I used the power of persuasion (or something) to talk Verizon into letting me upgrade two and a half months early from this crappy ass Blackberry Curve to the Droid X. Pretty happy about that. It'll be nice to have a smartphone that can actually function like a smartphone.

A friend of mine uses it. IIRC, he said it takes a bit to get used to, but once used to it you will like it.

While others are sporting iPhones, I'm still using a phone. This old POS, but I'm not important enough to justify the data plan for a smart phone.

There's really no risk. It's SUPER easy to root your phone and there are plenty of websites online that tell you how to do it.

Rooting is pretty easy. I've rooted, returned to stock, and rooted again my Epic. When Samsung forced their 2.2 update, it started killing my battery so I decided I would root it again.

I would try the xda forums that was mentioned in an earlier post to make sure unrevoked will work for your phone (i'm almost certain it will though). The thing is you want to find the simpliest way to do it, because all you are in essence doing is giving yourself superuser permissions.

Its really hard to brick your phone non the less I absolutely messed up doing my hero and everything still worked on the phone and I was having to root it the hard way.

I dont know which root version you did but all I did was a basic root and I was still able to get OS updates. If all else fails normally after an update around a couple of weeks it will be posted on whatever website you got the mod from and you can just upload it from there.

In the Amazon App Store, the pro version of Quickoffice Pro is only $2.99. It's a good program to read and edit MS Office docs.

Anyone know if there is an Android app that allows you to access Citrix? My firm (and almost all law firms) use Citrix to access documents and e-mail when out of the office. I hate carrying around my BlackBerry (POS) and would rather just check my work e-mail from my Droid.

I asked IT about it when I got the phone and they indicated they couldn't set up my phone to receive work e-mail b/c of some sort of security issue.

oweb26
05-09-2011, 12:17 PM
I am unsure of that one but the android phone is terrible when it comes to secruity. The problem really comes from apps and Google in general because they require so much freedom on these phones, I think last I read Google was actually getting there shit together so they can be a more secure phone. I really wouldn't hold my breathe in finding a secure app to read anything on Google unless it's taking to a secure website.

So after all that my simple answer is I doubt it.

Well my Citrix site I have to go to to access my work e-mail from home is an https:// website

My phone gets me all the way to the point where you need to click on/download the "inbox" icon and when I do that my e-mail does not pop up and I get some sort of error message.

Just ordered a Motorola Atrix... reviews for it sounded really good and it was $100 through Amazon Wireless (normally $200 through AT&T) so I jumped on it. Anyone who has one, let me know what you think.

I was also looking at the Samsung Infuse but it was $180 through Amazon ($200 through AT&T) and most matchups between it & the Atrix, the Atrix won.

Got my Atrix in today (one day early, woohoo!). So far I'm really liking it, though going from a dumbphone (Samsung Impression) to a smartphone is a fairly big leap and if nothing else, the touchscreen is so much smoother than my old phone.

So far I have some of the basic apps but anyone have any Android apps to recommend to me?

For text messaging, I would use handcent. If you use twitter a lot, tweetcaster is probably the best app, but twitdroyd is good too. You should definitely get Google Shopper, since that has a barcode scanner included. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

What does handcent do that regular android texting doesn't do? For twitter though, I'm using tweetdeck... already use it on my Chrome browser so I'm comfortable with it.

Otherwise though, I think I have my setup just about how I want it... still playing but for the most part, it's starting to take shape. The only thing I can't decide on is a music player... going with Winamp for now but open to suggestions.

So my Verizon contract is up in August. I've got one last new every 2 phone upgrade for me but the wife doesn't since she is under my plan. We both have the original Motorola Droid. I REALLY like the slide out keyboard feature as sometimes I just prefer to have an actual keyboard over the touch screen.

Any suggestions on phones I should take a look at once I move and I can get a free upgrade?

Not sure if this one is available to you, but, as of right now, it's the most beastly phone available (though doesn't have a QWERTY keyboard):

http://www.phonegg.com/Samsung/I9100-Galaxy-S-II/Samsung-I9100-Galaxy-S-II.html

The stats:

1.2 GHz dual core processor
1 gig of RAM
Android OS
480x800px display (using the Super AMOLED technology that Samsung developed that makes AMOLED brighter and easier to see in direct sunlight without hampering battery life)
MicroSD expansion slot
16gig internal storage

Needless to say, this will probably be the phone that I eventually buy when I do get another cellphone.

