The biggest change to the game comes with the addition of Pure Analog Control. That's right, buttons are about as hip these days as players wearing stirrups, so Sony has finally changed the control scheme for hitting, pitching, and throwing to be all analog based (although if you want to play old school and use buttons, you can still find last year's controls in the options menu).

"This is the feature everyone has wanted in our game for years, but we didn't want to do it until we could do it right," says longtime "MLB" producer Chris Gill as he sits down to demo the game for me inside Sony's San Diego studio. "People have been asking for a new way to play the game, and now everything you do, whether you're swinging the bat, throwing to first, or pitching the ball, it's all done with the right analog stick."

What this means is for hitting, gamers pull back on the stick to start the batter's stride, then push forward to swing the bat. This is all about timing as if you start your stride too early, pause, then swing, your stride will be off and you'll lose power. Start your stride too late, and you're going to be behind on the ball when you finally swing. It takes a few innings to get used to, but by my second game, I hit a few homers and felt comfortable enough to start really enjoying the new approach.

On top of the new control scheme, "MLB 11: The Show" also features a fun new co-op mode that can be played both online and offline. Co-op can be 1 vs. 2, 2 vs. 2, or even 2 vs. CPU, with online games using up to two consoles max, meaning if it's a four-player game, two players can be on one console playing against two players on another console. The game then enables each team's captain to assign duties for each showdown. For example, if I'm playing with a friend, I can choose to pitch every other inning and control the infield while he controls the outfield or I can change things up and have him pitch while I control all the fielding. When we're up to bat, we can alternate spots in the order or even choose to just have one player hit and one player pitch. There are so many options to choose from, you can really play this mode however you desire.

Think that's all that's been added to the game? Think again as the exhaustive list of improvements made to the "MLB: The Show" franchise also includes Move support for the game's home run derby mode, 3-D gameplay (all you need is a 3-D TV and glasses), and a camera editor that enables you to customize any pitching or batting camera to your own personal specifications. There are even the exact broadcast views for every MLB team so you can play the game as your favorite team from the exact same viewpoint you watch them play for real. Amazing.

Other highlights include Eric Karros joining the booth alongside Matt Vasgersian and Dave Campbell, completely redesigned stadium-specific jumbotrons, and dynamic rain and cloud coverage that not only takes into account stadium location, but the wet field will now affect the on-field results. There's even a new fake throw system that enables fielders to fake like they're throwing the ball to a certain base in hopes of catching an aggressive runner on another base off guard (simply press throw twice to pull off the fake).

For online sports fans, the team at Sony admits to past trouble when it comes to playing their game over the PlayStation Network, but say they are doing everything in their power to ensure a better, smoother, and lag-free experience for "MLB 11." "We've been working a lot on online," adds senior producer Jason Villa, "and right now with our testing it's as close to offline play as it gets. We're going to continue to improve the stability as much as we can. Some people will tell us they have great connections, others don't, and it's hard to determine what the cause is. You never really know until you ship and get out on the shelves, but believe me, we're doing our best to make sure it's as good as we can possibly get it."

Other online improvements include flexible divisions in leagues (2, 4, or 6), custom roster support for league play, and the ability for commissioners to set AI controlled teams so that you can play in a league with 30 teams even if you only have a handful of human players. Commissioners also have the new ability to simulate or reset games to help advance the league. In addition, there's a new XP system that will grant XP points whether gamers win or lose online. The winner will now get 75% while the loser gets 25% of the points, and Sony hopes this alleviates the problem of competitors simply pulling the plug on online games once they fall behind. Winning percentage will also play a factor in your skill rank and help determine whether you're a rookie, veteran, or legend, not just your overall XP value (so don't automatically assume someone with 5,000 points is brilliant at the game, look at their win percentage).

Meh I don't like the analog stick hitting aspect. I might not actually pick this title up for the first time in 3 years.

I liked it on NCAA Baseball.....but I just don't enjoy playing baseball games like I used to.

Yeah I think I am over buying this only to play half a season before I am through with it. I might re pick up 10 once this comes out though. I can never play an entire season just too damn long, plus even if I do I have NEVER played more than 1.5 seasons.

Baseball games always seem fun to me and while I realize The Show is great, I don't get my money's worth from baseball games. On the original Ken Griffey baseball I played 3.5 full seasons or so, and then I had another SNES baseball game that I played seasons on, I forget the name. Part of my problem now is that I am not a huge baseball fan like I was back then plus The Show may almost be too hardcore in some ways. That and my batting eye is terrible. :D

What do you guys think of the co-op mode they mentioned? I'm not sure how well it will go over when it's only two consoles max, whereas Madden OTP allows six consoles. If it doesn't have some sort of stat tracking or league for their co-op, it might struggle to do as well as Madden OTP and that was hurt by the lack of stat tracking, etc. IMO.

