So I went to Amazon today and apparently they are going to compete with Netflix. If you are an Amazon Prime member ($79 a year) you get "free" live streaming movies/shows.

I'm not familiar with the other benefits of being a "Prime" member. Anyone here a member and if so is it worth the $79?

I dunno, looking at some of the streaming movies / TV shows they were touting, it makes Netflix's instant stream selection look amazing.

Yeah from what I have read it looks like their initial offering is limited. However, private competition is ALWAYS good for the marketplace. I foresee a "war" between Google/Apple/Netflix/Amazon for this growing business.

Free shipping, mostly. If you use Amazon a good bit it's worth it just for that. Also if you are a Prime member and preorder video games from the site, you have free release-day shipping and it arrives on release day. It's a pretty cool setup.

Naturally the first time I used it the UPS guy left my package on the front porch and my dog totally chewed up my game... so everyone else was hanging out playing the game and I was sitting there with my sore-rear-end dog... :D

I usually get a 3 month trial of Prime every year, so I don't even bother signing up. I wait for the trial, preorder all the shit I want, and I'm set. :D

Depending on your Amazon habits and your lack of patience for delivered products, that could be worth it in itself. Same with getting One-day shipping for $4.

Pretty sure that's it though.

I do, but at the same time, I don't mind waiting for the free shipping, and most major game releases have release day delivery for $0.99 so to me it isn't worth it.

Loved Amazon Prime but they are now charging tax here so I cancelled once my Prime ended since I would not be ordering anything there. Netflix/Prime is pretty much a wash as far as video content so I added Netflix to stream stuff. One thing I will give Amazon is they have some of the best customer service in the business.

More exclusives for Amazon Prime members—we've just finalized a deal with NBC/Universal for Grimm Season 1, Suits Season 1, and Covert Affairs Seasons 1-2 launching today, and two new series: Hannibal coming later this year, and Defiance early next year. Amazon Prime will be the exclusive subscription service for streaming all of these hit shows for the next 4 years.

We're also adding fan favorites like Smash, Eureka, Warehouse 13, and Alphas, and more kids' shows like Curious George and Land Before Time. Prime members are already enjoying The Hunger Games, just added in April, and our brand new Amazon Original Pilots, where your feedback will help us decide which shows we'll make into full seasons just for Prime Instant Video.

A couple reviews from the Prime Files...

TV

Whitechapel (http://www.amazon.com/Episode-1/dp/B003WB4TAG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388579458&sr=8-1&keywords=whitechapel)- I love BBC (the broadcasting company) and this was one of the detective shows I overlooked. Almost done with the third and final season. So far it has pretty much stuck to copycat murders. First season is all about a Jack the Rippper Copycat. Season 2 is about British Mobsters being copycatted. Season 3 so far has covered vampires and HH Holmes, "If you do not know of HH Holmes google it." Not for the squeamish and not a family friendly show. They have no problem showing you some gore and then more gore and more gore. The lead detective has a case of OCD right up there with what I suffer with so all you OCD'ers will apprecate his attention to the detail of our lives.

Parenthood (http://www.amazon.com/Pilot-HD/dp/B003AOVZ2A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1388579504&sr=8-1&keywords=parenthood) - Progressive, liberal, preachy and I absolutely loved it. It's Berkley so you know what to expect going in. The characters just clicked for me as did the family dynamics. If the kid who plays Max has not won some award for his portrayal of someone with Asperger syndrome, someone better darn well soon. Loved all the free seasons so much I paid to catch up to the first half of season five.

