2012 marks the 50th anniversary of Major League Baseball in Houston and the Astros are planning many season-long celebrations. The Astros are slated to wear throwback Colt .45 jerseys in games to be played on April 10 and 20, but the MLB has banned an iconic symbol from those jerseys, the image of the Colt .45 pistol.

So how do you guys think the 2012 MLB season is going to play out? Here's mine:

AL EAST
1. Boston
2. Toronto
3. Tampa Bay
4. New York
5. Baltimore

Last year I was wrong in rating New York so low. This year they're a year older and really didn't add anything. They got rid of prospect Jesus Montero for Michael Pineda who Rotoworld reported today is not even a lock for the rotation (though I'm sure he will be in it). There is going to eventually be a year that New York falls off the table because they've got no one coming up that wow's you, and their rotation is not great. Toronto is the big surprise here, their batting lineup is real decent, but won't hit for a great average. But you have bats like Bautista, and the young Brett Lawrie. A fairly solid 1-3 in the rotation with 4 & 5 needing to step up, and I think they will this year. Boston just has too much overall talent, and under Bobby V, they're not going to piss it down their leg this year.

JBHuskers
03-30-2012, 09:44 AM
AL Central
1. Detroit
2. Cleveland
3. Kansas City
4. Chicago
5. Minnesota

Cleveland surprisingly finished 2nd last year in the central but a distant 15 games behind Detroit. That gap is going to get closer this year as Cleveland's lineup is getting stronger, but they're still a year or two away from seriously getting close down the stretch. Kansas City has some of the best young talent BOTH in the majors and in the farm system, and ownership is possibly looking to finally commit to keeping some of that talent. They'll still be too green to work down the stretch, but don't be surprised if you see them leading the division in June or early July before gassing out. Detroit is head and shoulders above everyone here in terms of a potent batting lineup, not to mention adding Prince to the lineup who typically gets you 150+ games every year, but pitchers 1-4 can also get the job done.

JBHuskers
03-30-2012, 09:49 AM
AL West
1. Texas
2. Los Angeles
3. Seattle
4. Oakland

Seattle and Oakland, nothing to see here, move along. Texas and LA are being called by some as the new New York and Boston of the AL. This will be a crazy race this year. Both teams are so eerily similar in make up from top to bottom, bats and arms, it's crazy. It's basically 1 and 1a for these two teams. LA finished 10 back of Texas last year, that gap will close with the signings of Wilson and Pujols. Texas lost C.J. Wilson, but gain Yu Darvish who will dazzle the league to start and probably gas by August, unless Texas really is careful with his innings since he's used to pitching every 7 days instead of 5. This will be the division to watch this year, and both teams will make the playoffs.

JBHuskers
03-30-2012, 09:57 AM
NL East
1. Philadelphia
2. Atlanta
3. Washington
4. Miami
5. New York

This might be the toughest division to handicap. Philadelphia is easily the best team here, but I wouldn't be surprised if #1 and #5 in the division are only separated by 8 games. All of the other teams in the division have a sleeper vibe to them. New York has moved in the fences at Citi, which will improve the numberse of guys like Wright and Duda. Miami, new city, ugly uniforms, but a new manager to infuse some hope into the team, some great young bats that may have four guys with 30+ home runs, they have a rotation that has under achieved in their careers, but could put it all together and be dangerous. Washington has a dangerous rotation, lots of pop in the bats, and Werth should somewhat live up to his ridiculous contract with a bounce back this season. Atlanta has rebuilt itself back up from the dominating 90's runs and has the best bullpen in all of MLB easily. Lots of disappointment on the offense with Heyward, Prado, etc. If they click like they have in the past, they could give Philly a run, but Philly has been at the top for a long time for a reason. Best rotation in the majors, but they're going to win a lot of games 1-0 and 2-0 this year because Utley and Howard are such question marks. But the rotation carries them.