I am NOT (nor will I EVER) be interested in any form of a co-op mode. IMHO, the reason The Show didnt do multi-consoles is b/c they have had some serious connection issues in a game where timing is everything. I haven't played The Show much online this year but I did at 1st and the connections were horrible for me making online play almost unplayable.

This series has been unbelieveable but you are right for some reason it doesn't get the play it should for me. The season is a GRIND (just like real life) and I lose interest by the time I hit the all-star break and NCAA and Madden come out.

I love the addition of analog controls and customizable camera angles. I passed on the Show 10 because it just felt stale and I loved the analog controls of MLB 2K10 despite some serious flaws the game had. It was still fun. Probably going back to the Show 11 this year. CLW - analog controls are all optional.

I read that the analog stuff was optional. #1 I doubt it will be for online play unless you can find "unranked" games so that pretty much eliminates the random online play. #2 if the analog controls is the big thing this yr (and im sure it is) I'd be paying $60 for a roster update. IMHO, thats just not worth the $60 for a game I probably won't even finish a full season of.

Not really excited about the co-op, just pumped that you can actually do an online franchise and auto-fill the other teams with the AI. THANK YOU!

Baseball has one big advantage over football as it's so much easier to input cpu AI. Baseball only has 9 fielders and most of the time the play only involves a couple of them with obvious programming. I've never played baseball online but do remember playing against my brothers at home. I would think playing the cpu is more fun than playing online as the cpu plays very sim and smart. With the cpu's football AI still being relatively poor I can see why guys love OD and online play but I'm not sure how popular online franchises are for baseball.

IMHO, MLB games just don't lend themselves to online dynasty formats. The season is so...... damn long. IF you were to do a "sim" franchise and had a 24 hour deadline to play a game you MIGHT get through 2 seasons. I suppose there are hardcore The Show forums out there just like we hvae here for NCAA but even here I'm generally unaware of anyone advancing every 24 hours with a 12 team OD.

In online baseball leagues, my experience has been that people complain and get upset about style of play way more than you see in NCAA/Madden leagues. People pitch too much outside, too aggressive on the bathpaths, difficulty getting schedules to match up vs. humans, etc. You can have some really great times playing baseball online, but also some terrible experiences.

Users just throw balls all day long trying to get you to chase and it normally works. Playing CPU a lot more fun IMO than playing my brother.

The MLB: The Show Community manager Russell Ramone posted this on OS (http://www.operationsports.com/news/466190/mlb-11-the-show-franchise-trade-and-off-season-logic-has-been-massively-improved/):

This is a very very late addition/change to MLB 11 The Show. Kolbe and Jeff Ulman, one of our senior AI programmers, went into the cave this past weekend and re-wrote a massive amount of code for trades and off-season logic for franchise mode.

The more I think about it the more I realize I just "have" to buy this game. I'll just play offline and use the "classic" controls. I presume "classic" throwing/hitting/baserunning/etc... is an option?

You can mix and match any control scheme. Buttons for fielding, analog for pitching, analog for hitting.. whatever you like. Old of the old and new controls are available and are independent of all 3 areas.

I know baseball is different from football and basketball but IMHO NOONE has come close to producing as quality of a simulation sports title as The Show has done. Yes there are a few flaws but this series has become the standard bearer of what EA/2K SHOULD be doing w their titles.

Yeah a game such as baseball that is based on timing cannot have any lag issues and Sony has definitely struggled in that department.

From Pasta (http://www.pastapadre.com/2011/02/07/mlb-11-the-show-fact-sheet):

SCEA has released the full fact sheet for MLB 11: The Show. As usual the list of features is extensive as the document includes not just what has been added to the MLB 11 but also those that have been previously established in the series. Continue on to check out all the details and leave your thoughts in the comments!

NEW FEATURES:

Pure Analog Control System (PS3) – The long awaited Pure Analog Controls for The Show have arrived, including analog controls for hitting, pitching, and throwing. Pure Hitting allows you to stride and swing using the R-stick adding a new dynamic to timing. Pure Pitching functionality is similar to the Pitch Meter when setting strength and location, but uses the R-stick requiring a bit more concentration when timing your release point. Pure Throwing uses the R-stick to make throws when on defense. When fielding the ball, simply point the stick in the direction of the base you’d like to throw towards. You can also control how hard you throw the ball by how long you hold the R-stick in the desired direction—the longer you hold it in that direction, the harder the ball will be thrown. This also allows for fake throws to keep runners honest.

