A recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison has entered the Coaching Carousel for the 2011 college football season. Looking to eventually gain the head coaching position at his alma mater, he decides to join the struggling Tulane Green Wave as an offensive coordinator.

Note: I was using an All-American slider set, of which I'm not exactly great with just yet, and playing as weak teams makes it that much more difficult, given a shoddy D that had me losing by 20+ points in a few games my first season.

The frustrations against higher ranked teams continue for Tulane, with their running game being held in check by Ole Miss. Griffin was forced to throw 48 times, completing only 17 passes for 260 yards and a touchdown against a difficult Ole Miss defense. While the 2012 recruiting class raised team ratings, the Green Wave still do not have the firepower needed to compete against the stronger teams. However, the entire coaching staff will be focused on learning from this defeat to see if they can make this season more successful than last season's 3-win disappointment.

Another disappointing game for the Green Wave. Even after simulating the second half, Tulane's offense just could not get anything going. Not that anything was expected, going up against a great team like the Scarlet Knights.

Despite a largely better showing by the Tulane offense (3 interceptions notwithstanding), it still wasn't enough to compete with the firepower of Syracuse's offense. Tulane had 11 more total yards than Syracuse, but the running game was stagnant once again, leaving little choice but to force throws at times to gain yards, leading to the turnovers.

Week 5: BYE

Tulane's players rallied in this bye week, for one clear purpose: Get their heads back in the game, pull off some upsets and play like they ought to be able to in the coming weeks. The offensive coordinator specifically instructed his crew to make better plays, starting with the Battle of the Bell against Southern Miss.

Week 6: USM (2-1) vs. Tulane (0-3)

| 1st | 2nd | 3rd | 4th | Final
USM | 10 | 14 | 0 | 7 | 31

Rushing | 130, 4 TDs
Passing | 320, 3 TDs
3rd Down Conversions | 6-11
Red Zone - TD - FG | 7-5-0
Interceptions | 3

Behind a stellar effort from Orleans Darkwa, running only 114 yards but completing 4 clutch red zone TDs, and a 72 yard pass TD from Ryan Griffin, the Green Wave finally pulled off the upset they were hoping for. Notching their first win of the season, Tulane now looks to be on the right track. They still need three more wins to fulfill a main goal of their 2nd year offensive coordinator, and five more to become bowl eligible. But now we know they have the motivation to succeed, thanks to a perfectly timed bye week.

The Green Wave pull off another great win! Yet another Conference USA upset, as they take down Tulsa by 4 points. The entire team is on a high, with the defensive squad bending but not breaking, despite another slow start by the offense. With several games left this season, perhaps even a potential bowl bid is in sight.

Thanks to a great 13-28, 242 yard, 3 TD performance by Ryan Griffin and a strong platoon running game by Orleans Darkwa and Peyton Jason, the Green Wave notch their third straight win. Riding the wave of motivation from the bye week, they continue on their winning ways. While inconclusive last year, the hiring of their new offensive coordinator seems to be paying dividends, though the defense has also stepped up their game. As the OC comes close to fulfilling his 4-win goal, the Green Wave begin eyeing their chances at a bowl bid.

We Are Tulane!

Despite 5 interceptions by Griffin and 3 returned turnovers for touchdowns by Marshall, Tulane manages to hang on for the win in overtime. The game headed to overtime after great performances by Payten Jason, with a 92 yard TD run, and Brock Sanders and Brandon Callahan with 81 and 87 yard TD receptions respectively. The offense was clicking on all cylinders, despite Griffin's ball handling issues. Thanks to a defensive stop and missed field goal in Marshall's half of the first overtime period, all the Green Wave had to do was score. And score they did, not leaving the game to their inconsistent kicker, passing in a short yardage situation for the final score. This brings their record above .500, landing the offensive coordinator's 4th win! Is a bowl bid in the Green Wave's future? We shall see, especially with their Week 10 matchup against LSU coming up!

No big surprise, Tulane falls

The expected happened today, with the Green Wave falling to the top-25 ranked LSU Tigers. The only touchdown for Tulane was scored on a punt return, with a field goal coming at the end of the half. Surprisingly, the game was clean without a turnover from either team, but Tulane's defense just was not enough against the high-powered LSU offense. Tulane returns to .500 once again, looking at winning their next two games to become bowl eligible.

