Decided to get this for the bedroom (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00426C56U/ref=s9_simh_gw_p23_d0_i1?pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_s=center-2&pf_rd_r=0ZGTM1MPEV88CJ9XNT6M&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=470938631&pf_rd_i=507846) to stream MLB.TV and Netflix among other things that they have.

I've been looking into getting something similar to these for Netflix, so I could look into cutting down my cable bill. I've been shopping around for a blu-ray player that streams Netflix. I don't use my PS3 for anything but gaming. Just may pick up one of these.

Yeah once I get it, I'll let you know what I think of it. I have a blu ray player in the bedroom, but it doesn't have wi-fi, plus I got it on clearance. So to get a blu ray player with wifi would just be a wash with what I got now and the Roku combined.

My mom used a roku box for a while ~2 years back and she loved it. It worked really well and even the shitty internet they have (3down/.7up) seemed to not be an issue with it.

We have a Roku box but we don't use it anymore. With a PS3 in the living room and bedroom and a Wii in the guest bedroom, every tv has Netflix access.

Just got an Apple TV and it's pretty cool. Netflix streams really well, we actually rented a movie over the weekend and that went smooth. You can do MLB.tv and NBA on it. And for those shady people out there that have downloaded movies the Jailbreak was really simple to do.

Wonder if Roku has NBA broadband....that would be sweet if so....then I can take it out into the living room when a Celtics game is on that's not on national TV.

Not sure. That is the cool thing about the ATv though, it's freaking tiny. I've moved it around a couple of times already depending on where I am in the house. Also with the Jailbreak there's an Airplay app that I can stream my movie library anywhere.

Depends on what you are looking for. If you're looking for strictly music and video and you have a lot of it then go with a regular iPod, they go up to 160gb. If you want some casual music and a lot of other fun stuff get the touch. The touch truly is the iPhone without the phone. However there are a couple of apps that let you make calls over wifi, I have a Google Voice number and u can make calls with an app called Talkatone and text with the Google Voice app.

Just before I went to bed, I set up my Roku player, and I LOVE IT! Netflix was having an outage so I didn't get that activated, but did this morning and it works flawless just like on PS3 and 360. Last night I set up MLB.TV and the quality and speed of loading up a game are great. There is a Roku Newscaster Channel where you can listen to ESPN podcasts, so I turned on a Fantasy Baseball podcast and fell asleep to that :D

There is a channel store where you can add Pandora and there is one called Crackle which is completely free and has some movies in there. Hulu Plus is on there as well for those who have that. Same goes for Amazon Video you can stream from your account there. Well worth the purchase if you want those things in a room where you don't have a PS3 or 360. It's such a tiny box and was very fast to set up with my wireless connection.

I was thinking of one of the Roku boxes for our bedroom TV since right now we only stream Netflix through the 360 downstairs and sometimes through a Sony TV in the guest room, but the wife didn't think she'd use it enough up there to spend the money. I kinda disagree these days since we stream as much Netflix as using the discs anymore.

JBHuskers
06-14-2011, 01:26 PM
Yeah I quit using the disc and went stream only starting this month....plus with me having the MLB.TV that gives me another room to watch games from that either in bed watching a late west coast game, or while doing laundry or something. On top of that it takes up no space whatsoever. The box is maybe six inches square and two inches thick?

AustinWolv
06-14-2011, 01:33 PM
Going to try to find a deal on one I think. Just show up with it and she won't fight it if she sees how useful it could be, especially when she wants to watch some show if TV sucks or we can stream stuff like Dexter or True Blood in the bedroom (she prefers that to the couch for whatever reason). Also, the kiddo can watch her kid movies on it and not tie up my 360. LOL.

JBHuskers

Being portable helps too you can switch it out from one room to the other really easy.

A DVR or SlingBox type feature built into a Google TV just might get me to buy one.

Google buys up SageTV to bolster Google TV with useful features

SageTV, a company that makes products with streaming and media center-type services, announced on Saturday that it had been acquired by Google. Google is speculated to want SageTV for its DVR and Slingbox-like capabilities for possible integration with Google TV and Google's cloud services.

SageTV's products have filled a niche as just-works media extenders for a couple of years now, allowing customers to serve media over LAN, stream YouTube videos, and stream from PVRs running SageTV's DVR software to a home theater setup. In our own guide, we called it a device that could turn "any networked machine with UPnP support into an HDMI-enabled HTPC."

