While Games For Windows LIVE never quite worked as well as Microsoft hoped it would, the idea of having integration of XBL Gamertags, Marketplace and Friends Lists across into PC games was one that many who game on both a 360 and Windows PC really liked. Unfortunately the main advantage, that of cross platform play between Xbox and PC gamers was never fully realized. Perhaps that will change with the next iteration of the Windows platform.

Mike Delman, Global Marketing VP of Microsoft’s Interactive Entertainment Business Group told the Seattle Times that; “Live will be built into the PC. It will be the service where you get your entertainment.”

Mike Delman is apparently talking about Windows 8 and how XBL is going to be built directly into the platform. This will be fairly significant since Windows 8 is being designed with tablet PC devices in mind. Much like with their line of Windows Phone 7 devices, XBL integration into the devices right from the very start will mean great opportunities for gamers as well as ease of use for the huge number of developers who are already very comfortable with development on Microsoft’s platforms.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out, or is it simply too late for Microsoft to be making moves into the arena?
