ESPN today announced a collaboration with Microsoft, exclusive within the game console category, to introduce the ultimate interactive experience for sports fans. The deal will bring ESPN3.com’s live events, ESPN.com’s video-on-demand clips and sports highlights and other interactive features to the Xbox 360 console.
Beginning in November, Xbox LIVE Gold members who receive their Internet connection from an affiliated service provider will have access to more than 3,500 live, global events every year via ESPN3.com – ESPN’s 24/7 broadband sports network – including college basketball, college football and bowl games, MLB, NBA, international soccer, tennis including all four Grand Slam tournaments, golf majors and more. Fans will also be able to replay sports and events with full DVR control, pull up current scores on-demand while watching the game and easily switch between events and see what the most popular games are in the Xbox LIVE community in real time.
ESPN content and features available to all Xbox LIVE Gold members include:

Daily Highlights: Access to ESPN.com video clips and daily sports highlights streamed on-demand;
Kinect for Xbox 360 Integration: Microsoft’s new technology allows fans to control the content they watch with just their voice or wave of the hand;
Team Affiliation: Declare favorite teams and see how many other people in the Xbox LIVE community are also fans;
Social Activities: Connect to the Xbox LIVE community with in-game social activities like polls, trivia and prediction questions and more.

ESPN3.com is available in more than 50 million households nationwide – two-thirds of U.S. broadband homes – via dozens of affiliated Internet service providers including Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, Cox, Charter, Windstream, RCN, Insight, Frontier, Cavalier, Mediacom, Conway, Grande Communications and many more. It is also available at no cost to approximately 21 million U.S. college students and U.S.-based military personnel via on-campus educational networks and on-base military networks.

I heard that if your ISP does not carry ESPN3, you are out of luck. That basically this is the 360 carrying ESPN3 which hinges on your ISP. Luckily, mine carries it (surprisingly) but not a lot of people have it.

I was excited until they said your ISP has to carry it ... another reason to be pissed at Time Warner.

Don't give him ideas. ;)

I'm surprised that Windstream (my ISP) carries it. Have yet to use it as it didn't start until after the CFB & CBB seasons.

Luckily my ISP at home and at school carries it, but sadly no 360 for me.

It's cool, but how is it any different than just watching the games online through ESPN3.com?

I mean, I guess I could see with the new HD streaming that they have for ESPN3.com, it can be a bit hard on slower processors (especially full screen on larger resolutions) so I guess going with the 360 instead would make it where it's streamed in HD without it being tough on the processor.

I'll definitely be checking it out when it hits.

Finally giving ESPN3 a try on the 360 since I have the new Dashboard (maybe it's public now). Works pretty well....hasn't stopped to buffer yet and that's sometimes an issue I have with streaming video.

Don't think it's public on 360, but we just got ESPN3 access for Time Warner yesterday....

Sort of an odd "exclusive". I.e. I'm not sure what ESPN gets out of just going on the 360 unless Microsoft paid them for the exclusive rights.

I've never tried it but what would prevent someone with a PS3 (with an ISP that allows espn3) to just use the PSN browser to view espn 3 content?

The PSN Browser isn't compatible with the flash that ESPN3 uses.

LOL sounds like Sony needs a new firmware update to mess with MS a little then.

Plus I'm sure an actual 360 app is going to look better than a stream on the console browser. Curious to see the quality of it since it's basically HD. I'm assuming it will be the same as MLB.TV, while blurry was definitely worth having.

Yes! I have been looking constantly online for the last month and a half for an answer to when we would get access. Thank you! I can finally watch ESPN3 on my own ESPN account.

Update rolling out today. My 360 is downloading the update right now, almost done. According to Major Nelson, this is a doozy of an update.

Xbox 360 Dashboard update is now available

I am happy to announce that the latest dashboard update has now been officially released and is in process of being rolled out across the LIVE service. For many of you, the next time you sign in to Xbox LIVE, you will be prompted to receive the update. A couple of things to keep in mind over the next few hours as the update is deployed:

You’ll be prompted to accept the update when you sign into Xbox Live sometime in the next few hours.
Regardless of what you have heard, it's not geographically based. No one area of the world will get it before another.
If you keep signing out and then back in again, this will NOT force the update…it will only anger people on your friends list who will keep getting a notification. every. time. you sign. in.
Be patient, everyone will eventually receive the update

Here are a few of the features that we are including in this update:

ESPN on Xbox LIVE*

3,500 Sporting Events A Year – Access more than 3,500 live and on-demand global sporting events from ESPN3.com a year, including college basketball, college football and college bowl games, MLB, NBA, international soccer and more.

Out of Market Games – Catch your favorite college team games. Check out the huge catalog of out of market games and enjoy them on the big screen.