Now that Google has scooped it up, there are a number of SageTV's services Google might be after. Rakesh Agrawal, SnapStream Media founder, speculates that Google bought SageTV in order to add native DVR capabilities to Google TV. But Google TV can already integrate with and automate existing DVRs, leading GigaOM to counter that making DVRs that run Google TV software would be redundant.

Instead, Google is more likely to focus on the Slingbox-like abilities of the SageTV platform, which can "place-shift" both live and stored video content from a DVR or PC to either a local or remote playback location. With that type of software installed on PCs and Google TVs, customers could watch video stored on their computers or DVRs connected to a Google TV on any other Google TV-enabled device in the world. SageTV is also friendly with a bevy of video file formats commonly used online (especially on bittorrent services), so a service like this rolled up with Google's burgeoning media cloud could have a major edge among media geeks vs. similar setups, such as iTunes integration with Apple TV boxes.

I know this will just give Google even more information about me as they will be able to see everything I look at, but I'll probably get a pair of these

http://www.csmonitor.com/Innovation/Horizons/2012/0223/Google-glasses-due-this-year-turn-seeing-into-searching

http://www.csmonitor.com/var/ezflow_site/storage/images/media/content/2012/0320-google/11829224-1-eng-US/0320-Google_full_380.jpg

Google is prepping a pair of augmented reality glasses, which would allow users to receive, via a data connection, real-time information on their surroundings. According to a new report in The New York Times, the glasses – or Google goggles, if you like – will hit shelves by the end of the year, and retail for somewhere between $250 and $600. (The Times describes the glasses as being priced like an unsubsidized smartphone.)

Unsurprisingly, Google has declined comment on the rumor, but the news does sync with a December post from Seth Weintraub, a blogger with 9 to 5 Google. The Google glasses, Weintraub wrote at the time, would "tie into Google’s location services. A user can walk around with information popping up and into display – Terminator-style – based on preferences, location and Google’s information."

Weintraub says the goggles will resemble the Oakley Thumps, a pair of sunglasses equipped with an MP3 player. All of which, of course, sounds both immensely cool and terribly dorky. (Not to mention potentially fatal. You think people have trouble concentrating on walking and smartphone using now? Try giving them a pair of glasses with a camera and a heads-up display and a bunch of streaming imagery.)

Of course, as Damon Brown notes in a smart piece over at PC World, Google has plenty of reasons to want to shill its own augmented-reality glasses.

"Glasses are actually the final piece to Google’s mission: To know what a user doing every single moment of the day," Brown writes. "The search giant already is unifying some 60-odd products into one log-in for continuous online tracking. And, as we reported last week, it’s enticing you to use Google to come up with those web passwords."

Sound a little paranoid? Wi-Fi and 3G equipped goggles would allow Google access not just to your location, but to the advertisements that catch your attention, the identity of your friends and family, the whole of the world as you see it. And that's scary stuff.

Agree with G on the Hauppauge. However if you don't want to pay the price for it, this one isn't bad http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/game-capture/default.html?rTrack=m_pro_gaming. It's $99.99 now but they often run specials and it comes with editing software, I got mine for $30 last year. It does the job. Unfortunately I can't comment on the editing software that comes with it as my Netbook doesn't have the requirements to run it so I have to use Windows Movie Maker(which sucks)

Like G said the Hauppauge unit is nice.

I went with this one though because I got a pretty good deal on it and it does the same thing http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815100052

Shame it is getting bad reviews due to people being complete numbskulls like "it doesn't record HDMI".

its already been that way with cell phones anyway. People are just rude and preoccupied and no attention span and are too stupid to realize how rude it is. Interaction is just a communication device word now because people are losing the ability to actually communicate anyway.

As I mentioned in the PS4 or XBOX1 thread(not sure which), I plan on upgrading to a larger LED TV in the near future. I am also looking at getting a surround sound/home theater system to go with it to drown out the excess noise that filters into my man cave. Does anyone have any suggestions? I have about $300 set aside at the moment, and probably could get another $100 or so if I tried so looking for suggestions in that price range.

Sorry if my post did not make sense, but I am looking for suggestions about Surround Sound/Home Theater systems. I have an idea of what TV I want already. Just trying to find out what type of Home theater systems everyone has and what they think of them. Thanks anyway though man.

