Unfortunately, this probably only motivates his "followers" more in the short-term.

Obama and Co. have been storing his body for a year or two waiting for their respectability to go to it's lowest point and then release it to rally support.

I'm surprised that they are letting it known that "the US has his body." Granted, that likely means in a pine box on a military installation in the middle east, but that seems like something that would piss off any looneys of the same mindset. Personally, I'd be keeping that on the down low. I wonder what they will do with it.

I'm surprised that they are letting it known that "the US has his body."There's two reasons. One, our media is stupid when it comes to hiding details for the sake of national security. Two, we're wanting to assure people that we actually know he's dead, and it's not just rumor.

Yeah, you can guarantee shit is going to get crazy over there. al Qaeda has already announced and had been expected to start their yearly "spring offensive" this week. Now shit'll really get ramped up by them with this news of their revered leader being not only just killed, but his body being taken into possession of by "the infidels", instead of them being able to take his body and give it's a martyr's funeral and burial.

The Arab world is waking up to the news that UBL is dead....with images of Americans celebrating in the streets. I'm glad he's dead, but I find the public celebrations in the streets somewhat troubling. Their next 'leader' has a new basis for American hate, as if the death of UBL wasn't enough. FDNY celebrating - makes sense. College kids (who were 8-12 at the time of 9/11) - not as much.

cdj

Seeing that they believe Bin Laden's oldest son may have been killed as well. As the US and allies hunted him for years, I remember reading that they believed he would be so well guarded that it would take a huge firefight to kill him (as it sounds like) but that his guards were told to kill UBL so the US could not. Apparently, that either was not correct or things didn't play out as planned. Their guard was probably slightly down after 10 years on the run.

JBHuskers
05-01-2011, 11:48 PM
They said the firefight was 40 mins. Bin Laden's son, two couriers, and a woman who was used as a human shield were killed.

The State Department on Sunday warned Americans worldwide of "enhanced potential for anti-American violence" following the killing of al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

"Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, U.S. citizens in areas where events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations," the State Department said in a statement.

Obviously a great accomplishment to bring the mastermind of 9/11 (and other attacks on the U.S.) to justice. Thank you to the military members involved and yes even the White House for having the guts to move in for the kill when the opportunity came.

However, there is zero doubt in my mind that the terrorists and other Muslim extremist will use the footage/photos of U.S. celebrating in the streets as propaganda to bring in new members. Also, I would expect Al Qaeda to try to strike back at the U.S. with another massive attack on U.S. soil a.s.a.p.

A great accomplishment but the War on Terror must and will continue. I hope and pray that our intelligence community can snuff out and stop the retaliation that will likely be coming our way in the near future.

EDIT: Interestingly, on Morning Joe this morning they reported that "Enhanced Interrogation Techniques" used by the Bush administration got the ball rolling so to speak. Apparently, after the EIT one of the detainees gave the nick/code name for one of Osama's couriers. It then took years to track down who this person was but eventually they tracked him down which led to the location of Osama and ultimately his demise. I haven't read this anywhere else but if true I would hope this would put to rest the idiocy of the argument used against Bush as some sort of animal/criminal for using EIT.

I'm like CDJ, I'm glad New York was celebrating and stuff but to see the pics of State College, PA (Penn State University) last night for some reason just didn't sit well with me. Not hardly.... Hitler tried to exterminate an entire culture of people (nevermind the gypsies, homosexuals, and other people that they killed in the process) and succeeded in killing several million people in the process.

Osama Bin Laden helped plan an attack that killed 2,000 some people when it was all over. Hardly Hitler-esque.

he's had his hand in more than those 2000 and in other countries besides. The total number is unimportant
and the world was in danger because of him regardless of it not necessarily being documented as a world war.
its not the 1940s anymore, world war can be more concentrated and defined. It doesnt have to be 30,000 marching across a countryside. Laden was definitely at war with the world in his mind.

Meh, this is overblown. If any non-athlete/celebrity says this, we just write it off as his opinion. I mean really all he said is he questions whether the public (inluding himself) knows the truth. Millions of people think that way, big deal.

ha ha, ..I'm suprised they did something in Kentucky and let the media know for that matter. They should have just had the soldiers come to the white house with it being no ones business to be acknowledged. Who needs intel when you have dumb American media telling you everything ?

