EA SPORTS has posted a new blog and video (http://www.ea.com/ncaa-football/blog/ncaa-football-12-first-blog) featuring Art Director Jean Adams & Designer Ben Haumiller discussing some of the significant visual upgrades coming to NCAA Football 12.

After viewing the video & reading the blog, share your thoughts with The Gaming Tailgate community!

Jean Adams here, Art Director for NCAA Football. I’m very excited to be bringing you the first blog for NCAA Football 12! We’ve been working on some killer visual upgrades and I am glad that we can finally start sharing them with the community. I’m also exited because I think fans of the “The photographic side of NCAA” will really appreciate these visual upgrades. I’m constantly amazed at how your feedback has taken our game and turned it in to a work of art as we continue to make shots look even more amazing in NCAA Football 12. Anyways, let’s get to the good stuff.

The NCAA Football 12 development team thinks it’s important that the game feel fresh and new, straight out of the box. NCAA Football 11 received a much needed visual upgrade in the form of linear lighting and we wanted to build on that momentum in NCAA Football 12. We felt the next step was to implement something that not only made the game look great, but also brought some life in how the game is rendered. It had to be something that immersed players in the college football atmosphere (I’ll explain why I think this is immersive later).

It’s because of this goal that we thought HDR rendering would be a good focal point. Without getting too technical, HDR (High Dynamic Range Rendering) is a way of rendering bright and dark parts of the game while still maintaining a high level of detail. It allows us to preserve contrast without losing the details that make the game look realistic. We also wanted to address how the game looks when being played under shadows. In previous versions, playing in the shadows made gameplay appear dark and muddy, which really killed the quality of our game. This was especially noticeable when playing in huge stadiums like The Swamp or Death Valley, where at certain times of the day shadows cover most of the field making action hard to see. Previously, we had to sacrifice contrast to maintain brightness on the shadow side, but I’m getting way too technical so let me show you the first screenshot of NCAA Football 12.

http://www.thegamingtailgate.com/images/NCAA12/vg_ncaa12_1_576.jpg

While you may think those images look good, screenshots don’t do justice to the impact HDR brings to every aspect of our game, so let’s take a look at HDR in action.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zCtrIadPmo

After seeing that, I hope the photogs out there are salivating at the thought of what screenshots they will be able to take once they get their hands on this year’s game.

The improvements don’t end with HDR and Dynamic Exposure. As you can see in the screenshots, we have added a lot of other eye candy to the game. Dreadlocks, Higher resolution crowds and new gear are featured here, but what stands out the most is the addition of 3-Dimensonal grass and particles. The field surface has looked like a tennis court for way too long, with the addition of 3D grass our game looks more photo realistic and immersive.

This is just a glimpse of some of the visual upgrades for NCAA Football 12. Stay tuned for the next blog revealing more enhancements and innovations for this year’s installment of the NCAA Football franchise.

You mean like, how the game is between two bright-colored teams yet the crowd isn't shining like they've been doused in nuclear paint? :P

Absolutely can see improvements; I thought that NCAA Football 11 was probably the prettiest EA SPORTS title last year from a graphical standpoint, and NCAA Football 12 already looks better.

Yeah after I noticed it the first time I also saw it in some other images. Some of them were very small individual blades of grass coming up. That leads me to believe that field degradation could very well be in this years game and be even more prevalent than in the past.

Unless there has been a change in band location in recent years that the devs know about and we don't; and, of course, assuming that it is even meant to be the band in the first place. Nothing confirmed for me just yet.

I think they tackle and block and move very well in 11. They do not look or feel like stick figures at all imo. Could it be better? Absolutely. From these screen shots, does it "LOOK" like they are moving better? As far as I can tell....Absolutely. Will the lighting help them look like their moving better? ABSO-FRICKIN'-LUTELY! If the game looked the same, we'd all think...."good grief it looks the same, I'm not holding out hope for good game improvements".

The first info from ANY sports game is going to be aesthetic. I don't get it....Why are some people always in the "I don't care about this info, none of it is valuable" mode during first info? Good Lord it LOOKS FRICKIN SPECTACULAR! That's a great start to information about the game. If the gameplay lives up to the look, we're gonna be stuck on the couch in a few months. And NO we don't say that every year....but last year I thought that, and I'm still stuck on the couch playing the game every 2-3 days, just loving my league because the game is really good. I've never ever played a football game this late after the season.

I couldn't agree more with Jayrah. It's the FIRST information, don't think for a second that it's the biggest information. How are they supposed to release screenshots and not explain what visual differences there are? C'mon man!

Furthermore, I find it hilarious that someone who has started, and contributed so much to, threads that are all about photos of the game and his own "obsession" with equipment now says "none of this is valuable". Ram, I would have expected you to be very excited for any visual enhancements. I guess I'm just surprised that you're not.

