In his senior season, Malcolm Kutner was one of two Longhorns from the great 1941 team that was recognized as an All-American.

Kutner was a main cog in D.X. Bible's innovative offense, one that drew praise as perhaps the best in the nation.

Kutner was a three-year letterman in football, and became the first Texas player to be selected to the Chicago Tribune's Collegiate All-Star Game.

After serving in World War II, Kutner played five seasons with the Chicago Cardinals. He earned the Rookie of the Year award, two All-Pro selections, and MVP honors during his time in the pros.

Also starring in basketball and track, Kutner was inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor in 1965. He was later voted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1974.

Is considered one of the top 50 Texas Longhorns of All-Time and is the grandfather of my wife.

Yes, I tore up my knee pretty bad my senior year of high school and spent the rest of the season rehabbing, the only scholarship locally I could get was to Hardin-Simmons University in Abiline, TX . I went and it was a big change from the metroplex, all my friends ended up at Texas, I wanted to be there, so I transfered and attempted to walk on my sophomore year and promptly tore up my other knee in practice before the season. That was when I went from spending most of my time in the weight room/field to the coaches office/film room. At the end of my sophomore year my father was in the hospital with what looked like cancer at the time so I ended up coming home going to school and started volunteer coaching at Coppell HS.

SI did a list of The Greatest College Football Players By Number 1-99 a few years back. I am using the images from that "countdown". If you have a favorite team(s) you can probably just go to the official sports page and find their roster and then Google search for any images of that player.

In 1984, Byars rushed for over 1,700 yards and 22 touchdowns. In one game against Illinois, he set the single-game record by carving up 274 and five touchdowns. And yes, the legend is true….he scored one of those touchdowns with only one shoe on. The other came flying off halfway down the field.Sadly, I can't find the video.

The Buckeyes had the ball at their own 33, and Tomczak handed to Byars over right tackle. He ran through a big hole toward the right sideline, then made a sharp cut back to the middle as he crossed into Illinois territory. When he made the cut, his left shoe came loose. Byars kicked the shoe off without losing a stride, and ran the last 41 yards to the end zone without it. The 67-yard run was replayed endlessly on news highlights and is still the most famous play of his college career.

Our All American linebacker, Clint Sellers wore that number and on the very first play (the kickoff) of our senior year against the University of Illinois, he smacked the returner and got injured and his career was ended instantly. He can not use his right arm anymore...still hurts just thinking about it. But yea, that's the story behind it, we paid tribute to him by doing that.
