Darren Rovell of MSNBC just posted the following pictures of the retro uniforms that will be worn by Notre Dame and Michigan for their September 10th, 2011 game at Michigan Stadium.

Gutsy call putting numbers on the sides of those helmet designs.

I really like these unis.

I'm in that camp too; I just wish that the Michigan uniform was more restrained in terms of the shoulder striping. Feels too busy compared to the Notre Dame uniform, which gets the shoulder stripes just about right.

Really like the clover logo on the Notre Dame helmets; gutsy call to put numbers on the Michigan helmet but the stripes eliminate space for "TV numbers" on the sides of the uniform so they kinda had to do that.

Okay, nevermind about the Michigan helmet numbers being "gutsy"; apparently that's just how they used to be back in the day:

Same for the Notre Dame helmet logo:

I didn't see either of them in any of the Community Event builds--and I used Michigan quite a bit--and both schools were really hardcore about keeping these under wraps until the official announcement tonight. It's pretty late in the cycle, but I never rule anything out anymore. Just don't bet your life savings on seeing them in the game.

Those are sexy. I like them better than their usual jersey's I'd make a few tweaks and make them my full time jerseys. The M on the front big like that is just sick.

I like them except for what I can best describe as the sawtooth design in the Michigan M and numbers.

Oh, and I despise the colors as general principle.

And the block M.

But other than that, I like them.

On a serious side note ... anybody find it funny that those are Adidas jerseys and yet the photoshoot looks distinctly Pro Combat-like?

1891 is the closest to it..the Mich helmet actually happened in the 50s but the jersey is just embelished crap..more revisionist history in my opinion

here's some more history

Did :Michigan: learn nothing from when the NFL went to throwbacks in 1994 and some of the teams trotted out pure junk? Anyone remember Green Bay? Philly? Chicago? The number on the helmet is nice and I would have no problem w/ them going to that full time... but those jerseys... if anything can make Denard Robinson look slow... those ugly things will do the trick.

As far as :Notre_Dame: goes... Very classy, very nice.

:Notre_Dame: +100 :Michigan: -100

Like both of them, can't pick. I'm going with Michigan strictly because they have stitching on the numbers like they did back in the day. Seems like a minor uniform nuance with which to make a decision, but I will remind you I am an Oregon fan and thus have a life experience degree in fashion design.

I dont understand what Michigan is doing?

the helmet style existed but absolutely nothing about the jersey is from their history except maybe the weak attempt at the sleeves

I don't understand the hate on these Michigan unis. I like them....A LOT!

EDIT: I do seriously wish that they had kept the M stripes to just 3 across the shoulder, and not continued them onto the sleeve, that would've been REALLY sick!

because ND actually is using their history. Mich just threw some idea together for pseudo history. But, again, at least they got the helmet right

I guess, but most throwbacks these days are pseudo history, with some sort of new-aged rendering. So to me I guess it's not a big deal as long as there is something in the uni that actually holds the quality of "throwback". As you said, it's the helmet. Actually I like that helmet more than without the numbers.... :D

The striped sleeves were part of UM history, as are the helmets with numbers.

The big block M with the smaller number is not.

:Ddude, look a page or 2 back, I already posted every example of Mich uniform history:D I'm aware of the 1890s uni... they should have just put a small M over the left chest like the 1890s uni and maybe put the number on the right since officials need to be appeased with that crap ....

I already saw your post. Just pointing it out again since copying a previous uniform isn't always the goal. Probably why they are called Legacy jerseys, not throwbacks.

wheres the legacy? its a fictional creation that has nothing to do with the past...which I dont really have a problem with but I think if your calling it a legacy, you try a tad harder then just putting a big M in front haha. and its too bad sleeves are tight now, it kind of takes away from jersey creativity

that being said, while looking at stuff, I saw an ooold Florida State team picture and on the front of every jersey/shirt/sweater was a huge F haha

I look at it this way...

A throwback would imply that the uniform--as designed--exactly matched a uniform that had been worn by the team in the past. As you've stated multiple times here, this is not the case with the Michigan uniform for this game.

A legacy uniform, however, could draw from multiple designs in the history of Michigan football to have the overall legacy of the program reflected in a single uniform design. I believe that this is what the intention was for the design. I'll try to pull up a quote from the uniform reveal to illustrate this.

Here's a quote taken from a USA Today article (http://content.usatoday.com/communities/campusrivalry/post/2011/06/michigan-throwback-uniforms-notre-dame/1) on the uniform unveiling:

The Wolverines uniforms merge elements of jerseys from throughout the school's history. Player numbers also appear on Michigan's famous winged helmet for the first time since the late 1960s.

"The compilation of elements from different eras of Michigan football makes this a unique and special uniform," Michigan athletic director Dave Brandon said. "Our players have seen other schools and professional teams wear throwback uniforms and will now have an opportunity to showcase our tradition in a melding of styles. This will be a special event for our football program, the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor and all of our fans."

:Dwell you can look at how you want but heres the actual definition of Legacy:D

we need to come up with a fancy name to pass off our sorry attempt at a design since we are so confused by the fact that Mich never really had a design other than the helmet for 80 years and more:D..but like I said, I kind of like the fan replica with the longer sleeves haha

I love the fact that they are using the retro Adidas logo as well on the uniforms. That really sells the while concept of it being a throwback.