The visuals took a big leap last year and it seems that they may have again here in 12 and that's always a plus. Yearly titles can't afford to 'look the same as last year,' as is the stereotypical knock for sports titles and that goes not only for in-game graphics but also user interface. I'm interested in seeing what they did in regards to animations after an improvement in 11. That's an area that can probably always receive attention every year.

JBHuskers
03-16-2011, 02:30 PM

The players already look real enough for an animated game. I think its important to let people know if there is really something significant to look forward to.

did you get rid of defenders riding the heels of a receiver? Did you get rid of super DBs?

did you alter the zone defense logic ?

I'm interested in seeing what they did in regards to animations after an improvement in 11. That's an area that can probably always receive attention every year.

Ditto to this bruhtha!! I'm really interested in seeing what NCAA does in their 2nd year with the "locomotion" animation. Truthfully the animations and A.I. logic will probably be the departments I hold most scrutiny upon. Graphics have definitely been re-vamped...with dreads being implemented I can only expect to see other hairstyles emerge in the near future(Clay Matthews long hair, braids, Marion Barber dreads etc.). With these details being payed attention to...I would hope they will slap some mouthpieces in there....Football is a "contact" sport ya know! Oh and even though it hasn't been confirmed just yet....pictures have given slight clues......I'll be super stoked to see field degradation make it onto NCAA 12:drool::drool::drool:

The players already look real enough for an animated game.Maybe, but not everyone agrees on this. The NCAA artists certainly don't. And I saw enough people claiming that NCAA had PS2-level graphics (which is laughable in itself) to think there's a sizable population that thinks that NCAA doesn't look as good as it should.

You're right that everything you named is the "important" questions. They never have answered the big questions in the first blog, and I'd suspect they never will. Too much time between now and release to start with something big like that. Gotta let the excitement grow over time.

Bitchers? Is that a word?

Yep, it's those who bitch. By association with the word, it is heavily implied that what the "bitcher" is bellyaching about is so fucking stupid it is obvious that they will never be satisfied and will find fault with anything. The kind of people who could find fault with fucking Christie Brinkley while eating a Big Mac, and watching the NCAA Tourney. "She's pretty old", "Whoppers are better", "it's not the Super Bowl".

in another thread someone had asked what the next equipment/player look thing would be because dreads were now a non issue.... I said mouthpieces were the next big thing that ppl would bitch about. Subsequently, mouthpieces has been brought up several times on multiple sites since then. And no, I wasn't saying you were bitching in any capacity. Just that it was the next thing and it was my confirmation.

I do some the first time I play at a stadium.

BTW, I just checked. It is Purdue. It's in front of a building that's across a small parking lot from the right corner of the open end zone.

Operation Sports' Christian McLeod (@Bumble14_OS) tweeted tonight that one of his favorite small features from the PS2 days will be returning to NCAA 12.

Just got confirmation of an exciting detail returning in NCAA12 from Ben at EA. Hint: It's my favorite small detail from the PS2 days

Cant go into detail yet, but Everyone should know what I'm talking about in the next set of NCAA12 screens that will be released soon.

Nothing this big...yet.If you guys read my older NCAA pieces I'm sure you can figure it out. There's one detail I've always loved

Assuming it is a visual addition (or will be easily identifed in pics) - any idea on what he may be speaking of?

in one of his articles he has written, he listed "bowl patches, eye black, interactive goal pylons, pregame predictions, coach cut scenes and dreads" as little details from last generation he would like to be added, but didn't specify which was his favorite. the underlined ones are known to be in for 12 already though.

Coach cut scenes would be awesome to see back. But hey, I'm still waiting for return of ELITE 11, chain gang, national game of the week listing, etc.

GOTW is something that I'd also love to see again. In fact I'd like a serious tweak of the way that games are presented to us on the weekly schedule. I don't find myself looking at it anymore for some reason. I used to look at it all the time to see the matchups of the week.

On topic from Chris's post, the only 2 "small" details I can think of is the chain gang (even though it's not in the list above) and the bowl patches (ea released some Bowl game screens early last season with the ESPN presentation blog, so it's a logical choice). I wouldn't think Coach Cut Scenes would be dubbed a "small" detail, nor do I think they would release a "cut scene" screenshot this early. But I can say that if they want to get the community all riled up and overly excited about something, they will

I believe Game of the Week is still there, you just only see it if it's not a Rivalry Game or something else notable.

Excellent point. On last gen I would go game-by-game and look at the little details. I don't even look anymore. The info is actually now too clunky. There are too many screens. Lets go back to to top three players to watch AND injuries.
