Game Comments

We threw this one away. We started off rusty, with the Lakers jumping out 4-0 early, and while missing some shots, were running us up and down the court. We finally go on the board 3 1/2 minutes into the game with a free throw, and then used that to go on a run to take the lead 7-0 before the Lakers scored again. After that point, we spent most of the quarter just playing keep up. We did tie it up 25-25 with 13 seconds left when Kobe sank a extreme deep 3 at the buzzer to give the Lakers the lead.

The second quarter, the Lakers extended their lead early on. Kobe was just running all over us. Give him even the tiniest bit of space, he'll whip up and sink a 3 with ease. He was breaking the ankles of anyone trying to guard him, leading to multiple wide open shots. But we were to build up a lead and outscore the Lakers thanks to a couple of 3 point shots, as well as some well timed drives to the basket by some of our large guys to take to the locker room on top 47-45.

Start of the third quarter found us making the Lakers run, as we got a couple steals and forced a number of turnovers on the Lakers, with Ellis, Curry and Robinson all benefiting with our fast break offense, quickly sprinting down the court before the Lakers defense could regroup and getting penetration, easy layups, some dunks and drawing some fouls. We kept at it throughout the quarter and managed to extend our lead at the end of the quarter to 67-59.

Start of the fourth quarter found Kobe back on the floor and what a game changer. The Lakers quickly started chipping into our lead, thanks to Kobe and Fisher from mid-to-long range, and Gasol getting some easy jumpers in close. The last minute of the game was tense, as we held an 80-75 lead, before the Lakers went on a tear, sinking two 3 point shots and forcing a couple turnovers, giving them an 82-80 lead. We sank a 3 point shot to retake the lead, then forced a turnover with Robinson driving to the basket for the 85-82 lead. A quick 3 point shot by Kobe tied it up at 85-85 with 42 seconds left.

Ellis missed his shot attempt with 23 seconds remaining, the Lakers grabbing the rebound. On the way up the court, Curry was able to snag the ball loose from Fisher and went on a fast break, but ended up screwing up the layup, giving the Lakers the ball back with 6 seconds left and ticking. Before our defense could even react, who apparently was mentally preparing for overtime, Gasol drove towards half court and threw a baseball pass down court to Kobe, who released the uncontested jumper, the ball clearing his hands with only just 0.2 seconds left on the clock, finding nothing but net to give the Lakers the 87-85 win at the buzzer.

First, I'm gonna have to work further on the current sliders I'm using. 18 steals is too high. It was damn near impossible at times to shoot free throws, so I'm gonna have to fiddle with free throw difficulty. I think I'm gonna need to bump the user 3 pointer slider, as 28% is just abysmal. I'm gonna need to give both user and CPU a boost in the foul department. I'm also debating just making the last final jump and going from 10 minute quarters to the full 12. I'll have to see in a game or two what things are looking like, because I don't want to be sitting there with 70-80 point games when all the rest of the NBA is having 90-100-110+ point games.

Lol, yeah, that trade was rumored and being reported last night. I like Ellis though so I made sure to start the Association before 2K released a new roster update.

You definitely need to go up to 12 minutes. The amount of points is never going to hit what it should if you don't.

I concur. I was hoping it would be similar to NCAA, where I can get pretty even stuff with 9 minute quarters as opposed to 15, going with 10 for NBA instead of 12, but I agree, we only had high 60s, low 70s for points with less than 5 minutes left in the game. 10 is so close to 12, it's not going to be a big jump, just an extra 8 minutes of time needed to play the games.

So bump time to 12 minutes, drop User steals, bump up User 3 pointer a little bit, bump up fouls for both User and CPU, and drop Free Throw Difficulty. Gonna test out the changes to the sliders in a little bit against Sacramento.

Game Comments

This time we pulled a Lakers, jumping out to leads of 6-0, 14-4 and 20-8, before the Kings came storming back. The Kings easily fell into a hole early, going 0-8 in 3 point attempts before finally sinking one with less than 2 minutes left in the first quarter. Despite their lack of 3 point shooting, the Kings were able to chip away at our lead thanks to missed shots and stupid turnovers. We traded leads the last minute or two of the quarter, but Monta Ellis sank a 3 pointer with 8 seconds left to give us the 31-28 lead.

The second quarter was much of the same, as we blitzed out of the gate, extending our lead at one point to 47-32. The Kings again chipped away at some of it, because some key shooting in the final minutes kept the Kings from getting too close, and we headed to the locker room with a 65-53 lead.