Movie

I have been watching a ton of indie horror movies that are just one pile of poop after another. I do recommend "Babysitter Massacre (http://www.amazon.com/Babysitter-Massacre-Erin-R-Ryan/dp/B00FRZSJ6A/ref=sr_1_10?s=instant-video&ie=UTF8&qid=1388579609&sr=1-10)" as it's poop was flung the farthest. How in the heck do people get money for projects like this? Every reviewer on on Amazon must have been part of this flick. One person actually says "Great Looking Women." I can only assume that was one of the women and if you watch it, you will too. It is a slasher, as expected and you will find nothing new. Most of the killing will makes you say, "I remember that in __." If you like your girls beefy and hairy down below, you might actually like this movie. The murders are so freaking random during the film your mind kind gets twisted at the thought that someone actually edited this for a living. Almost 30 minutes is spent with three really average, yet busty girls yapping about nothing as the killer sends them instagrams of their friends being killed, while they comment on how fake they are. All at the same time none of their friends are showing up to their party.

There is more nudity in this than most horror movies that were released in 2013, combined and this is not a good thing. At the same time you have be thinking the guy behind the film has to be tapping all these hefty asses in real life as there is no other explanation as to why they are naked on film. Yet, like any trainwreck you can't look away. Oh, and there is a punk-lesbianish looking chick that is really annoying and you will spend the first hour wondering about her sexuality to add to the plot.

I love Justified but season 4 was easily the worst but even at it's worst it is better than most. Still looking forward to season 5 starting next week.

Some 2013 movies have popped up on Prime. One thing I really hate about Prime is their cataloging of Prime movies, especially in regards to listing the stuff they just released (new or old) and finding something by year. I was going to go on a really long rant about how to fix it but it is easier just to say, "Do what everyone else does." Because they really suck at it and it could not be any worse.

Hanzel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00C7DGRL4/ref=atv_dp_gtv_hd_sib)
Texas Chainsaw (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00CL4BPV6/ref=atv_dp_gtv_hd_sib)

Also check out Betas, it's no "The IT Crowd" but I am really rooting for the short stubbly guy to tap that Asian chick.

What amazes me is the length some people will go to push their shitty indie movies on the world. From the fake Amazon reviews to this guy.

There is no way in the world we were watching the same movie. Just glad to have someone else witness what I saw. I told you there was a lot of nudity in it, just not anything you would want to see without quadruple your states blood alcohol level.

Back to shitty horror movies I think I have seen another flick that could compete for worst horror movie ever made. I knew it "Borderline Cult" (http://www.amazon.com/Borderline-Cult-Elissa-Dowling/dp/B00CLO0W0Q) was going to be bad going in, as it was produced by Ulli Lommel but this was not just bad horror, plot and acting. The camera work for the first 15 minutes made me want to punch something and/or have a seizure. After the apparent LSD overdose wore off he got rid of the"trippy effects" and stuck a camera in 6 places and just spun a wheel to determine what camera(s) would be used in the upcoming scene.

I lasted 30 minutes and really should not have made it that far.

I don't know, that review seems pretty fair. I'm not a huge fan of the genre, but the reviewer obviously is. I mean, I question his judgement for sure. The first scene he shows in the review is probably one of the worst scenes in the movie. The actress that plays the punk girl is, AT BEST, mediocre but the other girl in that scene... wow, has she ever acted before? I mean, ever? As if her delivery weren't bad enough, how did the shot of her emotionless face at the end of that scene make it in the film?

Most of the girls are real life average, which makes them well below average by movie/internet standards. But hey, I like big tits and those girls got 'em and show 'em. The bigger girl that tries to seduce the killer... uh, I could have done without that, but I'll give the director credit for making a bold choice instead of being cynical and assuming that he had run out of average girls that were willing to get naked.

I did really like the boiling water bit and especially the double achilles cut. The ending was executed quite poorly, with the back and forth between the lead girl and the punk girl going much too long, but I like that the punk girl was unable to save her friend.

I'd still much rather watch a terrible 75 minute movie than a mediocre 22 minute sitcom/dramedy.

I'd still much rather watch a terrible 75 minute movie than a mediocre 22 minute sitcom/dramedy.