That looks to be an AT&T exclusive (as best I can tell). :smh: I have NEVER understood that from a phone manufacturer stand point. From a carrier standpoint it obviously makes sense to try to lock in the best phones you can. Sort of reminds me of the exclusive video games but many eventually just went to all platforms to make the most $.

After some research, it looks like it will be available for Verizon as well soon and definitely available by the time you are looking to upgrade. Only issue is whether or not it's 4G (LTE (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3GPP_Long_Term_Evolution)) capable as not being LTE capable would be a pretty big downside considering pretty much all new phones on T-Mobile are doing at least pre-LTE (faster than 3G but not fully LTE) and Verizon and AT&T are starting to get with the program as well.

I believe if you have a smartphone you have to have a data package.

I'm getting the Droid Incredible next week with my switch to Verizon. I know it's not the hot new thing, but solid phone from what I can tell by reviews and it's a step up from my Hero which I liked a lot. The only thing that really stinks is I have to get an Omaha number since there are no more available numbers from here.

Does anyone have a Samsung Infuse?

My phone has just about shit the bed (2G Blackberry Curve which I've had for nearly 3 years). Or, likely more accurate, AT&T is killing 2G service to make me think my phone is shitting the bed. Regardless, I've had it. If I'm going to upgrade, I figured I may as well jump to 4G and there are limited options at this point. The Infuse looks like the best one. Anyone have one or have a better 4G phone from AT&T?

Actually saw that one for 49.99 (I've been off-contract for 2.25 years). Looks good too, I just think the Infuse looks better. I'm tempted just to leave AT&T though (for true 4G) since they're dragging their feet with their transition to 4G.

The Infuse is interesting, but I can't find anything on how much RAM it has and a single core 1.2ghz processor is ok, but don't plan on multitasking at all with it and, I can tell you from experience, that Android 2.2 with flash installed and all of that is going to run like shit on it. After the upgrade to 2.0, Android has been running extremely slow on phones after you get about 3-4 months into use (aka, after you install some stuff to the phone and everything). Of course, I had the original Droid (600mhz processor and 256MB RAM was all) so it may run better on twice the processor and 2-3x the RAM.

Oh, also, the Infuse is freakin' huge. It's almost the same size as a tablet... I'm usually not one to care about the size of phones, but man, it's pretty damn big.

I hate touchscreens. I'm thinking that the bigger screen may help with that since there isn't a QWERTY 4G that isn't a POS.

That can vary, it enables you to modify ANYTHING on your phone, but you gotta be careful what you do. Also an unrooted phone doesn't allow you to use a screen capture program, plus you can overclock the processor, among other things you can do while rooted.

There's an app & program that you can hook up your phone to your PC via USB and capture images that way. Obviously can't do it on the fly but if you really need to grab an image, you can.

Reviving this thread (after spending 5 minutes looking for the damn thing) because I'm SERIOUSLY thinking about buying this phone:

Samsung Galaxy SIII 16gb (http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-Galaxy-Android-Phone-Blue/dp/B00891P3QI/ref=sr_1_1?s=wireless&ie=UTF8&qid=1342014197&sr=1-1&keywords=samsung+galaxy+s3)

This specs on this thing are DISGUSTING:

Dual-core 1.5 GHz processor
4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED multi-touch screen (1280 x 720 pixels)
16 GB internal memory
2 GB RAM

It's just ridiculous how powerful this phone is and I can get it for $149.99 with a two year plan (at $79.99/month) through Sprint (who I would be going through anyway because they're the only carrier in WV with unlimited internet anymore).

It's DAMN tempting...

Yeah my grandfathered unlimited data had to be forfeited. But my Droid X was really getting bogged down, outdated, scratched up...I was ready for a new one. Also, I wasn't really getting close to 2GB anyways on a regular basis. On average I'd be around 1/2 to 3/4 of a gig.

It's just tricky how you take a screenshot. Hold down the power button and volume down at the same time. It's like playing twister.

The thing that "scares" me is notification if/when I get near a data limit. I NEVER come close to my minute or text usage and they are obviously much easier to keep track of in your head instead of data. I would presume/home you got a text when you approach your data limit.

Anyone have experience with a Samsung Galaxy S3 vs HTC One X+?