Stagnant Offense, Bowl Hopes Dwindling

The Green Wave offense stunk their way to a 33-17 loss, complete with 6 turnovers and a mere 21% 3rd down conversion rate. Things started off well when DJ Banks ran the game's first kickoff back for a 93 yard touchdown, but that was about all the points Tulane could muster. Griffin was off his game once again, throwing 4 interceptions and being sacked three times. Tulane must now look forward to better their 2010 record of only 4 wins before the end of the season.

Green Wave OC Waving White Flag?

After today's dismal loss against another top-15 team, people are beginning to wonder whether the offensive coordinator will be offered a new contract after this season. Sure, he's gotten them upset wins, but really hasn't shown a ton of effort in some of the games. We'll see, as the Green Wave are now bowl ineligible.

At the end of the season, Tulane finds itself out of the conference championship, without a bowl bid, and back at square one from before the new offensive coordinator walked onto campus. Chances weren't good for a win in the last two games, but it can't be good to put up only 6 points against 2 top teams. We'll see whether the OC returns after the offseason.

Coaching Announcement

I don't mean to burn any bridges with Tulane, but their mid-major poor-defense experience has driven me nuts. Y'know what? I'm going to go to Kansas and be their defensive coordinator for a year to prove to everyone I know what I'm doing on D. Besides, it can only be good for me, given the well-roundedness I'll need for becoming head coach, right?

Kansas' response

Uhh... We don't want you anyway. Sorry.

Gains from Recruiting: Dave Campbell, QB #2 from Springfield, PA, rated 77 overall, takes the starting spot, beneath redshirt freshmen and sophomores. Otherwise... Not a lot of good stuff in the 2013 recruiting class.

Just not enough

As the offensive coordinator tried to get a handle on Army's option offense, they blundered their way to a 17-31 loss to Ball State, an opponent they should've beaten. The team was heavily penalized, 10 penalties for 83 yards, plus turned the ball over twice. This offense is definitely a work in progress.

Beating on the Little Guy

In an effort to get a hold on Army's option offense, the offensive coordinator told his team to try their best to rip the lowly FCS team apart. And that they did. After a couple early errors, they soon got into a groove, with five runners hitting long runs of nearly 50 and up. Raymond Maples was the HB of choice, scoring 3 of the 6 rushing TDs in the game. Hopefully Army can carry this momentum ahead in the season, using this game as a learning experience.

West Point Disappointment

After the great showing against the FCS team, Army had high hopes of at least being able to stick around with BC for a while. However, it didn't take long for their first fumble (returned for a TD) to put them in a hole. After that, they simply couldn't recover.

Putting up a fight

Army didn't give up against the stronger Kansas Jayhawks this week, but they also didn't perform well enough to earn a victory. They outgained the Jayhawks, but the Jayhawk big play advantage was too much to overcome. The Army defense showed some promise, though still needs to keep a lid on the big stuff. Penalties were once again an issue, with 11 for 74 yards hampering the Black Knight offense.

Army Came to Play

Army earned a great win against Western Kentucky today, thanks to a great scoring performance from Raymond Maples. He ran for 112 yards on 9 carries, with 1 rushing TD, along with 142 yards and 2 TDs by air. The struggling Hilltoppers offense was no match for Army's defense either, scoring only once in the rout. Reaching .500 once again, Army looks forward to securing a bowl bid if they can double their win total.

Strong win, offense worrrying

Despite a lackluster offensive performance on third downs, Vanderbilt and their new offensive coordinator pull off a win in the first game of the season. Passing was key here, with 3 of their 4 touchdowns coming through the air. Vandy's defense held strong, keeping their opponent to only 14 points and securing the win.

Nope, OC still. Haven't been able to snag a DC job quite yet. I suppose having to settle for the one-star teams is all karma for trying to pick and choose what I want to play. I'm playing off a pretty good All-American slider set, but it happens to show off how poor the poor teams really are at times. Quite a struggle, and I've found myself simming after a quarter or half of failures just to move on to the next one.

Just wondering whats your coach loyalty rating after having three jobs in three years? Like the dynasty, will be following.