Co-Op Mode (Online & Offline) (PS3) – Play co-op 1 vs. 2, 2 vs. 2, or 2 vs. CPU, offline or online! In two-player Co-op mode, players are given different selectable duty sharing options. Once the user is at the selection screen, they will be able to choose up to four-player involvement with a maximum of two per team. Online Co-op mode allows a maximum of two consoles and up to four players (two per team) to play a head-to-head online game. The PlayStation®Network (PSN) account used for online game stats and record is the user logged into the XMB and PSN on each console. Users can also play an unranked co-op game with two players on two different consoles or on the same team versus the CPU.

3D Experience (PS3) – MLB 11 The Show features the most advanced stereoscopic 3D technology, available in all gameplay modes.

PlayStation®Move Support (PS3) – Swing for the fences with your PlayStation Move motion controller in MLB 11 The Show, available in Home Run Derby® only.

Challenge of the Week (PS3) – Challenge of the Week is a quick, fast paced, 2-3 minute, one-player, online experience, with leader boards and prizes awarded in three tiers. There will be one challenge a week and multiple monthly challenges, summing up the points awarded in the four weekly challenges and two semi-annual grand prizes. Each PSN user will get one free try a week, with each subsequent try having a small fee associated with it—think arcade machine. Prizes include authentic MLB gear signed by MLB players, like Joe Mauer, as well as ticket packages and Sony electronics.

Road to The Show 5.0 (PS3) – The fifth generation of Road to The Show brings a new interactive slider set to the Create Player process, new training modes triggered by the Player Performance Evaluator, Minor League substitution logic improvements, advancement system improvements that now compare your stats versus your competition in the organization, and the new No Assist Fielding option to make the fielding experience even more realistic. With No Assist Fielding, if you don’t react, the game won’t do it for you! A new set of base running controls have been added, along with improvements to the existing base running system. Road to The Show also boasts improved camera angles and a full audio upgrade.

Eric Karros Joins The Broadcast Booth (PS3) – MLB 11 The Show welcomes the 1992 National League Rookie of the Year and former Los Angeles Dodger first baseman, Eric Karros, to the three-man broadcast booth joining veterans Matt Vasgersian and Dave Campbell. Karros currently works as an MLB color commentator on the FOX network, as well as KCAL-TV in Los Angeles, where he is part of the pre-game show for Dodger games.

Camera Editor (PS3) – MLB 11 The Show is pleased to introduce the Camera Editor, a brand new feature giving players the ability to customize any pitching or batting camera to your own personal specifications. You can not only view the action your own way by customizing the camera’s angle and zoom, but you can modify each pitch meter’s placement and size as well! Use over 35 presets, including all 30 MLB home broadcast views as your starting points for creating your perfect cameras.

Stadium Specific Broadcast Cameras (PS3) – Want to pitch or hit from the same camera perspective you’re used to seeing while watching your favorite team play on TV? MLB 11 The Show now offers the ability to do just that. All 30 MLB teams have their home broadcast view available for batting and pitching. Use broadcast cameras specific to each stadium you play in or build a custom camera similar to your favorite team’s broadcast camera and take it on the road—it’s all up to you!

Weather Elements and Stadium Ambiance (PS3) – MLB 11 The Show continues to bring the most true-to-life experience now including weather elements in the form of rain and dynamic cloud coverage. The rain element takes into account stadium location and can affect the on-field action and play results. Additionally, different cloud variations are included—grey, partly cloudy, or complete cloud coverage, as well as the dusk to darkness aspect of the sky. There is also new night cloud coverage and majestic sunsets. Complementing stadium ambiance are newly designed fireworks, playing after the home team hits a Home Run or wins the game.

Stadium Specific Jumbotrons – Completely redesigned, stadium specific jumbotrons are now available in MLB 11 The Show. They reflect the actual look and feel of all real-life ballpark jumbotron displays. Each stadium’s jumbotron board and out of town scoreboard is displayed exactly as seen in each MLB stadium.

Player Performance Evaluator (PS3) – The Player Performance Evaluator is an enhanced mechanism for providing point bonus opportunities for Road to The Show players, similar to the previously used in-game dynamic goals, but with an emphasis on making each at bat, or batter faced, a critical point earning opportunity. A player’s hitting and/or pitching performance is evaluated on an at-bat by at-bat basis to determine the amount of training points awarded.