JBHuskers
03-30-2012, 10:03 AM
NL Central
1. Cincinnati
2. Milwaukee
3. St. Louis
4. Chicago
5. Pittsburgh
6. Houston

After taking the division crown in 2010, Cincinnati regressed, but this year they have the same core bats and arms, plus they added Mat Latos. St. Louis and Milwaukee both lost BIG bats, and didn't really replace them, on top of that their rotations, especially St. Louis, can be iffy after the top two. If Homer Bailey and Mike Leake realize their potential this year, Cincinnati could run away with it this year, Milwaukee about 8 back, St. Louis, Chicago, and Pittsburgh all in a virtual tie to where it's more 3, 3a, 3b, and Houston enjoys one more year in the NL Central cellar before joining the AL West. This will probably be like the AL Central last year. It'll be the least interesting race.

JBHuskers
03-30-2012, 10:11 AM
NL West
1. Arizona
2. Colorado
3. San Francisco
4. Los Angeles
5. San Diego

LA has new ownership that will eventually give them a shot in the arm, but after Kershaw and Billingsley, the rotation is made up of age and journeyman. Once LA either brings up another young arm or sign a free agent, it will be their downfall. The lineup is the same for the most part, and outside of Kemp and maybe Eithier, it really isn't all that exciting. San Francisco has the same type of batting lineup, nothing too flashy, but they have better overall pitching. Buster Posey should help stabilize the offense, but it won't be enough. Colorado was terrible last year, but their lineup is dangerous, and adding Cuddyer will definitely drive up run production. Their problem will be the rotation Chacin is solid, Gutherie was shaky in Baltimore, and then it's filled out with young pitchers that are a year or two away from making a huge impact. Arizona is the most solid of these five teams from top to bottom. Trevor Cahill's move to the NL should be good for him to be a #3 starter to a very solid 1/2 punch of Kennedy and Hudson. Their batting lineup was solid last year, and even improved from last year with the addition of Kubel and the power-hitting Goldschmidt will be playing every day now.

Yeah, I maybe making my first trip back to Comerica Park since 2002 or 2003 coming up in a couple months. I know a guy with season tickets to the Tigers, 18 rows behind home plate down on field level. The Tigers and Rockies play on Saturday, June 16th, so I'm am giving very serious consideration buying one of his three tickets he has for that game. Only issue will be between work that morning, the trip up to Detroit, and what time the game will be.

I wouldn't say we're 3rd as a team...more like 4th, maybe 5th because I think major league talent wise Minnesota is better. Maybe 2nd in the division if talking just offense, we will rake all season. Our pitching staff puts us down around 4, and we're staying there. Our rotation is terrible. Sanchez will not save you a game or two, he's wildly inconsistent as hell. And the rest of the rotation could be set on russian roulette and shot. Hochevar sucks. Duffy is young. Chen is old. Mendoza..WTF? This team won't be upper half until the pitching part of the youth movement comes around. Bullpen is okay but w/this shitty-ass rotation, it will be overworked.

I know were only a few games into the season, but Beltran is showing no age issues. His legs look good, Berkman is in his position, Yadi has dropped another 10 lbs to help with his knees. Carp is only out for 2 weeks and it is something he has battled with for a few years and had the same neck issue during the playoff run last year. I think you are giving Cincy and Mulwaukee too much credit. AndI gotta agree more with steelerdan picks because Pitt is doing nothing but getting better. If there pitching can hold up they are going to be a good team and a contender for the first time in years

Jesus Christ does Jonathan Broxton suck. Royals score to go up 4-3 in the 12th inning, and after striking out the first guy, an error puts a guy on first, then Broxton walks two straight batters (including one on four straight pitches) to load the bases, a ground out to second ties the game, then Broxton hits two straight batters to load the bases then bring in the winning run for Oakland. I bet the Dodgers are happy to be rid of his ass right now.

The Chicago Cubs won the bidding for Jorge Soler and agreed to terms with the 20-year-old Cuban outfielder, a source familiar with the situation told ESPNChicago.com's Bruce Levine.

