For anyone that hasn't played Portal 1, it's an excellent First Person Platformer-Puzzler. Portal 2 looks like it comes from the same formula but you can bet Valve blows away the original.

Along those lines comes news today...

Portal's Creators Want To Give You Free Games (http://kotaku.com/5736343/portals-creators-are-handing-out-free-games)

If you play Portal 2 on PS3, you can play with people on a PC. Neat! And to make sure as many people as possible are doing just that, the PS3 version of the game will include the PC version.

All players have to do once they get the game is link their PlayStation Network and Steam accounts. Once that's done, they'll have a Steam Play (so, PC and/or Mac) version of the game ready to download in their library list.

This cross-platform play even extends to giving PS3 users the ability to chat to PC gamers, and vice-versa. Oh, and PS3 users can even save their game in the Steam Cloud, meaning Valve has them tucked away in their servers in case something ever goes horribly wrong with your PS3.

That's a whole lot of "firsts" for both Steam, the PC multiplayer service of choice, and Sony's PlayStation Network. Not to mention a free copy of the game you can, for example, take with you on a laptop when you're not on your couch with the PS3.

And if all this works, and works well, let us welcome out glorious cross-platform future with open arms!

That's awesome news for me... I was trying to decide between picking it up on PS3 or PC but this makes it an easy choice!

Pretty sweet how they're giving you a Steam code with a PS3 copy.

Definitely... that's why I love Valve. They're certainly gamer friendly.

As well, here's a video from IGN to check out, just came out a few days ago.

I need to finish the first Portal, I'm about half way through it, and just hadn't picked it up in forever. The Orange Box was a sweet collection of games though.

I read about that earlier. Awesome news. Pretty sure that's a direct jab at Microsoft, but oh well, I'll take the extra support for sure. <3 Valve.

Anyone else picking this up? I've got it pre-ordered from Amazon, and right now they're offering $5 off plus $20 Amazon credit:
Portal 2 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003O6E3C8/ref=as_li_qf_sp_asin_tl?ie=UTF8&tag=thegamtai-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B003O6E3C8)

As well, for anyone not aware, if you purchase the PS3 version, not only can you play cross-platform with PC gamers, but as well you get a free downloadable version from Steam so you're basically getting two separate copies of the game for the price of one. Not sure if you'd be able to give your PC copy to someone else or not but even if not, pretty cool.

Also, if you played the first and want to find out what's been going on since the first one completed, Valve is putting out a web-comic:

Oh... and as always, I love when Valve puts their own ads/videos together

11 Metacritic reviews so far giving it a 96 (http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/portal-2/critic-reviews)

It sounds like if you liked Portal 1, you'll like Portal 2 even more. It's more of the same but with some new elements, new/entertaining dialogue, etc. It arrives from Amazon today... ordered the PS3 version but will likely start out on the PC version.

From IGN:

Lasting Appeal
Though play time will vary, expect the single-player and co-op to take roughly 10 – 12 hours. Afterward, unless you want to relive the story, there isn't a huge incentive to replay.

10-12 hours is longer than I thought it would be, so that's nice.

Fairly lengthy (AND GOOD) review from Rock, Paper, Shotgun (http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/04/19/review-portal-2/)

I heard that user reviews are spam trashing it....so ignore them.

Most seem to be mad about Day 1 DLC but the thing is that it isn't true DLC in the fact that it's new story modes or anything like that. It's 100% dress-up and new dances from what I've read. Far from something that you'd miss if you didn't purchase it.

Got an e-mail that said my delivery might be delayed, but I just checked UPS and it's out for delivery so it appears I'm good for it being delivered today.

Piece of cake as Joystiq shows you how to redeem your Steam code from your PS3 copy.

The cool shit with Portal 2 just keeps coming left and right....

I'll be quite surprised if the DLC is completely free on 360... Valve always loves to give free DLC on PC but due to limitations from MS, they've had to charge in the past (I think if it has trophies, it has to cost money). This is Valve's first true game on the PS3 so it will be interesting to see how they handle that.

From the article:

Yup, the first DLC pack is not going to cost you a thing regardless of your system of choice: PC, Mac, 360 and/or PS3.

Has anybody seen, with actual proof, of the ability to give the free PC copy to one Steam account, while using the PS3 copy on another, separate account? I've seen different statements on that, none more than theoretical.

I don't believe you can. I bought the PS3 version to get both copies. To activate the Steam copy, you have to first "activate" your steam account on the PS3, then use the activation code on Steam. So... maybe if the PS3 version played offline, then the PC version could sign into Steam and play. Either way though, I don't think you'll be able to have both copies playing at the same time.

Unless of course Valve just opened it up due to the PSN issues.