User Settings (with ADVA) (PS3) – The new User Settings system has been created for MLB 11 The Show to provide a streamlined options interface that houses all game options. The system consists of four preset configurations geared towards various user experiences with the ability to create custom configurations from any of the presets. The presets are Beginner, Experienced, Expert, and A.D.V.A. The Association for Disabled Virtual Athletes (ADVA) is the first video game based online competitive sports organization designed specifically for handicapped individuals, making it possible for them to participate in the sports they love, within an environment that fits their needs. MLB 11 The Show offers a default settings option that makes the game more playable and accessible to those with disabilities. The default settings were selected based on consultation by the organization. There is also a new Online User Setting that allows you to set your gameplay style, separate from your opponent. Settings include, pitching interface, hitting interface, cameras, and more.

Online League Upgrade (PS3) – Building on the foundation of the current online system, MLB 11 The Show offers improved create league functionality with flexible divisions, a new schedule creator, and the ability to use a custom roster for your league. Commissioners can also set Artificial Intelligence (A.I.) controlled teams allowing for more flexibility and have an opportunity to reset or simulate games. There is also a new commissioner role management screen allowing users to provide responsibilities to other members of your league, like resolving games, resetting games, simulating games, and more.

The Show XP System (PS3) – The new online scoring system unifies your online gaming experience by making all ways to play games (league and exhibition) count towards your MLB status. Users will now gain XP status regardless of whether they win or lose. A win renders more points to the winner, but the user on the losing end will still receive 25% of the points that the game is worth. Time invested will also play a factor. No longer will you receive full points for only completing a two inning game.

Player Vault – Now users can upload a single player, outside of a full roster, for others in the The Show community to download, use, and rate.

Tutorial Movies (PS3) – The tutorial movies showcase and explain the new controls for five of The Show’s latest features—Pure Hitting, Pure Pitching, Pure Throwing, the Camera Editor, and the Fake Throw System. They can be viewed in the frontend menus or the in-game pause menu.

In-Game Bottom Ticker – Keep tabs on all the action during your Major League season with the addition of The Show’s new in-game bottom ticker. You’ll now get score updates of games in progress, pitching matchups for games yet to start that day, and final score results highlighting win/loss/save info and notable offensive performances—all recreated just as you would see at the bottom of your screen in real-life. Additionally, you’ll be able to set the ticker to display Friend Updates, so you can keep up with what your friends are up to in The Show.

New Presentations – The Show continues to add to an already expansive presentation base by adding more ways to accurately mirror real-life broadcasts. This year, watch for new pitch-by-pitch sequences that look back at, say, all seven pitches in an at-bat that led to a walk, or a montage of a pitcher’s last six strikeouts.

Retooled Fielder Ratings – Improved fielder ratings make defensive substitutions play an even larger role within gameplay. Leave your designated hitter (DH) in the outfield and risk having his shaky glove in the outfield! This year you’ll see an even larger separation in performance by Gold Glovers versus those players less known for their fielding prowess.

CORE FRANCHISE FEATURES:

MLB® All-Star Break (includes Home Run Derby® and MLB® All-Star Futures Game™) (PS3) –Fully implemented in our season modes and available as a stand-alone mode, Home Run Derby follows the MLB rules and flow. The MLB® All-Star Futures Game™ will also be available within season modes in its correct timeframe (just before the Home Run Derby). See if your Road to The Show player is invited to either the Home Run Derby or the Futures Game!

Catcher Calling the Game (PS3) – The catcher will give a sequence of signs and users will have the ability to change their indicator. Specifically for Road to The Show, the feature will allow a catcher to calling the game. This feature will give a new level of control to the catcher where he will have responsibility to select pitches and position himself to block balls that are in the dirt or wild.

User Controlled Pick-Offs (PS3) – Want to surprise a base runner with a quick move or lull him to sleep? The pick-off mechanism allows users to choose from a quick, casual, or deceptive pick-off type. Roster Vault – The Roster Vault gives users the ability to create their perfect roster offline by adjusting player attributes, appearance, accessories, etc. Users can then save this roster to their memory card or PS3 hard drive and then upload online to share with others allowing The Show community to share and judge any roster.

Slider Vault – Gives users the ability to create their perfect game settings offline by adjusting game sliders. Gamers can then save these adjustments to memory and, when online, upload to for other users to try and let the online community be the judge on finding the perfect game.

Unrivaled Player Creator – An infinite amount of options for creating players including everything right down to your own face with EyeToy® (PS2 only). But it doesn’t stop there. You can also adjust your personal rituals, swings—even emotions as you create mini-you.

MLB® Player Motion Captures – Authentically captured motions from dozens of professional athletes including Joe Mauer, Dustin Pedroia, David Wright, Ryan Howard, and more. This is on top of the hundreds of accurate personalized pitching deliveries and batting stances.