Soler will come to the U.S. and take a physical before signing a contract. Terms of the deal were not released but multiple media reports say the deal is for $30 million over nine years.

The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Soler is a projected right fielder with five-tool potential, according to scouting sources.

Soler worked out for several major league teams on Wednesday, according to multiple sources. He had until July 2 to sign a contract under the previous collective bargaining agreement. Under those rules, teams can bid any amount they wish for a foreign player. After that date, the new rules will prohibit bids of more than $2.9 million.

Nights like tonight are why I love baseball. A 4-4 tie going into the tenth inning, and the Rockies light the Tigers the fuck up for 8 runs, back to back home runs for CarGo and Cuddyer, and a 12-4 lead in the bottom of the 10th. Valverde didn't really help himself when he walked the bases loaded with no outs, and then walked the bases loaded a second time with one out in the inning. Pretty much spelled doom for the Tigers.

At the All-Star Break, let's see how bad my predictions were:

AL EAST

My Prediction

Actual Standings

GB

Boston

New York

--

Toronto

Baltimore

7

Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay

7.5

New York

Boston

9.5

Baltimore

Toronto

9.5

UGLY - Basically a flip flop of two sets of teams. Boston is doing what I thought New York would do with their pitching staff. And Baltimore came out of nowhere where no one saw it coming, much like I thought Toronto was going to do.

AL CENTRAL

My Prediction

Actual Standings

GB

Detroit

Chicago

--

Cleveland

Cleveland

3

Kansas City

Detroit

3.5

Chicago

Kansas City

9.5

Minnesota

Minneosota

11

NOT TERRIBLE - Predicted that Cleveland would be in the race again, but did not predict that Peavy and Dunn would be tearing it up this season after some big disappointments last year. Kansas City still needs a year or ten apparently.

AL WEST

My Prediction

Actual Standings

GB

Texas

Texas

--

Los Angeles

Los Angeles

4

Seattle

Oakland

9

Oakland

Seattle

16.5

TOO EASY - Picking the top two and the bottom two is just too easy. If it was any different, it would be the surprise of the year.

NL EAST

My Prediction
Actual Standings
GB

Philadelphia
Washington
--

Atlanta
Atlanta
4

Washington
New York
4.5

Miami
Miami
9

New York
Philadelphia
14

SO-SO - Looking at the pitching staff, I figured Philadelphia would be able to still tread water and lead the East, but the bottom completely fell off. Victorino has had a terrible year, it took forever for Cliff Lee to get a win, Halladay is on the DL. I thought Washington's time was next year, but Gio Gonzalez's transition to the NL was seamless and he's an All-Star and Ryan Zimmerman is finally healthy. I said the fences coming in would help the New York bats, but no one say R.A. Dickey coming.

NL CENTRAL

My Prediction
Actual Standings
GB

Cincinnati
Pittsburgh
--

Milwaukee
Cincinnati
1

St. Louis
St. Louis
2.5

Chicago
Milwaukee
8

Pittsburgh
Chicago
15

Houston
Houston
15.5

STEEL - I figured Cincinnati would be near the top, but I figured Pittsburgh's rotation would do them in. McCutchen is my 1st half NL MVP.

NL WEST

My Prediction
Actual Standings
GB

Arizona
Los Angeles
--

Colorado
San Francisco
.5

San Francisco
Arizona
4

Los Angeles
San Diego
13

San Diego
Colorado
13

NOT BAD - Most figured LA was going to be in disarray with new ownership coming in, their batting is terrible, but the pitching is what has them in 1st. Colorado is a big disappointment and Jim Tracy will probably be the next manager fired. Should be a great 3-team race.

First Half Awards

AL MVP - Josh Hamilton
NL MVP - Andrew McCutchen
AL Cy Young - Jared Weaver
NL Cy Young - R.A. Dickey
AL Manager - Robin Ventura
NL Manager - Davey Johnson