Coach prestige is a B, not sure about loyalty as I haven't done much with recruiting. I might focus on recruiting some more in my next dynasty. And just a note, I started the first year before I made my first attempt at a thread here, and by the time I learned how to do tables, I was into my second year. So the first season posted was year 2 of 2 with Tulane.

Also, I'm sorry this isn't as flashy as some dynasties out there, nor as well-written, but sometimes I just don't have the motivation to explain out stats or big plays. Not as good of a read, but hey. ;) Gets the job done, right?

So close, yet so far

With a minute to go, Vanderbilt was set to let the clock run down, avoid risking a turnover, and kick a game-tying field goal. Turnovers in 2 early possessions led to 14 points by Northwestern, so Vandy was intent on kicking the field goal to force overtime. Northwestern, with all three timeouts, ices the Vanderbilt kicker three times over, and he ends up missing the 23 yard FG, giving Northwestern the win and Vandy the tough first loss of the season.

IMPORTANT NOTE

Now I can access the Dynasty, but it looks like this game never registered... Disregard this one, new game coming in a second. Hopefully a win.

Two in a row

Running was key in this battle in hostile territory. The Commodores went up early thanks to a strong running game, headed by Jerron Seymour. The defense gave up a late touchdown, but the Wildcats were unable to recover the onside kick, securing Vanderbilt's second win in two games this season. Having equaled Vandy's win total from last season, the offensive coordinator is already being lauded as the best thing to happen to the school since Jay Cutler.

Holding up a win

Penalties at the most inopportune times plagued the Commodore offense. A number of drives in a row during the second half had at least one holding penalty called on Vanderbilt, one with two holding and one clipping penalty. This held back their running game just enough to have to go to the pass to make up the extra yardage, making a late run game largely ineffective. This was a tough loss, but for a team playing on the road, it was a hard fought game. Things will likely prove to be much more difficult next week, when they visit #17 LSU.

Nobody's surprised by the result of this game, not even Vanderbilt's offensive coordinator. He "lit a fire under our asses"

Faced with a 7-0 deficit after one quarter of play against a ludicrously poor team, the offensive coach pulled the starting QB and HB aside, letting them know how disappointed he was with their performance. Up to that point, they combined for 3 interceptions and 1 fumble, at least one within the red zone. Something great must've been said, because from then on, the Commodores scored 45 straight points to secure the victory. After the game, the simple response from Jerron Seymour, who split the 4 rushing TDs in half along with backup Blake Gowder, was that he "lit a fire under our asses," sending their team on a rally made of hellfire to get the win.

Some more promise

While everyone expected a loss, Vanderbilt seemed stronger than in its prior games against ranked teams. Defense held strong, and the offense managed to keep things relatively close through most of the game. They still couldn't muster a win, however. The Commodore defense has to be commended however, as things wouldn't have been as close without 4 fumble recoveries to halt the Bulldogs' offense.

Too much for Vanderbilt

Bruh, what sliders are you using?! Everybody is whoopin' your butt! In fact, I think I just beat you right now while I was reading this... 27-3 :) How are the suits feeling about this losing? Some of them are bad, like I know they didn't swallow the Utah State one easily.

My sliders are here: http://www.operationsports.com/forums/ncaa-football-sliders/494378-secelites-2012-all-american-slider-set-enjoy.html

If I can't post that link, I'll just make a chart... In fact, I might as well put in the time to make one :P I'll go back to the first page to set one up...

Slider chart posted. As of now, I think it's just my stupidity plus poor WRs and QBs in the passing game leading to more picks and drops. Seems like a lot of times hen my players catch a ball with a defender nearby ready to make a hit, it's a drop. Or defenders like to spring up to knock down a pass that most defenders wouldn't get in reality (or I'd hope not lol). I think at times simming gives me the benefit of the doubt, other times it makes the situation worse.

Hmm... It seems as though when I sim, red zone stats are abysmal for both sides (12-6-1 for them), and yet scores are so high... I think I may look for another slider set (perhaps varsity) and try a new dynasty... May come back to this one later.

Okay, so the slider's a bit better as far as letting me score. However, I was still stuck at 8 minutes per quarter, rather than 5, so I'll change that. I'm not sure what the sliders do during simming (i.e. Florida drives), but perhaps that needs a tweak somewhere.