Umpire Personalities – Each umpire will have his own definition of the strike zone, and it’s up to the gamer to figure out if the umpire is calling the zone high, low, or giving the corners.

As I read through this, I think every sports game should have such a detailed summary of features. Too many games rely on the hardcore audience to supply the feature lists, even close to release.

New blog on realism & ambiance (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/02/10/mlb-11-the-show-stadium-realism-and-ambiance/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mlb_11_the_show_021011).

MLB 11 The Show: Stadium Realism and Ambiance

With MLB 11 The Show, we’ve built upon our improvements to the realism by including stadium-specific jumbotrons, true-to-life out-of-town scoreboards, and weather effects such as rain and new improved skies and cloud coverage. These realistic enhancements to the game help make MLB 11 The Show not only look like the real thing, but they truly give you the feeling that you are at a live game. Here’s a video to show you what I mean (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/02/10/mlb-11-the-show-stadium-realism-and-ambiance/?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=mlb_11_the_show_021011)…

New to this year’s version of The Show is having real and fully functional stadium specific jumbotrons and out of town scoreboards. What this means is that each MLB jumbotron was duplicated by our artists to authentic and look exactly like the real thing. The jumbotrons now show the team’s lineups, statistics, and full video boards, and as you can see by the attention to detail they do they look amazing! Now you check out your favorite team’s jumbotron and all of its bells and whistles. This accuracy gives you the feeling that you are watching a real-life baseball game, it’s that detailed!

Last year we added quite a bit to our skies, stadium shadows, and night time look, but this year we wanted to make MLB 11 The Show even more dynamic so we set out to add rain and fog. The rain varies over the course of the game, and has a definite visual impact on the field. You will see the stadium lights come on in overcast days, and weather is tuned based on region and time of year. In MLB 11 night skies received a major facelift and now vary from late afternoon, to warm sunsets with sunlit clouds, to cool twilight colors, and finally full night time affects. The time of day that the sun sets is now calculated based on the latitude and longitude of the stadium, the month, date, and year, and the time zone, so that your season game’s look and feel reflect the real world.

Adding stadium specific jumbotrons and out of town scoreboards was an important request by our community and fans, so we’re very happy that we were able to accomplish these new features. Our goal is always to make your favorite team, stadium, or fans look, feel, and sound just like the real thing and it’s definitely reflected in MLB 11 The Show. We appreciate your feedback and listen to our fans, as we try to make the best game possible year after year. Thanks for your continued support, we hope you enjoy MLB 11 The Show when it arrives on March 8, 2011. Be sure to visit us at www.TheShowNation.com.

Welcome to The Show!

I wasn't very impressed by the demo and this pretty much cements the idea that I won't be getting the Show 11. I only played 1.5 games before I quit.

I didn't think the graphics looked that good. When you watch the 2K11 and Show 11 videos it appears the Show looks a TON better. But the demo didn't look that great and I think it's mainly because they chose to do the game with an overcast sky. Baseball games look a lot better in the pure sun because of the shadows and the resulting lighting effects. I think they screwed it up because the game just didn't look so hot in the partial shade. I popped in 2K10 and played a game with SF at home against Texas and while I still like the player models of the Show better (and the faces are a lot better too), I thought 2K10 looked better overall. The crowds look good, the colours are bright and the lighting was great. People are calling 2K11 a PS2 version of a baseball game but that's a little nuts. Either way not that big a deal and I don't think graphics will be the difference between the two games. The animations for 2K10 were pretty rough in areas while the Show is a lot more polished in this area.

I think the audio sounded a little poor for the Show 11 demo. The crowd didn't sound that great and I miss the organ from 2K10. Could be a demo/audio restriction though. Karros replaces Rex but I'm one of the few that liked Rex. The commentary isn't as good as 2K.

Camera angles - I wish the fielding camera was more dynamic. I'd like to see Medium on the grounders and line drives and High on the outfield popups. You can't see enough of the ball on deep flies. I was disappointed that we couldn't use the camera editor since I didn't like any of the default camera angles. I like the straight behind the pitcher view (like Minnesota, Pitcher1 in 2K10 with 3,1,10 settings at the moment) and I couldn't use it. I like the zoomed out default camera in 2K10 and I couldn't create that in the demo either. I don't think this will be an issue for retail.

