talking about a school that just started playing college athletics in '97 and, as the article quote says from their AD, their oldest alumni is 37 years old. Being a state funded school, their tuition is cheap (6k per year for instate, which, most likely, makes up quite a bit of their students) and they likely don't get much from their alumni base so it's pretty likely that they are worried about the money (their conference loaned them $25k to help with the travel expenses even).

Just like with college football, these post season happenings are KILLING colleges because of the exorbitant travel costs they're having to pay and, since they aren't getting that money back from the post season institutions and tv networks that are airing them, they end up jacking out their tuition costs to help make up for it.

No interest in watching talent or competition?

If it's not a Cinderella story or WVU, I don't give a damn. College basketball is boring as hell otherwise. It's sloppy play and boring as hell zone defenses. I tune in occasionally to see a close game in the last 2 minutes or somethin' but, for the most part, it's just mediocre basketball.

JeffHCross

JeffHCross
03-30-2013, 06:01 PM
Well you and I will NEVER agree on the current state of college basketball its causes and fixes. After watching the Jimmy V 30 for 30, I wanted respond to this. You and I first disagreed about one-and-dones. You said they've ruined college basketball. My point was that one and dones, by themselves, have not. It's better, IMO, that they have to come to school at all than not. 20% of the "50 Greatest NBA Players" list were early entries. Without the NBA age limit, we can reasonably assume that most of the players who ended up declaring as freshmen wouldn't have come to school at all. So the talent level would be worse without the rule.

It's clear, when compared to seasons like 1983 (holy shit UNC and Houston) or the early 90s (Fab Fave, Duke, UNLV, even Ohio State), that the talent level is lower. But it would be even worse without the age limit. Though, on that note, I would prefer a system like baseball's, as you suggested.

But going back to your comment that I'm quoting. You connected the two discussions, and in my eyes they are not. You called the field weak. I called it even. Perhaps you meant to only call the top seeds weak. But parity, IMO, is not weakness. The NFL has more parity today than ever before. That doesn't mean the NFL is less interesting without dominant teams. And that's how I view the tournament.

Yes, it means runs like Villanova and NC State won't happen again. That an underdog upsetting a top team won't have the same shock value. But it also means upsets are more likely. And games, across the board, are going to be closer. Because the separation between a 2nd seeded Ohio State and 11th seeded Minnesota isn't a massive talent gap. And I'm okay with that.

I don't think we really disagree on the state of the game. Or that early entrants are the cause of a lesser talent pool. But the talent has also spread (much like with scholarship limits in football), which makes the field more even. Not weaker.

Florida's done it all year. As I've said after virtually every game this year, if there was ever a team that could look like the best team in the country, and then come out a week later and look like the worst, it's Florida. They are all so wildly inconsistent. Unlike most teams when a player is having a bad game, the others step up...when a Florida player is having a bad game, they ALL have bad games. Murphy going 0-10? Young missing point blank shots repeatedly and getting out rebounded by a point guard? Kenny continuing his woeful shooting from the outside? I can't say I'm surprised. They've had a great year, but I'll be honest, I'm glad this season's over with. Watching them has been a huge frustration all year.

I hope Ware is okay and is able to have a speedy recovery. I've seen injuries like that before(in football), and it just as terrible to see every time it happens. His case was particularly odd...it's not like his leg was hit or that he even landed oddly or anything, it looked like his leg just gave out. Poor guy.

Dare I speak of the Women's Tourney. 5 seed Louisville is putting on a freaking clinic tonight. Hitting three pointers like they were layups. Stopping 6'8 Brittney Griner, held her to no field goals in the first half. Currently 16-23 69.6% shooting threes and they are hitting half of them from a couple feet beyond the line.

Looking at the biggest upset in the Women's tournament history. 16 Harvard beating 1 Stanford back in the 90's was big but Harvard was under-seeded that year and Baylor has lost one game in two years.

Just kidding CLW, as much as I dislike Duke, it sucks to get embarrassed like they did, but one has to think that the injury fired up the players that much more.

It's time the NCAA grew some balls and employed these guys full time so that they can be held accountable. The officiating isn't great in the NBA either, but at least those guys are held accountable for their ineffectiveness and they don't have different conferences calling games differently.