Vandy's Third Win... Finally

Despite the snow and horrible conditions for the running game, Vandy pulled off the win (admittedly simmed after 1st half). It seemed as though the Kentucky defense was unaffected by the snow, and Vandy was simply bogged down. However, they dug deep and managed to win in hostile territory. They look forward to their final game of the season, playing against Tennessee at home.

Closing out the season with a win

Vandy pulls off its second win in a row to close out the season, beating a struggling Tennessee team in part thanks to their special teams. The punt returner brought one back for a touchdown, giving them a slightly wider margin than it ought to have been. However, this looks good for the offensive coordinator, as he looks forward to improving even more next year.

Depth Chart Battles

QB

In a 3-way battle between redshirted juniors, Ken Leonard won the starting job. Vanderbilt's offensive coordinator was looking for more mobility inside and outside the pocket, making him the clear choice over the slower Carlos Howell and Sean Parsons.

HB

No challenge here. The redshirted senior Jerron Seymour once again takes the lead as starter. If he can stay injury-free, he will continue to be successful.

FB

Charrod Clayton gets the job here, mainly for his blocking abilities.

C

Center Andrew Sapp (SO) was unable to prove himself worthy of the position over backup LGs Spencer Pulley and Kevin Riley.

RG

RS Sophomore Donnie Warren faced a similar situation. It's likely there will be a platoon OL this year, with no real specific position standouts in C and RG.

LOLB

RS Junior Albert Kimbrough, typically a backup MLB, takes over for RS Sophomore LOLB Ed Lee.

Starting off with a win

In a rematch of last year's close win, Vanderbilt is once again victorious in a tight game against Wake Forest. Thanks to an offsides penalty on a key late 4th quarter 3rd down play, the Commodores managed to get in range for a game-winning FG in the final seconds. This was a hard-fought, low-scoring game, and a great way to start off the season.

Dynasty Note

I ran the ball a lot that game, but as I'm still on 5 minute quarters, I may think about bumping things up if the next game isn't any better as far as the final score.

Picking up where they left off

Vanderbilt continues their winning ways with another victory against UTEP, their fourth in a row since last season. The improved Commodore defense shut down the Miners, allowing only 107 yards of total offense, while Jerron Seymour continues his dominance in the running game. Despite a bruised shoulder that kept him out for some time, he still managed to rack up another 100 yard rushing game. We'll see if this trend continues on the road against Marshall.

Okay... So this was a setback. Vanderbilt was snapped back to reality in this young season, especially their starting quarterback. The passing game was abysmal, with several interceptions in the game. They'll need to bounce back quickly to try to stay up in the conference.

Dynasty Note

Damn, the simming seems really unbalanced... After a half, it was 28-14, and I thought I'd give it off to the CPU for simming, just like part-way through the LSU game. I don't get it... They don't get blown out nearly as badly when I'm not simming the offensive drives, even if I am throwing picks. :(

Tough Loss, Leonard Benched

Despite a powerful running game, the on-and-off passing game of Ken Leonard has forced the offensive coordinator to bench him in favor of Carlos Howell for at least the next game after a tough loss. Four interceptions just aren't going to cut it, especially when they lead directly to scores. This loss could pretty much be placed squarely on Leonard's shoulders, and believe me, he knows it.

Georgia offense too much for Vandy

Already down by a score of 31-7 after the first half, it was clear that the Georgia offense had likely already done enough to secure their team the win. Had the Commodore defense come ready to play in the first half, things may have turned out differently. But this was really no surprise. At least things were kept to a 14 point loss.

Total Domination

Vanderbilt's defensive prowess came to play once again today, against a less difficult Virginia team. If Vandy can continue to play like this through the end of the season, they could be looking at a bowl bid.

Heartwrenching loss, defense fails Vandy again

With the lead in the 4th quarter, it looked like Vandy would come away with a win. However, two late turnovers gave Kentucky the last minute score. There just wasn't enough time for Vandy to come back, despite it being the game where Jerron Seymour set the Vanderbilt season record for rushing TDs. Very disappointing loss, ending any hope for a bowl game.

Also, the kicker missed an extra point. AN EXTRA POINT! Otherwise I wouldn't have had to try to go for 6 on the final drive. Sigh.