Analog pitching - not bad but I prefer gesture pitching without a doubt. I think the Show may have erred in having the missed locations be dependent on the stick. I think it should be more random than it is. I was pitching on All-Star and I found there were WAY too many passed balls imo. Obviously this is a new system to me but I felt it was too punishing on All-Star with a miss = passed ball/dirt pitch. I cranked the consistency all the way up and it was a lot better. One nice thing was that your sliders and settings carry over if you restart the game. Overall this was fun but gesture pitching is where it's at for me.

Analog batting - this was too tough for me. I wish you could use analog batting without having to push side to side. I might get by with side to side if the pitch speed was slower but it is just way too fast. Not only do I have to pull back and up at just the right moment, I also have to choose the side of the plate to swing at a ball that is racing in at me. I lowered the pitch speed to 0 and still found it too frustrating. How do the devs expect kids to be successful with the fast pitch speeds? This has always been an issue for me and not for too many hardcore fans but I just don't understand why they don't make the slider more responsive. I doubt I would ever be able to use the analog batting because I would never walk and just get frustrated. I'm completely at the mercy of the pitcher throwing me stuff near the zone. If you can handle the pitch speed I think this could be really fun but if you find the pitch speed too fast you are screwed.

Analog fielding - I didn't really have any problems here on Veteran. I threw some balls in the dirt but I didn't mind that. I don't know how to hit the cutoff anymore though. The game still has too many animations kick in at poor times. Maybe I didn't preload but a couple times my SS came up with a lazy animation on the throw to first and one time the guy beat my throw. Is that me or the game? Not sure but it was annoying.

This is still the Show. If you liked last year's game I'm sure you will like this year's game. I'm not sure how much of the actual gameplay has changed but the feel will be familiar. I think the analog controls will be a nice change for some people but I'm a 2K guy now. I'm sure some of you Show guys won't be too happy with 2K11. The two games certainly have a different feel so hopefully everyone can be happy this year.

I downloaded the demo last night but haven't gotten around to playing it yet. From what I can recall the graphics/sound on retail are almost always better than in a demo.

I LOVE The Show. The problem for me is just that while it provides a fun/sim experience for some unknown reason it gets put on the back burner for far too long. I dont know if it is just the fact that the MLB season is such a grind or what but I find myself losing interest in my franchise mode by the All-Star break. I also cannot get into online play due to their issues with lag in the past.

This year it sounds like the big improvement is something I have no interest in. I'll try out the analog pitching/hitting/throwing but I suspect I will want to use "classic" controls.

Yeah most demos dumb that stuff down. For me there is more to play than ever before, investing time in a baseball game just isn't for me this year.

Don't let me do that! Go ahead and play the demo. Maybe you will love it. My opinion is only good for me. I used to love the Show and I still remember playing the Show '06 at Future Shop and being hooked on it immediately. I've just played a ton of games on the Show and it's gotten a little stale for me in a few areas. It's still a huge seller for a baseball game - over 600,000 copies on the PS3 alone each of the last two years.

Played 1 game.

#1 I agree the graphics/sound are a lil off but I'm thinking that's just the demo to save file size.

#2 Good lord at the Ks - I had 7 and the CPU had 9.

#3 I like the analog pitching - it made it harder to hit spots and was pretty fun.

#4 I HATE the analog hitting - maybe more time and i'd get used to it but to me its too hard to time that AND move the left stick up/down/left/right to swing. I think I only made contact like 3 times (2 weak ground ball outs and a fly out to center)

I think its still a solid title. The problem for me is the major "improvements" this year are things I don't really like all that much. So that means the question is it worth $60 for a roster update. I unfortunately traded away 10 so I'll prob pick it up but I might wait until a price drop.

You don't use the left-stick with analog hitting. There is no zone hitting at all with this method since it makes it impossible like you said. You just pull down and then up on the right-stick to swing. You do have to direct the stick towards the ball (left, middle, right) but the height of the ball is irrelevant. Just work the right stick.

LOL well that simplifies things quite a bit. Perhaps I should try again w/o trying to move both the left and right sticks at the same time while hitting.

Played a few more games today and the analog hitting is growing on me a bit. I think a tutorial would help.

Questions I have

#1 How do you bunt?

#2 Are there power/contact swings and if so how do you do each?

It's MLB The Show and its solid I'm just trying to decide if I would devote enough time to it to make it worth the purchase.

I can't remember bunting. It might be just pushing up on the r-stick without pulling back.

There are power and contact swings (contact is new). By default it's normal. Before you swing hit :ps3sq: for power and maybe X or triangle for contact. I think you have to do that for every swing during the at bat as it always defaults to normal.

Yeah in the past you just hit :ps3x:or :ps3sq: (I think) as the swing button.