The Best Ways to Watch – Enjoy HD programming, DVR controls, plus access to hundreds of clips from ESPN3.com, refreshed daily.

Games at a Glance – Keep up on real-time score information using ESPN.com’s score feed without leaving the game you’re watching. View scores for leagues and games currently in the ESPN.com feed and select “Watch Live” or “Watch Replay” to jump straight into that game.

Predict the Winner – Pick what team you think will win. While watching selected games in college football, college basketball, MLB, and NBA, you will be prompted to vote for your team of choice. You’ll also see the percentage of votes among the Xbox LIVE viewing community.

Voice Chat – Voice chat with up to seven other friends while watching the big game.

My Sports – To customize your ESPN on Xbox LIVE experience, click on the “Events, Highlights and More” slot on the homepage and browse by sport to pick a specific league that you want to follow for the season. The league that you select will now automatically display in your My Sports Channel.

Zune Music*

Zune Pass – Zune Pass is a monthly subscription service that gives you unlimited, on demand streaming of millions of songs at launch from all the major music labels and thousands of independent labels.

Enhanced search – Search the broad library to find your favorite artists, albums, songs and playlists.

Social – Connect with like-minded fans on the Zune online community and get new music recommendations. Zune Social also lets you see friend’s Avatars and listen to their recently played songs or check out their favorite artists.

Smart DJ – Instantly create customized playlists by selecting an artist and have Smart DJ find songs that complement your selection.

Netflix* Search – Experience a streamlined search function making it much easier to find the movies and TV shows you want to watch.

Improved voice chat quality – The audio codec is updated to improve Xbox LIVE Party audio quality. So grab your friends and jump into a multiplayer game or catch a big game with friends via ESPN3.

Improved Gamertag creation – Choosing a new Gamertag? If the Gamertag you’re looking for is already taken, your Avatar will spin a wheel and we will provide five other Gamertag suggestions at a time for you to choose from.

Streamlined in-dashboard virtual keyboard – We’ve taken the existing QWERTY keyboard in-dash and made it easier to use for scenarios that involve repeated text entry, when signing up for LIVE within the dashboard for example.

Improved Xbox LIVE Marketplace UI and browse experience – The Game Marketplace has been re-organized to provide streamlined access to the gaming and video content you want, reducing the number of steps to get to a download.

Easier to get on a wireless network – Trying to connect to a wireless network? Now you can see a list of all the wireless networks within range when you go into network settings. From there, you can select a new network or further configure the network you’re connected to.

Ability to sign-out other controllers in the sign-in UI – We’re adding the ability to sign-out profiles on other controllers in the sign-in UI within the Guide. This is especially useful when playing games like Rock Band.

New browse experience for 100% completed games – You spent a lot of time and effort earning those Achievements, so we’re giving you a new and better way to browse all of them.

Updated Family Settings – Xbox 360 continues to lead the industry in efforts to create tools that help parents and caregivers choose the right play and viewing settings for their families. We are enhancing the core Family Settings tools for all Xbox LIVE members:

Family Programming – When turned on, Family Programming disables display of all mature content on the dashboard and can be turned on or off with a protected password for individual members (per account). It also highlights all family-friendly entertainment.

Intelligent Default Settings – Your Xbox automatically customizes privacy and activity settings for each member, based on age (child, teen and adult). These settings can later be individually customized.

Title Exceptions – Allow your family members to play specific games above the console’s designated ESRB/PEGI (etc.) rating as you deem appropriate.

* Xbox LIVE Gold account required to access these features. Not all features available in all Xbox LIVE Regions.

JB, you shouldn't have to worry about picture quality for ESPN. I'm watching Sportscenter right now on it and hooked up to my router through the wireless adapter, this picture quality is damn good!

Sweet. MLB.TV is kinda blurry on camera movement, but it's not a deal breaker. It was still worth $99 for me to get every game of the MLB season and go back and replay games right there on my PS3. It was fun re-watching the no-hitters.

How did this guy (major nelson) get the job that he has? I Personally think he is pretty lame and honestly too old to be the spokesman for video games. Actually its quite funny seeing he trying to get excited about video games. I hope its just a job for him.

His little skits are just terrible!!!!!!

Edit: Now that I think about it even the people on g4TV are terrible also.

I don't know if anyone else is on to this, but I watch hockey games practically every night on a p2p site. It's atdhe.net and about 90% of the time I'm able to watch on my ps3 full screen. The picture quality varies and is generally poor, but free out-of-market games on my TV is still free out-of-market games on my TV.

Obviously, the site has football, baseball, basketball etc too.

Just a heads up for guys wanting to see out-of-market games.