CORUSCANT — Obi-Wan Kenobi, the mastermind of some of the most devastating attacks on the Galactic Empire and the most hunted man in the galaxy, was killed in a firefight with Imperial forces near Alderaan, Darth Vader announced on Sunday.

In a late-night appearance in the East Room of the Imperial Palace, Lord Vader declared that “justice has been done” as he disclosed that agents of the Imperial Army and stormtroopers of the 501st Legion had finally cornered Kenobi, one of the leaders of the Jedi rebellion, who had eluded the Empire for nearly two decades. Imperial officials said Kenobi resisted and was cut down by Lord Vader's own lightsaber. He was later dumped out of an airlock.

The news touched off an extraordinary outpouring of emotion as crowds gathered in the Senate District and outside the Imperial Palace, waving imperial flags, cheering, shouting, laughing and chanting, “Hail to the Emperor! Hail Lord Vader!” In the alien protection zone, crowds sang “The Ten Thousand Year Empire.” Throughout the Sah'c district, airspeeder drivers honked horns deep into the night.

“For over two decades, Kenobi has been the Jedi rebellion’s leader and symbol,” the Lord of the Sith said in a statement broadcast across the galaxy via HoloNet. “The death of Kenobi marks the most significant achievement to date in our empire’s effort to defeat the rebel alliance. But his death does not mark the end of our effort. There’s no doubt that the rebellion will continue to pursue attacks against us. We must and we will remain vigilant at home and abroad.”

Obi-Wan Kenobi ’s demise is a defining moment in the stormtrooper-led fight against terrorism, a symbolic stroke affirming the relentlessness of the pursuit of those who turned against the Empire at the end of the Clone Wars. What remains to be seen, however, is whether it galvanizes Kenobi’s followers by turning him into a martyr or serves as a turning of the page in the war against the Rebel Alliance and gives further impetus to Emperor Palpatine to step up Stormtrooper recruitment.

In an earlier statement issued to the press, Kenobi boasted that striking him down could make him "more powerful than you could possibly imagine."

How much his death will affect the rebel alliance itself remains unclear. For years, as they failed to find him, Imperial leaders have said that he was more symbolically important than operationally significant because he was on the run and hindered in any meaningful leadership role. Yet he remained the most potent face of terrorism in the Empire, and some of those who played down his role in recent years nonetheless celebrated his death.

Given Kenobi’s status among radicals, the Imperial Galactic government braced for possible retaliation. A Grand Moff of the Imperial Starfleet said late Sunday that military bases in the core worlds and around the galaxy were ordered to a higher state of readiness. The Imperial Security Bureau issued a galactic travel warning, urging citizens in volatile areas “to limit their travel outside of their local star systems and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations.”

The strike could deepen tensions within the Outer Rim, which has periodically bristled at Imperial counterterrorism efforts even as Kenobi evidently found safe refuge it its territories for nearly two decades. Since taking over as Supreme Commander of the Imperial Navy, Lord Vader has ordered significantly more strikes on suspected terrorist targets in the Outer Rim, stirring public anger there and leading to increased criminal activity.

When the end came for Kenobi, he was found not in the remote uncharted areas of Wild Space and the Unknown Regions, where he has long been presumed to be sheltered, but in a massive compound about an hour’s drive west from the Tatooine capital of Bestine. He had been living under the alias "Ben" Kenobi for some time.

The compound, only about 50 miles from the base of operations for the Imperial Storm Squadron, is at the end of a narrow dirt road and is roughly eight times larger than other homes in the area, which were largely occupied by Tusken Raiders. When Imperial operatives converged on the planet on Saturday, following up on recent intelligence, two local moisture farmers “resisted the assault force” and were killed in the middle of an intense gun battle, a senior Stormtrooper said, but details were still sketchy early Monday morning.

A representative of the Imperial Starfleet said that military and intelligence officials first learned last summer that a “high-value target” was hiding somewhere on the desert world and began working on a plan for going in to get him. Beginning in March, Lord Vader worked closely with a series of several different Admirals serving onboard the Death Star to go over plans for the operation, and on Friday morning gave the final order for members of the 501st Legion (known commonly as "Vader's Fist") to strike.