Right now I'm leaning towards the S3 only because it has expandable memory which is a pretty big deal, thought he X+ comes with 64GB so it's not a huge deal. As well, I love my phone mounted in my car for trips, etc. but it looks like neither has a true car dock that hooks up. They both have a dock that you can mount it, but then you have to plug in the audio cable instead of it being built in (like my Atrix is).

Anyone know of any nice Android phones coming out in the next month or so for AT&T?

Here's the breakdown of the specs of the two. (http://www.phonegg.com/comparison/Comparez.php?p1=2463&p2=2592)

Pay close attention to the fact that, while the S III is only 1.5 dual core whereas the One X+ is 1.7 quadcore, the SIII does have more RAM (2 vs 1) and, the most important aspect, I think, is the S III has native Java MIDP 2.0 support whereas the One X+ does not.

Personally, I'd still go with the S III, but I've had a hard on for it since it was first introduced.

I've looked at all kinds of breakdowns and most of them essentially throw them up as a tie. I guess I'm not sure what the benefit of MIDP 2.0 is... is that for use on the software developer's end or what?

The other aspects I've read say that the One X+ has a better battery life and also that it has a better aperture on the camera. As well, everybody & their brother is looking to get a SIII it seems and I often like to go the beaten bath.

Right now, I really can't quite make up my mind... I'm split between the 2. On one hand, as mentioned, I pretty much already know everything there is about the SIII but the more I learn about the One X+, it is starting to pull me in.

Oh, also, the S III has a MUCH brighter screen compared to ANY phone that's not a Samsung phone (the AMOLED screen is SIGNIFICANTLY brighter).

As for MIDP 2.0, it's a developer's thing, but also, without it, limits what type of java based apps you are going to have available to you (meaning that the phone won't be able to handle them or because they just won't work on your java architecture). Whether or not that actually means anything is really unknown.

As for the cameras or the battery life being better, that's impossible because they have the exact same specs in both instances. Comparing battery life for two phones of the same type, much less, two different ones, is VERY difficult because, depending on something as simple at the display brightness being different on a phone can DRASTICALLY change the battery life of a phone.

Again, I'm biased toward the S III, but based on the screen clearness alone, I'd go with it over any other phone.

need some suggestions here. my parents and i are getting new phones for christmas, with definitely an unlimited texting and data package.

as far as picture/video capability, my parents probably wont take the time to learn how to do that. they dont twitter or facebook. they'll pretty much only learn how to go on the internet for news and text. it doesnt really matter to me what kind of phone i get either. i'll probably be using the internet the most out of all 3 of us. are different phones faster at being on the internet?

thoughts/suggestions?

JeffHCross

The only real difference, that I'm aware of, regarding Internet speeds on phones is the actual wireless network connection. I.e. 4G, 3G, etc. I suppose the processor could make a difference, but I wouldn't think a significant one (considering what phones are downloading).

In response for this, my wife was able to talk to someone she works with at Disney who is seasonal and their primary job is at AT&T. She was able to get my wife in touch with someone in charge of this stuff. Anyway, turns out in the month of September we had a dropped call rate of over 7% and since then has been over 2.5%. Well the guy told my wife with the 7% it shows him we needed a MicroCell signal booster. We got it last Friday and we now get full bars all over the house! It is so nice to be able to text or call from anywhere in the house instead of looking like someone trying to fix the rabbit ears on an old TV to get signal. :D

All it really does from what I've seen online is, while your reading and then you look away it stoos scrolling . Same goes for video .. I can't wait for the s4. Oh also I've seen a picture of an xbox look alike add on controller for s4 I assume for gaming

CLW, how are you liking the S4? My phone (ancient as it was) finally bit the shit last night, so I am currently without a cell phone until I can figure out what new phone and plan I'm getting and going out to the store this Saturday. Galaxy S4 is currently top of my list (multiple people at work have it and haven't had any complaints with it), so wanted to see what your thought was.

Anyone else have any cell phones to recommend? It's going to be through Verizon, they have the best cell service here where I live. Sprint is shit around this area for cell service, and those are really about the only two options.

Smooth I like this Note 3 that I have

Battery goes fast with my set up but love this phone...even though I don't use it nearly enough for what it can be used for. Fast, I have a tone of storage and love the screen size.

Thing is huge but I have fairly large hands so that doesn't bother me.

Is there a reason you aren't looking at the S5 (http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/device/smartphone/samsung-galaxy-s5?&zipRdr=y)?