It depends on my mood. I only have a few 30 minute comedies that I watch religiously (Big Bang Theory, New Girl and Workoholics). For me nothing is better than a multi-season one hour length TV shows, especially crime/drama and right now anything British. Movies are just a quick fix, I need a good hourly (or an many cases the British episodes can go, an hour and a half each). I need character development and someone to root for/against. This is why Downton Abby is damn good.

Amazon Mulling ‘Prime’ Price Hike - Cost could increase from $20 to $40 (http://business.time.com/2014/01/31/amazon-prime-price-hike/)

Amazon announced Thursday that it might increase the cost of Amazon Prime subscriptions, as it released lackluster quarterly earnings.

During a conference call with investors, the company said Prime subscription, which offer members receive free two-day shipping and access to Amazon’s instant video service and Kindle “lending library,” could increase from $20 to $40 to cover rising fuel and shipping costs, CNBC reports.

Prime has been a key part of Amazon’s strategy to get consumers to buy more and more products through the Web retailing giant. Over 1 million people signed up for the service in the third week of December alone, CNBC reports, though the company has not disclosed how many people actively use the service.

“It’s a good time to be an Amazon customer,” CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement. “You can now read your Kindle gate-to-gate, get instant on-device tech support via our revolutionary Mayday button, and have packages delivered to your door even on Sundays. In just the last weeks, Forrester, YouGov, and ForeSee have all ranked Amazon #1—and we believe we’re just scratching the surface of what world-class customer service can be.”

The company’s fourth quarter earnings were lower than expected, however. Amazon reported earnings of 51 cents per share, while expected earnings were about 66 cents per share.

Amazon.com Inc plans to hike the annual fee for its popular Prime service by 25 percent to $99 starting next week (http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/sns-rt-us-amazon-prime-20140313,0,6262795.story), a move announced on Thursday that risks losing customers for a feature that has helped drive its business.

The increase comes about six weeks after Amazon warned that it may raise prices by as much as $40 to offset rising fuel and shipping costs. Prime, which offers unlimited two-day shipping among other perks, had cost $79 since its introduction in 2005.

Later on Thursday, Amazon rival ShopRunner offered a free one-year membership to its own $79-a-year service to disgruntled Prime users who have not renewed their subscription at the higher rate. ShopRunner partners with brick-and-mortar retailers like Nieman Marcus and offers unlimited two-day shipping.

The $20 hike for Prime is unlikely to spur users to drop the service en masse, analysts said. But it may temper Amazon's ability to attract new customers to Prime, seen as instrumental to boosting purchases of goods and digital media.

However, you can still get a Prime membership for $79:

Amazon is raising the price of Amazon Prime by $20 per year, up to $99. Even at the new price, it's still the best deal in tech, but non-members can lock in a year of the service at $79 if you sign up now.

Update: Turns out there is a way to get this price as a current subscriber, but it's a little hacky. Just disable auto-renew on your account, purchase a gift subscription here (https://www.amazon.com/gp/prime/pipeline/prime_gifting_landing/?ie=UTF8&ascsubtag=%5Breferrer%7Ct.co%5Btype%7Clink%5BpostI d%7C1543154175%5BauthorId%7C5727177402741770316&camp=1789&creative=390957&linkCode=ur2&tag=thegamtai-20), and schedule it to send to yourself on the day your current subscription lapses. http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20140423005395/en/Amazon-HBO-Ink-Exclusive-Multi-Year-Deal-Bring#.U1fFZVcq1qJ

Amazon.com, Inc. today announced a content licensing agreement with HBO, making Prime Instant Video the exclusive online-only subscription home for select HBO programming. The collection includes award-winning shows such as The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, The Wire, Big Love, Deadwood, Eastbound & Down, Family Tree, Enlightened, Treme, early seasons of Boardwalk Empire and True Blood, as well as mini-series like Band of Brothers, John Adams and more. Previous seasons of other HBO shows, such as Girls, The Newsroom and Veep will become available over the course of the multi-year agreement, approximately three years after airing on HBO. The first wave of content will arrive on Prime Instant Video May 21. This is the first time that HBO programming has been licensed to an online-only subscription streaming service. This programming will remain on all HBO platforms.

