Who are you hoping your team picks?

Tonight it looks like Da Bears are going with a boring OL pick....but they may reach for Marvin Austin.

saints pick 24th. we need a DE. possibly a LB. plenty of D line talent in this draft.

I just think Carolina is making a mistake taking newton. He is not worth #1.. i think they should trade down...

gschwendt
04-28-2011, 01:28 PM
Thankfully the Jets don't have any HUGE needs... they just need to return as many players from last year as possible and just improve. Most predict them picking OLB Akeem Ayers from UCLA. I'll be curious what they end up doing with the rest of the draft.

If he was available in the 3rd round I'd still be upset if the Steelers took him. I'm a HUGE seller when it comes to Newton. I loved when Gruden asked him to rattle of a play and he more then a little dumbfounded and just said well I look to the sidelines for a number.

The Panthers should trade down for sure, problem is most teams aren't looking for that #1 overall pick to be honest especially with what you'd have to give up.

Oops forgot who I wanted the Steelers to take. I wouldn't mind that CB from Texas. I think his name is Aaron Williams.

JBHuskers
04-28-2011, 01:29 PM
Good chance that Da Bears trade down and don't pick in the 1st round for the 2nd straight year.

Agreed. bu there are 4 Elite players on the board that could make an impact as a rookie. all have elite probowl potential. and i dont see them not filling those expectations. I would take Peterson, Dareus, Miller, or Green #1. they all deserve it and will be worth it. i ahve a feeling peterson will be the next woodson.

Lots of speculation on what the Steelers will do. Their obvious needs are at OL and CB. The popular pick for them at 31 is, as snoop said, Aaron Williams. There may be a couple of corners on the board there, and Pittsburgh may have a chance to trade down a few slots and still get one. There has been a lot of speculation that the Steelers are looking to move up to get Mike Pouncey. While I'd be all for it, I doubt they're willing to move up that far.

After the 2 biggest needs (and multiple CBs and OL are likely in order), they may be looking for another HB, and more DL depth. An eventual replacement for Casey Hampton needs to be found in the next couple of years, and another DE too.

zacattak
04-28-2011, 02:09 PM
steelerfan, agreed it would be hard to move up that far. but with 2 pouncey's on the same team. your guaranteed to have them both happy.

My Skins have so many needs, it's ridiculous. I'm hoping we can trade back and get another 2nd or a 3rd and really clean up on the top half of the draft (which is SUPER deep outside of QB).

JBHuskers
04-28-2011, 03:23 PM
Yeah Pouncey is looking to go around the 15th pick area.

Kingpin32
04-28-2011, 04:22 PM
I think the Cowboys are getting an OL, but I also think we could use a new corner, such as Prince ______ or even Patrick Peterson, but I don't see him dropping down to #9.

Kingpin32
04-28-2011, 04:23 PM
I also have to add that Deion may have had the best draft day outfit ever.

I think Peterson will go in the 5-7 range, Amukamara could go as high as 9, probably 12 to the Lions, some think Amukamara could drop further than that.

JBHuskers
04-28-2011, 04:31 PM
I wouldn't be surprised if Peterson goes top 4 though. He might be a surprise high pick.

CLW
04-28-2011, 04:31 PM
I just need to find "my" NFL team. I really just don't have one. I always want to watch the "best" game every Sunday.

I'm going to TRY to get into the Texans as I am moving to Houston in a few months and will be there for at least the next 4 years. IMHO Houston's offense is pretty good so I would expect them to try to pick up some defensive talent. Perhaps trade up? I see allot of you talking about trading down. I'm personally high on the Miller and Peterson but I'm not sure how high up they'd have to get either guy (likely too costly).

At #11 I'd say the Smith kid from Mizzou; Watt from Wisconsin; Clayborn Iowa at DE make sense to me to go opposite of Williams. Secondary help couldn't hurt either so possibly: Prince from Nebraska or Smith out of Colorado would make some sense as well.