Is there a reason you aren't looking at the S5 (http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/device/smartphone/samsung-galaxy-s5?&zipRdr=y)?
http://www.techtimes.com/articles/5056/20140401/samsung-galaxy-s5-jumps-the-gate-early-and-gets-u-s-release-ahead-of-april-11-launch.htm

Well, I knew about the S5, but I had no clue when it would actually release. I just called the local Verizon store, and it releases April 11th, but even the guy at the store had no clue when I would actually get the phone. Unfortunately, I really can't wait. I need a phone. I use it for both work and personal. So far, I've gotten through these past three days keeping in touch for stuff with work via email, but I need to have a phone as soon as I can get one, I need the ability to call and text for work.

Also, I just did a side by side comparison of the phone specs, and honestly, there's really nothing that would make me go "HEY!" and wait an extra week plus to get the S5. Sure, it's got a bit better chip and the processor is a little faster, but otherwise, there's really nothing on the phone that is something that seems "gotta have" to me. A little better megapixel camera, meh. A little better when it comes to shooting video, meh. I don't take that many pictures with my phone and I never once shot video with my current phone, and I had that thing for years.

As far as "features", about the only thing I would really care about on the S5 is the fingerprint ID thingy, so I wouldn't have to enter some password to unlock the phone (if I put a password on it). Otherwise, most everything else compares out pretty even. Phonecalling, messaging, emails, organizer, wi-fi, USB, notifications, sensors, Internet browsing, multimedia, mostly, both phones are almost completely identical.

The screen is a tiny bit bigger, the battery is a little better and lasts a little longer, a bit faster processor, a bit better system chip, a bit better graphics processor, a 3 megapixel better camera, it can take up to 128 GB storage expansion instead of 64 (I have a 16 GB chip for my current phone and never came close to half filling it), it has Fingerprint ID, it has a step counter thing for exercise, it can measure your heartbeat.

Other than that, based on the specs, it's essentially the same as the S4. I don't need to "take shots like a pro", I don't need a "perfect workout partner", etc. It's a phone that I need to use for work and personal, something I can check email on the fly, something I can use as a second web browser if I have something else using up my laptop, something maybe to play a game or two or Sudoku or something while waiting in a doctor's office or waiting for something else.

The S5 seems great, and if it was May right now and the phone was already out, alright, I'd probably get the S5. But right now, I'm going out tomorrow morning at 10am (when the store opens) to get a phone and I won't be leaving without a phone. So, the S4 still will fit the requirements perfectly fine, same as when I looked at the S4 back in October.

Plus, I'm going to be getting a new contract with Verizon and will most likely be getting a second phone, so a S4 for $100 plus a second S4 for free tomorrow, is better than getting a S5 MAYBE next Friday or else who the hell knows when for $200 and a second S5 free. It pretty much comes down to time and urgency of needs, plus a very very similar S4 for $100 cheaper than the S5.

Get your phone?

Yeah, though it's not the Galaxy S4. Got into the store, they didn't even have any S4s in stock. They would have had to order two and they said it would probably be a week. Since I badly needed a phone for work (there were two live remotes, one from 10am to noon on one station and one from noon to 2pm on a second station during the time I was sitting in the phone store and if something had gone wrong, I wouldn't have a single damn clue about it), I had to get a phone yesterday while I could. While they didn't have the S4 in stock, they did have a bunch of Droid phones. So, I ended up getting the Droid Maxx.

It may not be the S4 and may not compare 100% with the S4, in the 27 hours that I've had it at home and have been playing with it, I'm certainly enjoying it. I'm not going to be doing much in regards to streaming music or watching videos or movies. I have my laptop, my Xbox 360 and my Xbox One at home for that, and I am sitting in front of two computers and three computer screens when I'm at work. I don't plan on using much mobile data, I keep my phone exclusively connected to my Wi-fi while at home.

So, my phone primarily is going to be used for calls, texts, emails, and whatever apps I download, which, I have already downloaded a shit ton of apps since yesterday. Tapatalk, Scout, Xbox One Smartglass, Xbox 360 Smartglass, 1Weather, Facebook, Twitter, Xbox Music, IHeartRadio, OneDrive, Google Drive, some Sudoku to enjoy, Beat the Streak app, some apps for Colorado Rockies, Denver Broncos and Colorado Avalanche, some ESPN apps, NHL Gamecenter, MYNBA2K14, QR stuff, and some apps that the local newspapers and local news channels have available.