Vandy's Offense Stymied

The offensive coordinator is once again feeling the pressure coming up to the offseason, as his team can't muster a win... or any points, against a 2-8 team. They equaled their win total from last year, though many people were hoping for at least a bowl bid this time around. It didn't happen, so it'll be interesting to see whether he'll stick around for the final year of his contract.

Note: Game was simmed after nearly impossible offensive 1st quarter... Looks like it wasn't just me.

Worrying lapses in offense

As our new head coach takes the helm with Rice, the turnover issue continues. Despite a blowout win, the team started slowly and suffered the turnover bug once again. In order to stay afloat this season and secure the coach's first bowl bid, they'll have to reverse the turnover margin.

Close, sloppy game

Another win, another awful game. The starting QB for the Owls, Steven Johnson, threw a couple interceptions, plus poor ball control all around and poor defense. Statistically, the Owls were underdogs, but the win was much tighter than it should have been. A win's a win, though.

Great win for Rice

Finally, minus a couple turnovers, Rice seems to be finding themselves. Not a moment too soon, as they came across (and through) UCF for their first C-USA conference game. Despite losing their starting quarterback, a rather inexperienced and mediocre Marion Sears took over, at the very least allowing them to maintain their lead alongside Scott's running game. This brings them to 3 wins on the season, with hopes of matching last season's 10 wins... if not more.

Tough Loss for Owls

In a game where the run was at first hard to come by, they started off slow. The turnover bug bit them once again, a problem for all the teams the coach has led thus far. However, they nearly pulled off the comeback win at home, but were a touchdown short.

Bad Loss, Yet Expected

Houston, being the 10th ranked team in the BCS, was expected to win this one. Until the 4th quarter, it was somewhat close, however the defense faded thanks to a persistent Houston offense.

Messy game once again, but a win

Against a team they should've blown out, once again Rice has one of those magical 3-turnover games, and manage to win in OT. (Perhaps time to turn down the sliders a little to keep things down to my ability!)

Domination... Mostly

It seems Steven Johnson has broken out of his turnover funk lately, throwing only one pick to three passing TDs. While the defense held for the most part, the game still ended up closer than it ought to have been. Then again, Rice was the underdog in this game. A true victory for an up-and-down team.

In his first year as head coach, it seems he may finally be getting his bowl bid. One win away from bowl eligibility!

Scrappy, tough game

Rice is going bowling! Well, bowl eligible, anyway. This was the toughest, scrappiest battle yet, with the offense unable to crack UTEP's tough secondary to break into the end zone. However, Seth Justice came through once again with just enough in the field goal territory to get the Owls the win.

Category 5 Hurricane

The Rice defense was in shambles after being run over by the fierce Golden Hurricane offense, rarely able to make a stop when they needed to. A close game at first with hard-fought offensive yardage on the Rice side soon turned into a blowout. Now Rice must fight for the chance to play in a better bowl game, as they just lost another game to their conference rival.

Great Game for Rice

Once again, their turnovers were limited to a single INT, and they managed to keep a positive turnover ratio, but their defense also held strong, keeping Army to only 7 points. The coaches are none too happy about Rice's poor red zone offense, however. The team will have to work on that before showing up for the next game.

Okay, maybe not so much. However, Rice still managed to win, despite being outgained. That bend-but-not-break defensive style has gotten them the win more often than not. They look forward to their final game of the season, before preparing for bowl week.

Great win

This was a great win for Rice, to finish out conference play. The only mark on today's game was the safety in the first quarter, but after then, there was no competition out of UAB. Now it's time to see which bowl they'll play in.

Pulling off a bowl win

The Rice head coach finally notches his first bowl win, barely eking out a victory against a tough West Virginia team. Once again, the defense does just enough to win, and the offense has good ball control, only giving up one turnover. This was a great win to finish off the head coach's first season, and to give the seniors a great sendoff. It's yet to be seen whether the head coach will stick around, or whether Rice itself can continue its success with so many players graduating.

I think I'll be accepting Rice's extension. Knowing my likelihood of poor games in the passing game, I didn't want to risk the Air Force job, plus I like HC-ing anyway. Besides, they're not guaranteed. I could look around, but... I won't.