JBHuskers
04-28-2011, 04:34 PM
Texans are always supposed to be that breakthrough team for the past three/four years....but then never follow through.

Yes I recall drafting Slaton as one of my Fantasy backs 2 seasons ago and being PISSED all year long at them/him. My attempt to find my NFL team will likely fail miserably. For whatever reason (likely player turnover) I just cannot follow one team in ANY of the professional sports.

Kingpin32
04-28-2011, 04:43 PM

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. If he somehow dropped that low, if I was the Cowboys, I would definitely take him.

the draft is the draft..it just happens.

I dont get into all the preliminary crap. I dont know who's who. I'll get to know them later on what ever team.

actually, its just an excuse to get together with a few friends tonight

morsdraconis
04-28-2011, 04:55 PM
Peterson is gonna be top 3 most likely and I wouldn't be surprised if Carolina takes him #1 instead of Newton. Peterson is the can't miss player in this draft and pretty much the only one. Carolina would be nuts to take a QB instead of him, but they'll probably take Newton instead and regret it for 4-5 years.

04-28-2011, 06:43 PM
hahahaha they BOOOOO'd the Commissioner !!!!!!!!

Carolina should be deregulated (like English Soccer) if they pick Newton #1. I'm no genius and could be proven wrong but Newton just SCREAMS BUST. I'm talking Ryan Leaf/JaMarcus Russell level bust.

Hell, he wasn't even in the Top 20 of most mock drafts as of a couple weeks ago, and yet all of a sudden he's a number one pick supposedly.

CLW

ESPN is reporting the Pats are looking to trade UP? WTF I'm going to have to check but I believe the Book of Revelation clearly says that is the FINAL sign before the Apocalypse!!!!

LMAO Newton smiling he must be the #1 pick. Some teams just really shock me. I mean Newton put up silly #s in college but the NFL is another Beast.

Did I miss something? Did Newton light it up at the combine or something. The kid just strikes me as a great athlete but not particularly sharp and has character issues to boot from what I recall.

SmoothPancakes
04-28-2011, 07:07 PM
And it's official. And in my opinion, a thrown away pick by Carolina. I just don't see Newton as #1 pick worthy. I can a lot more easily see him ending up as a career bench rider/bust than turning into a quarterbacking savior for the Panthers.

Yeah, either of those two would work for me, also possibly Marcell Dareus. It'll be hard to miss with this pick.

Minus the character issues, Blaine Gabbert is the same way. Gabbert did less in college, but somehow he was elevated towards the top by draft 'experts.'

Yeah could be an Indy like rush off the edge on passing downs.

AJ Green; Ohco; T.O.

Kingpin32
04-28-2011, 07:26 PM
Von Miller went to high school not to far from ours. Got to play against him in high school, great pick Broncos.

CLW
04-28-2011, 07:29 PM
Does Zona make a "reach" for a QB here or do they try to trade for Kolb?

Kingpin32
04-28-2011, 07:30 PM
Looks like they're going for Peterson.

CLW
04-28-2011, 07:30 PM
Peterson should be a good CB

CLW
04-28-2011, 07:33 PM
Cleveland should go with Quinn here.

CLW
04-28-2011, 07:35 PM
Atlanta with Matty Ice Jones and White thats a nice trio.

CLW
04-28-2011, 07:37 PM
wow Cleveland just RAPED Atlanta. Advantage Browns on that trade.

SmoothPancakes
04-28-2011, 07:38 PM
Question is, with as many draft picks that they gave up to reach clear up to #6, was it worth it?

Kingpin32
04-28-2011, 07:38 PM
Atlanta is gonna be something else next year.

CLW
04-28-2011, 07:39 PM

Atlanta is gonna be something else next year.

Good points. It is the classic team that is ready to win NOW and a team that needs to rebuild. Cleveland clearly got a TON of picks so if they draft reasonably well they should do pretty good off the trade.

