Anyone know how to get the disc out? I have the yellow overheating light. Thankfully I was playing NCAA 10 to try to get the platinum trophy, so I didn't lose NCAA 11 or Tiger 11. Looks like I'm just going to get a slim later this week.

There's various ways you can look up on youtube to temporarily fix it to get the bluray out and back up your saves to a USB. That sucks, man. This is coming from someone who's had 2 PS3s break because of a bad optical drive(it basically just stops reading discs), both less than 10 days after the warranty expired, and naturally, Sony wouldn't honor it.

I do know one thing, the last time it broke and I bought a slim, I had around 800 trophies. It takes FOREVER to sync those puppies up to a new console. I'm talking like 15 minutes. If you're over 1,000, it'll probably easily take 20 minutes to complete that task alone.

Sorry to hear that. I've recently started wondering about my slim as well. It's nearing the one year mark and it's beginning to make some weird noses. That conspiracy theory that Sony puts a time bomb to go off once the warranty expires is beginning to make me wonder. :D

Well my saves should be on the hard drive right? I bought a 320GB HD which I will just remove and put in the slim.

This system is about three years old. It was a replacement after my apartment was broken into November 2007.

I figure instead of going through Sony and paying $100+ I will just get a slim, I have my change cup I can cash in....haven't cashed that in for well over a year, so there could be $100 to $150, plus my mom works for Walmart so I can get a $30 discount on the system.

I tried to do a search on YouTube with not much luck yet...if you find a vid, post it on here please.

I don't think it works like that. I'm almost 100% sure that when you install the new hard drive on your Slim, it'll force you to format it which will erase everything. I could be wrong, but I'm almost certain that's how that is, especially going from a phat to a slim. I'd look deeper into this, as I've never tried it, but you might be out of luck there.

Try the fan thing to get the disc out first, unless you have a 60GB:

Nope... the moment you put your HDD into another console, it automatically formats it.

Guess I will just suck it up then and format the HD.

Hoping that leaving it unplugged all night will at least allow me to get my disc out. Thankfully it was NCAA 10. Really would have been pissed if it was NCAA 11 in there and I wouldn't be able to get the disc out.

JB, this is exactly why I traded my 3 year old 60 GB fatty in for a new PS3 Slim. Peace of mind. I got $175 for my old system and I'm not looking back.

If you pick up a new slim, make sure it's a 2100 series (CECH 2101A for the 120 GB and I think it's 2101B for the 250 GB). That's the new and slimmer chip design - revision 2 for the Slim. The model number will be on the bottom of the box. I'm sure Gamestop will have the new ones in but just be careful you don't buy a 2000 series which is the older model.

Yeah I'm getting the new 250GB slim from Walmart (I can get a discount of 10% since my mom works in receiving for them)....comes with two free games. If I get to pick, I can pick some newer games I can sell or return back to Walmart :D and I looked it up on eBay and I can sell the hard drive in there for $50 or so (I have my own 320 GB HD). I"m guessing Walmart would have the new model, but thanks for the heads up Rudy. Combine the things I can sell on eBay with my change cup and it won't be much more than $100 out of my pocket I guess. The only shit thing is the loss of all the data...but oh well....things could be worse.

I may do that when I get some extra cash. I've had mine for 2 years now, but I think I would prefer the peace of mind I would get with the slim versions. Plus the bigger hard drive is a plus too. But would I be able to keep the PSN games that I've bought on there?

You can re-download any game you've purchased at anytime. Just go into the Store and there's an option for Purchases or something like that.

I want to keep the phat PS3 because of the backwards compatibility, but it YLOD'd about a month ago, so I was wary about how much I'm going to be running it with the release of NCAA.

Couple things I notice with the Slim as opposed to the Fat....

Only the back gets pretty hot, right at the hard drive….that's probably typical. Inserting and ejecting discs has a more mechanical sound to them too.

I used the Data Transfer Utility to get my stuff from the phat PS3 to the Slim. It was amazing to me to listen to the Big Boy crank and crank and crank. The fan was going full speed the entire time. Now, I live near DC where it was high 90s over the weekend, so I'm sure that was a factor in the heat of the PS3. But for nearly an hour that thing was going full speed ... and the Slim was near silent.

Amazing.

No kidding, A/C smokes electric bills down here.

75 upstairs, 76 downstairs......you learn to deal with a little extra warmth and get used to it instead of paying out the nose for electricity when you live in southern climates. I used to hate it whenever our old house topped 74. LOL.

Money changes things. :)

JB, I don't have heat issues with my 360, go ahead and feel free to send the '12 disc over when it is ready next year. ;)

So I cashed in my change cup at the bank today $137+ was pretty stoked. The hot chick at the bank asked me how much I thought it was....I said like $120. What I should have said was "enough to take you out to dinner". Missed my window :(

Once I sell back the games that came with the console, the hard drive that came with it, and a couple of other things....I'll end up being worth upgrading to a slim minus erasing the hard drive.

It's not degrading at all on other people's comments. Basically, it's just an onomatopoeia. Like Sniff, Bang, etc.

Oh, my man...there are a couple of hottt ones at my bank. Maybe you can mail me a cup of change so I can try that. Ha!

Jeff, you got your PS3 sitting outside?Nah, but that day I did have my windows open most of the day, and I have a southern facing apartment, so the sun was coming in through that window (this was Saturday, the start of the heat wave). The temperature may have had nothing to do with it, it was just a theory.

I can honestly think of no other reason why attempting the Data Transfer Utility would have caused my PS3 fan to be cranking.

I'd fall over dead if my house was set on 75. 100 with the awesome 100% southeastern humidity we get is enough to kill me so if I walk in and it's 75 I'd fall over dead.

70 or below. Never above. Downstairs is like 68, 69, upstairs is like 67 at night. Our power bill isn't that much, actually. And I've got a big unit outside in the office.. keep it at 70 when I'm out there.

Pretty sure WVU doesn't hit the temps that Texas does on a regular basis, so keeping it down at 70 is easy.

Have that A/C cranking in a pretty good-sized two-story house costs MONEY.

Don't know how UGA does it at that temp with the A/C cranking.

I don't mind 105degF days, but humidity sucks, so I'm glad Central TX is generally not humid. Screw Houston.

07-08-2010, 11:23 AM
I can handle the hot temps outside (I live in LA) or inside my house but once the temp goes below 75, I FREEZE. I can not handle chilly/cold temps.

Well we have separate units for upstairs and down. The one for upstairs and new and the area is not very large. The one for downstairs is only a few years old as both went out not too long ago.

Today is another barn burner at 95+ with some scorching humidity. Can't deal with it, so I'm sitting in the 68 degrees before I walk back out to the office to do some work.