Coming out of halftime, we again came out firing and extended our lead, getting up to 75-58, but midway through the quarter, our shooting went cold, allowing the Kings to close the gap. Two 3 point shots by Jimmer Fredette and Marcus Thornton, followed by some poor defense allowing Tyreke Evans and John Salmons to drive to the basket on us, closed the game even more and we found ourselves trading leads with the Kings in the final minutes. We ended up tied at 94 with 12 seconds left, before Monta Ellis sank his second 3 pointer of the game, giving us a 97-94 lead after the third quarter.

The fourth quarter started pretty much the same way the third quarter ended, with us and the Kings trading shots back and forth. We were able to build up a minor 104-100 lead, but the Kings quickly erased that, tying things up at 104, 106 and 108, before a couple of fouls and some penetration by Dominic McGuire allowed us to get back up 112-110. Trying to play catch-up with only 4 minutes left, the Kings went cold shooting, allowing us to build up our lead to 116-110 before the Kings finally got back on the board. A pair of free throws by Isaiah Thomas and a jumpshot by Tyreke Evans made it 116-114 with 2:03 left to play.

That was as close as the Kings would get, as they would fail to make another shot the rest of the game. Stephen Curry responded to Evans' jumpshot with a layup to make it 118-114 with 1:51 left, and then added a pair of free throws to extend our lead to 120-114 with 1:32 left to play. After a missed 3 point attempt by the Kings, David Lee drove in and got a layup to make it 122-114 with 1:11 left in the game, before Dorell Wright added a layup with 34 seconds left on the clock to make it 124-114.

12 minute quarters worked great, I just need to work the shot clock a little more I think, considering I had 90 points already after only 3 quarters. I've sort of built my gameplan around the speed of the Warriors, using fast breaks and quick possessions to get shots up and get to the basket for a score. Probably half of my possessions ended with more than 10-12 seconds still on the shot clock.

I still need to lower User steal more, as while we dropped down, we still had 16 steals, way too many. Team fouls looks good, I just need change some of the percentages around regarding shooting fouls, as we went to the free throw line way too many times. Kings were alright on free throws, I just need to get us (Warriors) dropped down 10-15 free throws.

Everything else looks pretty good. Assists are good, rebounds are good, blocks are good. I think User 3 pointers are good now, I can make some, especially if they're wide open uncontested shots, but a lot are going to clank out, especially if they're contested shots.

What a game this was. Much like against Sacramento, we jumped out to a quick and early lead, jumping out quick with an 11-2 run to start the game, then a couple missed shots and turnovers allowed Denver to close the gap right up to a 16-14 lead. We immediately went on an 8-0 run to make it 24-14 but Denver fought right back, resulting only a 3 point lead at the end of the first quarter. We spent the entire second half of the first quarter without Stephen Curry, who racked up a foul in the first couple minutes of the game, then a second foul just minutes later, causing him to sit out the rest of the quarter.

Start of the second quarter found us once again sprinting out of the game, going on a 13-2 run to give us a 42-28 lead, but Denver would gradually chip into the lead and we went into halftime with only an 11 point lead. We got Curry back on the floor for part of the second quarter, but he quickly drew his third foul, resulting in him seeing limited time.

The third quarter found us slugging it out heavyweight style. Denver would score on a jumper, we'd score right back. They'd hit a 3-pointer, we'd hit one right back. That would only last a couple minutes as around the 9 minute mark, we suddenly couldn't hit anything. We ended up with a total of 3 field goals during a 6 minute stretch in the third quarter, during which the Nuggets went on a 22-7 run to catch up and take the lead from us. However, we finally got settled down and got our confidence back, as we proceeded to find the bottom of the net again, and then in addition, scored 8 points in the final 50 seconds of the game, including a 3-pointer from Ellis with 0.3 seconds left in the quarter to help us overcome a 4 point deficit to take a 5 point lead into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was a back and forth battle the entire way through. We'd jump out to a 6 point lead, Denver would come right back and take a 3 point lead. We'd jump ahead by 2, they'd comeback and jump over us by 5. Down the stretch, Denver attempted a couple 3s that never had a chance, as well as a couple of untimely turnover and a pair of shot clock violations that allowed us to retake the lead and keep it for good, holding off the Nuggets at the end. Denver tried to foul us towards the end when we had a 111-109 lead, but on the inbound pass to Ellis, he quickly threw it up court to Wright, who immediately threw it to Rush just inside the arc, who sank the jumper to give us a 113-109 lead with 6.7 seconds left, with Denver not being able to foul us in time during the quick possession. The Nuggets were able to get the two points back with a foul on a layup attempt, and Lawson sank them both, but we were able to run out the final 1.7 seconds on the clock without an intentional foul by Denver.