That will be a big plus to Amazon Prime. I was shocked to see this actually happening with either Prime or Netflix. HBO has to be getting some major $ for this deal.

Sounds like it's included.

“HBO has produced some of the most groundbreaking, beloved and award-winning shows in television history, with more than 115 Emmys amongst the assortment of shows coming to Prime members next month,” said Brad Beale, Director of Content Acquisition for Amazon. “HBO original content is some of the most-popular across Amazon Instant Video—our customers love watching these shows. Now Prime members can enjoy a collection of great HBO shows on an unlimited basis, at no additional cost to their Prime membership.”

Very if you watch a lot of network shows and want to cut cable. Not so much for cable shows.Hulu Plus is good for cable shows if you're using the computer. There are quite a few shows that they can stream on the PC but not other devices. At least quite a few that I watch fall under that.

Hulu Plus has been good for us because we were hooking up my PC to the TV to stream ABC.com and similar. So it's nice to just use it through the Roku now.

As Austin said, if it came to it, it would be the first I'd cut.

Amazon Prime just added another really good deal. They have monthly subscriptions to all of Showtime and Starz content. $8.99 a mo. for each and they have a few other genre related subs that are cheaper. The great deal is they all have a 7 day trial. So if you are just looking to catch up on one show, it's free. I am going with Showtime for a month to catch up on Homeland, Masters of Sex and watch a couple of show like Ray Donovan that I have not seen. Cancel at the end of the month and do the same thing with Starz, which has a couple of shows I wanted to see but were not available outside of purchasing a season.

Is Prime $99 US? It's $75 or $79C over here but doesn't have the same number of perks. We don't get amazon video at all and the Kindle family sharing isn't an option either which is a bummer for me personally. But the 20% off new video games (and within two weeks of release) with release day shipping is a very good thing and I am using it for a year. No minimum shipping fee is nice too, especially after its $35 in Canada. Haven't really used that yet though. But the video game discount is the number one reason for me with the games my family gets.

I re-upped with Amazon Prime but am not sure if I made the right call. The problem is my subscription date is mid November. We do a lot of online shopping and that's when Prime is nice to have for quick shipping and no minimum.

This year I have taken advantage of it but the problem is the rest of the year I don't use it.

We now have 3 Amazon Echos and I’m considering the Spot when it comes out on Dec. 19th. We have some smartplugs for a few things in the house. Having a smart home is more awesome than I anticipated.

Interesting. What exactly is the appeal?

It’s like having remote controls for everything connected except you don’t need a physical controller. Just your voice. For instance, my Christmas tree is in the office in front of the window. I don’t need to walk in there to turn it on or off. I can just say, “Alexa, turn on the Christmas tree” (from any room where we have an Echo), and it’ll turn on.

The bedroom Echo is the alarm. I set it simply by saying, “Alexa, set an alarm for 5 am on weekdays.” When it goes off in the morning, I say, “Alexa, stop.” Then I say, “Alexa, Good morning.” After she hears that, she gives me the weather forecast, the top news stories, and current traffic for my work commute. It really is cool when you set it up.

We have Prime which comes with a basic level of Amazon music. My wife has the subscription service added on to have access to far more music and she loves just asking for a specific song that she wants to hear and having it played.

So is this basically the same as Google Home or is it a different type of service altogether?

Essentially the same thing, just through Amazon (like Zunes and iPods). Google Home is better at research questions but I rarely (if ever) ask Alexa for answers. I use it for home automation and music.

I just got the Dot, an Anker Bluetooth speaker and a couple smart plugs to mess around with. I really like it. In the Kasa app (company that made the smart plugs I have) I can turn stuff on or off from anywhere with my phone. I really like that ability.

One of my smartplugs is a Kasa plug and yeah, I like being able to do that too.
