North America’s longest-running sports video game franchise celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, as Electronic Arts Inc. (NASDAQ: EA) has officially announced Madden NFL 25, launching on August 27. This year’s game will feature the Madden NFL 25 name when it launches in August, plus a new fan Cover Vote will pit the NFL’s greatest legends against today’s hottest stars.

“There’s no better way to celebrate and mark the culmination of 25 years of innovation than by naming this year’s game Madden NFL 25,” said Cam Weber, General Manager of American Football for EA SPORTS. “This year’s game will push the boundaries with gameplay and feature innovations that will lay a very strong foundation for the next 25 years of this storied franchise.”

The past and the future collide in the newest Madden NFL Cover Vote across ESPN platforms and SportsNation, which will see the old school take on the new school for the historically-significant cover. A bracket of 32 all-time NFL greats will go head-to-head against one another, as will 32 modern NFL superstars, with the winners of each bracket facing off in the final round. Voting will start on Monday, March 11 on ESPN.com/MaddenVote, and fans can tune into a special edition of SportsNation at 4:00pm EST on ESPN2 for the live unveil of the brackets. Last year, fans cast 20 million votes to name Calvin Johnson, Jr. as the cover athlete of Madden NFL 13 during a special reveal show of SportsNation live from Times Square in New York City.

I realize it's PR, but that second paragraph is the funniest thing I've read in a very long time.

Barry could very well win it but he will have some potentially SERIOUS competition (depending on how far back is "old school"): Montana; Rice; Smith; Marino; Elway; Brown; etc...

LMAO Bo Knows Madden?

No. It should be Madden 14. They are calling next year's version Madden 25 because of the anniversary.

Maybe this will give them an excuse to make Madden 14 the 2014 edition?

Yeah, the football games don't need to be year jumping in their names when only the playoffs/bowls are in the next year. Baseball doesn't year jump. I can understand basketball and hockey but even then it's a little silly.

Baseball is the only one where the ENTIRE season takes place within one calendar year.

Indeed. + there may not even be a sport known as football then with the way this concussion/head injury thing is currently headed.

Like I said, I think more than anything, thhat this is the LAST year where Madden appears in the title and then next year we move to the generic NFL 15. Madden is no longer in ther media and to a lot of younger people they have never even heard of John Madden. I think EA sees this as the right time to move in another direction.

I heard they aren't even releasing Madden on the Wii U this year. I hope that's not true. I would seriously give it strong consideration with the gamepad and the bonus playcalling and hot route features IF the rest of the game was on par with the PS3. Online means nothing to me so that is not a hindrance.

With the full lineup of “Madden NFL 25” cover vote participants set to be revealed next week, EA Sports and ESPN announced today the first two legends facing off for the chance to enter the official tournament: Jerry Rice and Cris Carter.

In this year’s cover vote, each team is represented by a current superstar and an old-school legend, but due to the Houston Texans' relatively short history, Rice and Carter will battle it out this week to see who makes the cut to the final 64.

New this year, the play-in round will be conducted exclusively on Twitter, with fans able to vote for their legend of choice by tweeting SportsNation and using the hashtags #Madden25Rice or #Madden25Carter. The winner will be then announced via Twitter prior to SportsNation’s “Madden NFL 25” Cover Vote kickoff show that airs Monday, March 11 at 4 p.m. ET on ESPN2.

Once the 64-player bracket is announced, voting will commence immediately on ESPN.com/MaddenVote.