IMHO Cleveland got the better deal but if Jones is a home run for them Atlanta could threaten Green Bay in the NFC.

CLW
04-28-2011, 07:43 PM
Interesting pick by the 49ers. I think Smith would have been available mid 1st round though. I guess 49ers are either confident in Smith or are going to go after Kolb.

Kingpin32

Am I the only one that hates the coverage of the draft that they "spoil" the announced draft by showing the player on the phone? I'd rather wait and hear it officially from the commissioner personally.

zacattak
04-28-2011, 07:44 PM

SmoothPancakes
04-28-2011, 08:02 PM

Yeah, I'm actually glad the Broncos were picking #2. They were pretty much assured of a great pick no matter which defensive player they chose, and I didn't have to sit here wondering if they would screw the pooch with a bad mid-round pick.

SmoothPancakes
04-28-2011, 08:02 PM

SmoothPancakes
04-28-2011, 08:08 PM

Yeah... If I was a team looking for a franchise QB to hang our future on, I'm looking for a filler in free agency to get through to next year. I am just not very impressed with this QB class.

CLW
04-28-2011, 08:08 PM

CLW
04-28-2011, 08:19 PM
GMs having issues thinking long-term. Look if the QBs suck this year they suck this year. If you are picking this high in the draft you have more than 1 need at QB.

SmoothPancakes
04-28-2011, 08:20 PM
Agreed. I didn't see Ponder going for a while yet. Granted, it sounded like Minny was trying to shop around that 12th pick and apparently didn't get any interest, forcing them to make the pick. Better to take him now instead of risk not being able to trade back up to grab him later I suppose.

CLW
04-28-2011, 08:20 PM

God I hope 12 is a great upgrade so I can get into franchise again, especially with Denver having gone into a slide the past couple years, meaning I can now actually work on building them up instead of starting off with them as a playoff contender from the gate.

That too. :) I was never really a big fan of Tebow while he was in college, but since he got drafted by the Broncos, he's grown a lot on me. After watching his ESPN Year of the QB special, I'm drinking the Tebow kool-aid. I really hope John Elway and John Fox give Tebow a true chance to grow into a franchise QB for the Broncos. He clearly has it in him to put in the effort and work to do what he needs to do to reach that level.

Things are also really interesting in regards to the Broncos. With the #4 and #14 picks in the second round, they could either trade back into the very end of the 1st round and grab one of these big defensive names still on the board, or even still have some big names to pick tomorrow night.

Only five players named "Cameron" have been drafted entering this year, and eight players with first names starting with "Cam" have been drafted before tonight. Just getting home, but in watching the draft, it was really cool seeing Von Miller's reaction and hugging Goddell when most thought he wouldn't even shake his hand. I also loved the emotion from Ingram. Fairley next to Suh is going to be straight up NASTY. Danny Watkins is a hell of a story out of Baylor, was pretty cool to see his day yesterday at the NYFD. For me the shockers of the night were Locker 8th to Tennessee ahead of Gabbert (who I'm not all that high on anyways), and the Ravens doing their best Minnesota Vikings imitation. As for Da Bears, pretty stoked at Carimi, was wondering if they'd take a chance on Marvin Austin...they may still in the 2nd round. I was expecting OT or DT in the first, so I wasn't going to be really WOW'd with anything unless they traded up to get Amukamara (which would have been awesome). Looking forward to tomorrow night!

I think the Saints should keep Reggie and play him more at wideout. He's always been a more effective pass catcher the runner in the pros and the Saints can still keep Thomas and Ivory.

JBHuskers

The thing with the Saints is the same as with the Packers...the backs have a hard time staying healthy. From Rotoworld:

The Bengals reportedly tried and failed to trade into the Packers' 32nd spot Thursday night.

Cincinnati was presumably chasing TCU QB Andy Dalton, but they couldn't agree on fair compensation. At this point, the entire league knows they have Dalton in their sights at No. 35 overall. It's a safe bet they're already talking with the Patriots about moving up three spots to ensure their quarterback of the future.