Same site has reviews for speakers and receivers.

Ryby if you can, get the Denon and Boston Acoustic HTIB from Best Buy if you are looking to buy a system in store. I think it's $599. It has good sound quality and options compared to the other HTIB's. I would stray away from any that include a bd/dvd player because they are seriously lacking in inputs, are made to prevent you from upgrading in the future, and don't have the same depth of sound. With the Denon system, you could always upgrade your speakers or receiver individually over time. That's what I did. I bought a Sony HT-SS2300 HTIB back when they still made them w/o the BD drive in the receiver. Over this past year, thanks to my work discount, I have switched out the front speakers for a pair of Definitive Technologies Pro Monitor 800's, and switched the center out with a Bowers and Wilkins M-1. They sound amazing for movies, music, and gaming. Just go into a Best Buy and have them demo the systems for you, or they should already be set up so you can play around with them yourself.

I would recommend you buy your sound system first before upgrading your tv because it really helps with the immersion. Plus the new tvs now are shipping with small crappy speakers where you can't hear anything w/o turning the volume up almost all the way.

Thanks a bunch Escobar. My sister in law let me use her cheap RCA ones that she was not using for the time being. I may have to hold off on buying a new one now that the PS4 info has been announced and I pre-ordered it. I may look at getting one again next year. Again, thanks for the info.

Hey fellas. Can a Vizio SoundBar be combined with an existing system to replace the front speakers (left, center, right)?

Actually I might go with the soundbar in the bedroom where there are no speakers except from the TV.

For the living room, I might just replace the center speaker. Not sure to go cheaper with the TL1 or a little more with the TL2

Yes. Talked through this with an audio guy, as I have kind of a weird-shaped room that isn't ideal for surround. But I ended up buying and using a pretty nice 7.1 surroundbar to cover the fronts and sides (and I'm blanking on whose it is right now) with ceiling-mounted flush rears. Separate sub of course.
The soundbar actually can also throw the side speakers for 7.1 if the room was shaped right.......which it technically isn't due to it being open on one side.

I don't really notice any weirdness though.

In retrospect, I probably could have gotten some better performance from having front R, L, and center channels as separate components, but the soundbar looks better (wife was rather determined on that aspect), plus where I would have had to put the separate components wouldn't have been spaced optimally.

Just my two cents.

My vote is to go for the nicest speakers you can spend money on. The difference between a shit center channel and a nice one is quite noticeable. Less so with rears IMO. The center channel and two fronts and the sub, and my memory might be vague as I haven't looked into this stuff in over 3 years, are the ones to spend money on as they do a large majority of the work. The sides and rears, not so much.

Cool thanks. I'm leaning towards just upgrading the center for now then. (I've already upgraded the receiver and sub in the past....the five speakers are still stock Pioneers. Do I need to spend more on the TL2 here or just get the cheaper TL1? Good reviews on both as far as center speakers go....

Hmm, not sure you should take advice from me on this stuff, don't want to do you a disservice.

But I do know the center channel is the most important speaker, given that it does all the dialogue and much of the action......the two fronts provide movement perception, soundtracks, sound effects, and of course stereo effects, etc.......so you want the one with a wider frequency range (the TL2). I bet the TL1 sounds tinny and lacks depth compared to the TL2.

Oh no worries. Didn't make any big purchases with my incoming tax money with getting a PS4, but I'll probably make the purchase to the TL2 unless someone thinks of a better brand that isn't too much more expensive than that.

We have a Logitech Harmony 650 remote for those of you with multiple systems and remotes.
They have been out many years and you may have heard of them. If not it's a multiple remote that you program with the computer with in minutes.
It will control up to 5 devices and knows every button that is on your original remote so nothing will be missing.
It also lights up so at night you can see what buttons to push.
All you need to program it is the brand and model number of your device. They clam to have every device in their inventory, They did have all of mine.
You can program other things also Xbox, fans, garage door. exc...
I picked mine up at Radio Shack I'd guess most electronic places would sell them.

Got this hooked up last night - http://www.amazon.com/Polk-Audio-Speaker-Center-Channel/dp/B0043M667M/ref=sr_1_9?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1390898128&sr=1-9&keywords=center+speaker

Definitely noticed right away how the dialog pops with a better center speaker. Love it. I was a little worried because I've never dealt with banana plugs before, but I got it to work right away.