This game also marked the first time we ran into quite a bit of foul trouble. Curry had two fouls in the first 6 minutes of the game, picked up his third in the second quarter, and ended the game with four fouls. Monta Ellis also ended the game with four fouls, Dorell Wright had three for the game, and David Lee ended up fouling out of the game with less than two minutes left to play, ending his day 0-2 and with 0 points.

As for Denver, holy crap am we lucky to win this. There were points we were getting lit up by multiple player and there was nothing we could do. During one stretch, Arron Afflalo hit back to back 3-pointers, another point in the game Danilo Gallinari hit three of his four 3-pointers in a less than two minute stretch, Al Harrington sank a couple on me. And then Kenneth Faried, he was destroying us inside. A couple easy jumpers that we could do nothing about, a couple put backs that we had no chance to defend, added 3 points from the charity stripe, and was picking up every rebound he could. Ty Lawson was the guy I was most worried about, as having played as Denver before on this game, I know exactly what Lawson can do, but we shut down Lawson pretty well for the most part, it was everyone else, Afflalo, Harrington, Gallinari, Faried, even freaking Nene (who also destroyed me in the paint), who were all lighting us up all game long.

I'm also partly to blame for how poorly Golden State did at times, because I stupidly went and fucked with our tempo. The Warriors are best when they have fast breaks, are running the opponents all over the court, and sprinting down the court for a layup or pull up shot immediately after a rebound, before the defense can even get set. There were points during the game that I slowed things down, used up the entire shot clock, and wasn't taking shots until only 2 or 3 seconds left on the shot clock. It showed this time as there were multiple points in the game where we had multiple stretches of multiple minutes with either no field goals or only 1 or 2 field goals for the entire stretch, all the while Denver sitting there making basket after basket.

Denver also played our game better than us. Against both the Lakers and Sacramento, we absolutely dominated the points in the paint (scoring 66 of my 124 points against the Kings and 48 of my 85 points against the Lakers down in the paint), but this time, it was Denver who dropped 58 points on me from inside the point, while we only had 42 points in the paint. We were also almost even on fast break points, as we had 37 and Denver had 33, whereas we outscored the Lakers by 19 and the Kings by 18 in fast break points. And it didn't help that Denver was forcing us to turn the ball over left and right and had 13 steals for the game. So Denver pretty much played our gameplan exactly, and pretty much played our gameplan better than we played it ourselves.

Well I'll be damned. I wasn't the only one getting my ass handed to me by Kenneth Faried last night.

From the Denver Nuggets Facebook page:

MANIMAL ALERT: Last night, rookie Kenneth Faried led the Nuggets to a 98-91 St. Patrick's Day victory over the Celtics at Pepsi Center.

Faried made all eight of his free throws, including two that gave Denver some breathing room in the final minute. “We don’t close that game out probably without Kenneth,” Nuggets coach George Karl said. “I was impressed with him the whole game, but I really loved him in the last three or four minutes of the game.”

The Manimal also finished 5-for-5 from the field, scored 18 points and grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds in less than 24 minutes. He became the first Nuggets player to score at least 18 points while going perfect from the field and the foul line since Danny Schayes on March 6, 1990.

I'd give it another game or two, but, as of right now, I think you're hitting too many 3-pointers too often. Could be just a blip in the radar though.

Good game though. Winning against Denver is definitely a good sign of things to come.

I'd say probably just a blip. I only hit 5-16 against the Kings and 6-21 against the Lakers. The real Warriors are averaging 8.0 made per game and 20.8 attempts per game. Despite hitting 58% of my 3-point attempts against Denver, I only hit 28% against the Lakers and 31% against the Kings, both under the Warriors season average of 38.5%. So I'd say it was probably just a blip if anything.

Plus I had Dorell Wright who came out of nowhere against Denver to hit 4 3-pointers. While not a bona fide 3-point shooter, he does have a average to decent rating for 3-point shooting, so he can hit some. Going 1-3 against the Lakers and 1-2 against the Kings, suddenly going off the chain for 4-7 against Denver (partially due to Curry riding the bench for a portion of the game with foul trouble), that also sort of skewed the 3-point results for the entire game.

But I'll keep an eye on it the next couple games to see if I need to make any changes.

As for Denver, it was a nice win, but we were lucky as hell. If we don't go on a 11-2 run to start the game, and a 13-2 run to start the third quarter, we end up losing by 10+, especially with that 6 minute period during the third quarter with only 3 field goals in the entire stretch. Those runs were huge in allowing us to be right there at the end of the game.