(I'm going through the thread now :D)

Touche. However, all of these QBs are HUGE gambles. IF I were a GM in need of a QB and my team wasn't ready to make the playoffs I would pass on a QB this year in the draft and: (1) try to get one via trade (Kolb); (2) Free Agent/stop gap measure. To me its WAY to short sided for some of these teams to REACH for a QB when they have a TON of wholes and are no where near ready to make a serious run.

Of the teams that reached on QBs last night (every one that drafted a QB IMHO) ONLY Minn could make the argument they need a QB now and have a legit shot to compete if they land the right QB.

IF I were Minn and wanted to make the reach and pray for a home run I would have gone with Mallet as I think he has the most potential or Dalton. The rest of the teams IMHO had no business taking QBs last night as none of them were worthy of their high selections and they ALL had other needs that could have been filled with better players.

Two of those three won't be in Cincy this year I don't think.

I thought T.O. was a FA but Ocho the soccer player was under K (assuming his MLS gig falls apart - which it will unless the MLS is a complete joke)

Yes...I HATE that.

That was indeed the MOST annoying part of the coverage. I didn't see if NFL Network did it but I am thinking of trying their coverage tonight.

That's a little early :D and no, 1999 gave us no one really but McNabb :D

I'll give you this entire draft class of QBs and none of them will be > than McNabb's career. This year's class of QBs just SCREAMS bust to me. Of course, I say that and it will turn into the Marino class.

We know who has more gel in it :D

I think that was a panic button move with Locker going so high....bet Vikes were targeting Locker.

That might be the world's biggest question right now :D I added to it by responding to you guys since I wasn't home watching the draft ;)

Yeah but you "cash in" on your whoring. The Patriots never cash in on all these picks they just keep trading them for future picks which will be traded for future picks, etc....

Wow I didn't realize Palmer was really just going to retire. Clearly, Cinci feels they need a QB.

Perfect trade last night (assuming Palmer would have agreed) - Palmer to Minnesota for a 1st Rounder (Cinci drafts QB) + fill in the blanks.

Minn would have become an immediate contender. Minnesota gets rid of Palmer and gets their QB of the future that they want to reach on.

ESPN's James Walker: Baltimore coming up soon in the AFC North. Early prediction: Ravens will not negotiate a trade with the Chicago Bears.

Temple and Baylor combined have the same number of players drafted thus far as Ohio State, Penn State, Texas, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Michigan and Tennessee

And the pick whoring by the Pats continues. :D

Patriots trade the 60th overall pick to Houston. Acquire a third-rounder (73) and a fifth-rounder (138).

My God, Mallet's gonna drop all the way into the 3rd round.

Steelers go to pouncey and say "hey we could not get your brother, so how about a teammate?" lol.. good pick for them tho. if he makes the transition to the NFL

If the Bills or Cardinals do not take Mallet right here, he is tumbling for a long time.

I leave to go eat, come back, and Mallett is still on the board?

Yeah, having worked with Maurkice before and being versatile enough to have played each OL position but Center can only be a plus. The Steelers haven't done well in the 2nd round in recent years, though last year's #2, Jason Worilds, has shown promise.

WOW! Patriots take Mallet in the 3rd round with the 74th pick. Hope you wanted to spend your whole career riding the bench kid.

Of all teams to take someone with issues....the Patriots could get the most out of Mallett by having him be Brady's study for 4-5 years like Rodgers. He just needs to stay away from the Sam Adams. :D

You mean you don't want Pat Devlin or Scott Tolzien? They're the next Tom Brady! :P

i'd prefer a qb who could play well all game long....not just in the 4th quarter. :)

Wow, the Patriots going reverse trade whoring, giving away two while only gaining one. Though it was a gain round-wise.

Raiders traded their 2012 2nd-round pick to NE for Patriots' 3rd and 4th this year. So New England now has double 1s and 2s in 2012. Again.