Like I said after fooling with it the timing wasn't as bad as I thought it was. An indepth what does what video might do wonders. In the end though I'd prob stick with classic running and classic hitting and classic throwing. I'd prob use/keep the analog pitching as it actually provides a challenge.

Rudy
02-25-2011, 09:10 AM
If you use a second controller and play co-op it opens up the camera. Unfortunately the camera editor isn't as good as I hoped. You still can't get that distant behind the pitcher viewpoint I prefer as there is a limit to the zoom out (i'm currently using pitcher 1 with 3,1,10 zoom options in 2K10). It still is very close to the plate. And for the batter angles you can't increase the distance between the pitcher and batter. I like the 2K batting camera where I look big and the pitcher farther away. I can't create that. I can just change the overall zoom. I think the camera editor is too limited.

If any of you guys are ever up for some online games let me know. Of course, that is a dangerous assumption that Sony fixed the lag issues. My #1 Complaint about The Show has been lag issues. Here's a blog on another new feature, Challenge of the Week (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/03/07/mlb-11-the-show-arrives-tomorrow-meet-the-challenge-of-the-week/)

Challenge of the Week is a fast-paced and fun arcade-style mode where the goal is to score as many points as possible. You’re the batter and you get thre outs with thre strikes per out. Your overall score consists of your points and Momentum (aka multiplier). The longer the hit, the more points you get. The better the hit and the more momentum you earn. There will also be weekly bonuses to help with racking up points. Challenge of the Week will feature the hottest batters and pitchers during the MLB season so check back to see if we feature a player from your favorite MLB team.
To play, simply go to the “Challenge of the Week” option on the main menu of MLB 11 The Show and select the current Challenge.

So what do you get if you’re #1 on the leaderboard at the end of the week? Real-world prizes! We’re talking about signed MLB gear, Sony Electronics, gift cards, the works!

Just played my 1st game. I'm waiting on the OS full minors roster before trying to start a franchise. I played Cubs (Me) v. Pirates (CPU) on All-Star difficulty.

I won the game 3-2 on a walk-off 2 out 2 run double by DeWitt. The game was allot of fun but I SUCK with the analog hitting striking out 21 times. :smh:

Well, if it makes you feel better, I haven't won a game yet (about 8 games played). Oh, and I have hitting on the level below All-Star. In my defense, I've only used a team not named "Astros" twice. Once, I used the Pirates and once I used the Cardinals (but faced Greinke and his 90 mph change up). My last game was a 8-7 loss in 16 innings as the Astros playing at the Mets. Grrrr. I K alot too, CLW (usually low double digits) but 21 - wow!!

I've mostly been playing RttS while waiting for rosters. I'm already in May of 2012 (Starting Pitcher), lol.

I honestly believe the difficulty settings are messed up. I played 5 or 6 games on the easiest difficulty, and even though I won all the games, I didn't score more than 3 runs in any of the games. I switch over to Legend to get the trophies for beating the Yankees and the Dodgers on Legend, and I end up scoring 3 against the Yankees in a win, and 15 against the Dodgers in a win. The 15 is more than all the games I played on easy combined. :D

For me, yes. I really enjoy the mode, it is leaps and bounds better than EA's best offering (NHL). I don't know if you've played it before Jeff, but I really enjoy being able to play for an hour or two and knock out a whole month, lol. I had 09 and played as a first baseman, this time I decided to go the pitching route and that really speeds things up.

I was drafted by Washington and started in the pen at AA Harrisburg. I got traded in July (without asking for it) to San Diego and was assigned to AA San Antonio. That was a good move for me because I got more opportunities to start. I played the last few weeks of 11 in AAA Tucson. In the offseason, I signed for 3 years with San Diego and started 12 back in AA San Antonio but was promoted back to AAA Tucson after 3 or 4 appearances. I'm now the 5th starter in Tucson and there is only 1 pitcher in the organization that is a lot better than me (SD has no pitching) but it's cool because the Padres have 5 or 6 young arms with "A" Potential. I'm excited to see if we're able to mature together.

I had whatever the first version of The Show was for PS3. And I enjoyed RttS a lot, but it did get old pretty quick. I was able to dominate with pitching, but wasn't able to hit worth a damn. So every RttS was either a dominant pitcher or a hitter languishing in the minors. I've been keeping my eye on it since they made a lot of changes to RttS's hitting, where you get credit for effort (for lack of a better word right now) rather than just a 0 or 1 with results. I like that idea very much.

