1. Hotty and Toddy the ambiguously *** duo.
2. A Horse
3. A Black Bear
4. A Lion (Rebellion)
5. I don't even remember should of been Akbar.

So now they will vote and get three semi finalist. Then pictures and concepts will be made up of all 3. Then they vote again. Then they possibly vote again lmao....

Also.

Presonally, I would vote for horse but even that could be construed as racist as Rebel is to some people given that Lee is famous for his horse. The whole thing is ridiculous if you ask me.

#5 is Land Shark btw.

Will Ole Miss continue to be the rebels or will they change their mascot name also?

And what exactly are Hotty and Toddy?

All I have heard is that they are maybe like muppet charecters? I think they should be two hot Ole Miss chicks, maybe Miss MS and the last homecoming queen lol. Oh yeah I meant to leave the bear off for the list, I like the landshark better than it.

The administration has said we will always be the Ole Miss Rebels. Anything besides Hotty & Toddy and the landshark that gets it will be called Rebel. If a horse wins, they already have it picked... it's some kind of rare breed that knights and kings use to ride. You can look it up on Youtube, it's name is Baron.

I personally think lion, horse, or landshark in no particular order.

UNLV has a pretty similar story around the history of their mascot, yet they made it work. Location is a big part of the difference though.

Today it's Hey Reb but some at UNLV still remember the first official Rebel mascot -- Beauregard.

http://graphics.fansonly.com/schools/unlv/trads/images/unlv-trads-logoold.gif

Dressed in a gray military field jacket and Confederate cap, Beau is a fanged, winking, black and white cartoon wolf. He came to be because the new school in Southern Nevada wanted to make a little jab at the Wolf Pack mascot of Nevada, Reno.

"UNLV was rebelling against the status quo and the two schools' mascots seemed to mimic the Civil War," said former UNLV president Don Baepler, who is currently director of the Marjorie Barrick Museum of Natural History on campus. "Reno had a northern looking wolf so we wanted a Confederate wolf."

The logo lasted until the early 1970s when a group of black athletes came to Baepler, who was academic vice president at the time, and voiced its displeasure with having a mascot that had a connection with the wrong side of the Civil War.

"They said it didn't feel right playing for a school with such a mascot . . . and I agreed," said Baepler. "Southern Nevada has no real ties to the Confederacy so the change wasn't a big concern."

The student senate voted on a new mascot and the human Rebel logo was born. Initially, a Colonial-like Rebel soldier was the official logo and there was talk at one time of changing UNLV's nickname to Minutemen.

However, the current long-moustached cartoon Rebel known as Hey Reb took hold in the early 1980s and helped the school vault to the top in college apparel licensing within 10 years.

Beauregard may not be prevalent in today's UNLV athletic events but he's certainly not gone and forgotten. The original sketch of the wolf was converted into a mid-court painting for basketball games played in the old University gymnasium. Today, visitors can visit the black, white, scarlet and gray logo circle in its original position at what is now the Barrick Museum, which still uses the existing oak hardwood basketball floor to hold its exhibits.

Is this politically motivated? That's annoying. I went to 1 of only 2 high schools in NC still called the Rebels. They have tried to change it multiple times, but somehow it continues to stand the test of time. At this point it's just tradition and I'd prefer it stay what it is.

Personally, I think they are all terrible as I don't think they should have switched, but whatever.

Wow those are AWFUL! I imagine the Ole Miss alumni are not particularly happy that their Rebels are now "land sharks" "hoddy toddy" and/or "bears"

At least that's not nearly as *** as the other ones (though it's still pretty damn horrible and actually kinda looks like an objectified black person - which I think is WAY worse than just some southern looking general dude with rebel flag colors on).

Still think it's pretty bullshit that they're being made to change it.

Still think it's pretty bullshit that they're being made to change it.Made to change it ... from ... what? Colonel Reb hasn't been on the field since 2003. No one's forcing the school to pick a new one.

Yeah, but it was "frowned upon" and thus they stopped using him on the field. Basically, made to change it because it's a society faux pas because of stupid connotations that don't even exist anymore.

Well, the bear is the best of the lot. A land shark? That is really, really stupid. And Hotty Toddy? LOL. Who came up with this shit? Lame.