So while I didn't come home with a Galaxy S4 like I had intended to do so, I'm still content and happy with the phone I have. I will MORE than meet my needs. And in my first foray with Tapatalk, I'm going to love it. I made my first Tapatalk reply in the Titanfall thread, and other than some errors due to my fat fingers, it was very simple and easy to reply through the phone. So Tapatalk will get some major use from me, especially with a couple of other forums that I regularly visit showing up on there. That will make things so much easier as I won't have to constantly keep my laptop open while watching TV or movies.

Yeah, I have no doubt I'll probably run into issues at some point. Hell, this thing is essentially a phone attaches to a computer and my laptop is a goddamn pain in the ass. Haha

Directly underneath the screen on touch screen phones is what is called a digitizer. It is what recognizes the screen taps/swipes. It is really thin and fused together.
Well when my phone screen cracked it also ruined the digitizer.

At first i thought i could get away with just a screen replacement ($19). The repair process is actually harder in that case though...with my phone anyway.

Well the display started fading and none of my screen taps worked really. In that case knew it was both that needed replaced which is easier to do since they come fused together.

The digitizer is easy to damage and mess up so probably would have messed it up taking the screen off. Long explanation i know haha

That was absolutely brutal lastnight!

First it only took 5-10 minutes to take the entire phone apart. Removing the screen took longer, but still wasn't difficult.

The most difficult and frustrating part was cutting the ever so needing to be perfect adhesive strips for the side.

I had everything else finished and in a reasonable time but that. I kid you not to get the strips on the side of the screen, I had to cut them into pieces as wide as an ant. I was up until 5:30 am this morning doing that shit because I kept messing up!!!

Finally finished and phone works, except volume side button but I don't care, refuse to fool with this any more haha.

And I love working with electronics, fixing and putting things together. I am now questioning my hobby and career :D

Glad I didn't just try to replace just the glass screen....yeah that broke into about 100 pieces while trying to take the screen off as expected. That is the most expensive part. The glass screen itself is only $14-19. The digitizer is $170

Should have taken pictures, but it was 5 am and I was tired and pissed so said F it. I have new found respect for the people..and kids likely in Korea that have to put these together by hand for chump change sadly.

Finally dumped my old Droid Maxx (it picked up a bad habit of randomly not sending or receiving any text messages for hours at a time) and am now rolling on a Galaxy S7 as of Saturday evening.

Much like JB, I'm fully on board with wireless charging and bought the wireless charging dock (I love not having to deal with the charging cord) and already had fingerprint set up on my phone before even leaving the store.

Spent from around 9pm Saturday to this morning re-download and logging into all of my apps, resetting notification settings, etc. But I am now 100% up and running on the S7 and no longer need to keep my old phone on me.

And I'm enjoying the leap to Marshmallow. I was still stuck on Kitkat on my old phone, currently on the most recently updated version of Marshmallow. Hopefully with the S7 being only two or three months old at this point, Verizon won't be a douche and will release the update for N/7.0 whenever Google releases it this fall.

As for the S7/S7 Edge debate, I originally was going to get an Edge, but after thinking it over, after checking it out in store, and with the effect of the lower price on the regular S7, I decided to go with the regular S7. The Edge is an interesting feature, but after actually messing with it in store, it turned out to definitely be something I probably wouldn't use every day. That and the curved glass of the Edge screen, from what I've read, is so fucking easy to break, that sort of shied me away from it as well.

Ok. My S5 is starting to show signs that the screen is going to go out. It may go out today, it may be in 6 months, who knows?

That said, I want to act before it does. I'm definitely going with either an S7 or a Note 7. Does anyone have any reasons to pick one over the other? It seems the differences are pretty minimal, including the screen size, but I really am not sure. Cost is not a major factor.

Thanks!

I have one of those. I'm getting tired of it.

How's your sister's nipples? Tell her I'm sorry again, please. I really didn't mean to bite so hard!

:D

Speaking of phones, still no marshmallow update on Note 4 from AT&T, while Sprint, Verizon and Tmobile had theirs out months ago.

May look at the Note 7, but noticed the battery cannot be removed. Defeats the whole purpose of water I know, just like having that option. Regardless of any battery that it is replaced with will be a refurbished aftermarket one.