Kenobi and a group of his followers were eventually captured while fleeing the system, and taken aboard the Death Star, which was in the midst of surveying the recent environmental disaster on Alderaan. Darth Vader called it a “targeted operation,” although officials said four tie fighters were lost because of "mechanical failures" and had to be destroyed to keep them from falling into hostile hands.

In addition to Kenobi, two men and one wookiee were killed, one believed to be his young apprentice and the other two his couriers, according to an admiral who briefed reporters under Imperial ground rules forbidding further identification. A woman was killed when she was used as a shield by a male combatant, the Admiral said. Two droids were also reported missing.

“No Stormtroopers were seriously harmed,” Lord Vader said. “They took care to avoid civilian casualties. After a firefight, I defeated my former master and took custody of his body.” Jedi tradition requires burial within 24 hours, but by doing it in deep space, Imperial authorities presumably were trying to avoid creating a shrine for his followers.

Lord Vader has denied requests to present photographs of the body, describing them as "too gruesome" for the general public.

Anyone watching Killing bin Laden tonight on Military Channel?

Killing bin Laden

An intimate account of the bin Laden operation - from the time the crucial intelligence was gathered through the burial at sea. Explore the details of how the operation was planned and executed, and see through the eyes of the highly-trained Seal Team 6.

I have no clue what it's going to be like, how much details the show will have on the actual mission and actual events that happened during it, but Military Channel usually does a pretty good job with their shows, so it'll probably still be a good hour of television.

If anyone has Military Channel and is going to be up at 1am tonight, I recommend watching the repeat of this show, Killing bin Laden. Military Channel has done a great job on yet another show. I've never seen a bad show on it. They've got a former SEAL Team Six officer, CIA Director Leon Panetta, one of the former CIA directors, the current Deputy National Security Advisor, various military officials (including a retired Army general), civilian experts, etc, commenting throughout the show on various aspects of it all. They talk about how the CIA tracked down where he was, the methods they used.

They have a couple snippets of the actual raid video, as well as have a large amount of reenactment of the raid through the various buildings and floors via computer animation. They talk about the methods they used there on the scene to identify him and confirm they had located him and later confirmed it was bid Laden they had killed while still on the ground there in the compound, etc.

They talk about why the one helicopter went down, what changes were made to the mission on the spot after it down (one helo was to land in the compound, another hover over the roof and that team rappel down, with one team on the ground moving up through the building, the roof team moving down), instead the helo that was still flying landed outside the compound and used explosives to breach the wall and both teams moved in on the ground, splitting up between the main house and guest house, etc.

Definitely a very interesting show with some new information about various aspects of the raid being mentioned or talked about.

Yeah, they talked about the helos as well. They used a modified, special ops version of the Black Hawk. It had technology to dampen the rotor noise, it had stealth paint to minimize the radar signature, it had technology to cool the engine exhaust so there wouldn't be a big heat signature, etc. They talk about how they sneaked below radar cover, flying with night vision and basically flying low along the ground to stay below the terrain features, as well as taking the LONG way around through the mountains, going through areas that had little or no radar coverage than trying to go straight to the compound on the quickest route, but also a ton of radar coverage.

They had two Chinooks with them, they had UAVs up as well giving real time video of the raid, they also had multiple fighter jets either ready to go or already up in the air near the border to be able to swoop in if need either due to issues with the raid, or in case if Pakistan had launched their own fighters due to the incursion into Pakistan air space being detected by radar.

There is so much stuff they talk about between the information gathering over the years, the build up to the raid, the raid itself, the activities after the raid and ID'ing bin Laden's body, the days after the raid, the information they captured from the compound, etc. It is a really interesting show. I watched the entire show when it premiered for the first time at 10pm, and I'm staying up to watch it again when it repeats at 1am. Partly because I want to watch it again it was so interesting, also to try and catch some minor things I might have missed mentioned, talked about or shown, and lastly because the 10pm and 1am showings tonight are the only times Military Channel has it airing between tonight and May 30th.

It looks like they did. At least based on the tv listings on the Discovery Channel website, it was on at 10pm Sunday night and 1am Monday morning. Though I never saw a single promo or commercial for it. I saw tons of them for the past week on Military Channel, never heard a peep about it on Discovery.