My problem with RttS in 09 was finding balance. It seemed that a single minor slider tweak was the difference between hitting .150 and .450. I can't tell you for sure, after a week, if that's still the case but I'm having fun. I don't Walk enough batters (or Walk enough when batting) but that seems much better than 09. In RttS, I have about 100 Ks and only 20 BBs with my pitcher. However, in an Exhibition Game against the Padres tonight (I was the Astros), I K'd 7 and Walked 4 while the CPU K'd 8 and Walked 1. I can live with that, and hope I can get it even better with more practice and tweaking.

The training point system seems a lot better so far, just as you suspected. I'm in year 2 and still have a long way to go before being dominant. I'm inconsistent at this point. If I make the Majors in year 2 it will only be because the Padres have such a bad rotation at this point, not because I've levelled up too quickly or I've become dominant.

I got the game mostly because I still have credit at Game Stop, but I wasn't going to get it without selling myself on the idea of playing a full 162-game season when rosters come out. That's still my intention. In 09, I only played RttS and, while I didn't feel I wasted my money, I did want to do more with 11. That being said, I'd still say 11 is worth a look just for RttS. However, if you became bored with a previous version of RttS, I can't promise it won't happen again.

I think my timing was just off in Game 1. Played on All-Star again last night in an Exhibition game Cubs (Me) @ Cards (CPU). Won the game like 9-4. I only K'd 3 times.

Most importantly I hit an inside the park home run with Soriano to get a gold trophy. He crushed a ball to deep center and the Centerfielder jumped/crashed into the wall and the ball bounced around forever before anyone could pick it up. Waiting for the OS rosters b4 starting a franchise and RTTS modes but this game is definitely solid. Hoping I can find a good set of sliders.

I finally won a game, beating the Marlins, 5-4 with Houston. I blew a 4-2 9th inning lead, but got a lead off single in the bottom half. I brought in a pinch runner and tried to steal 2nd. The catcher threw the ball over the SS and into center where it went past the CF who was in a bad position to cut it off. the runner scored from first. I am a little concerned that each time I've had a 9th inning lead, I've blown it. Maybe it's just the Houston factor, lol.

At least the Astros and Cubs both have a shot at finishing ahead of the Pirates. I won't admit that the Astros have bottomed out until they're looking up at Pittsburgh, lol.

I didn't play 10 and I've always done my own for every game anyway. I just look at slider threads for input on what affects what (in non-obvious situations). Particularly with The Show, I'm probably way behind the curve so using someone else's sliders would probably be bad for me. I want realistic stats for my skill level. I'm not sure I'm good enough to get them with someone else's sliders.

The Show's Community Manager (Russell over at OS) has released a list of changes for update 1.10 (which he, incorrectly, calls "1.01". Here it is...

Below is the list of fixes for title update 1.01. We are still testing bugs and other issues that the community has reported for a second more comprehensive title update.

"Jackson" available in last name audio database for created players

Collision issues...ARZ and SF... fixed where the ball would roll into and out of the stadium

Fixed the issue in Manage only Mode....you are locked out from moving your controller when accessing the pinch hit...defensive sub

The double switch screen(after pinch hitting for the pitcher in the bullpen screen.....it works if you have your pitcher on the mound) also won't let you move the controller OR even hit X to keep your position player in the game.

Fixed the bug where you couldn't practice swing if it was going to be a pitchouts..

Fixed the stutter issue on the catcher throwback

Fixed franchise bug where team records show 0's on initial team select screen

Generated players in season modes now have a variety of generic stances, instead of one. Use subset of custom batting stances to randomly assign the generated players

Fixed online post game lock, having to do with controller assignment when your opponent goes into the Quick Menu>Bullpen

I'm feeling good about my slider set right now. I haven't made a change in a week and I'm liking the results. I'm fairly certain that I have my set to start playing Franchise once the OSFM rosters are ready. There are a few things that I won't be sure about until I get into Franchise (ie errors, injuries, fatigue, base stealing), but what I'm seeing so far is very good.

Also, I've gotten my Ks under control. While I'm still only drawing 1-2 BBs per game (generally), I only K'd 4 times in my last outing (but was still shutout). Generally, the scores, hits, Ks and errors are spot on in the games I'm playing.

I doubt it will make a difference to anyone who has considered purchasing this game but is turned off by the lengthy season, but I thought I'd mention it. I played a full 9-inning game a few days ago using the Fast Play settings. Fast Play eliminates all of the presentation and replays and takes you from one pitch immediately to the next. The game was completed in 32 minutes.

Yeah there are definitely ways to speed the game up. Personally I use Real Time presentation with no replay. I think my games usually last around 45 mins to 1 hour (similar to NCAA). Hoping the OS full minors roster comes out this weekend so I can get started on my Cubs franchise.

Just wanted to see if anyone else is trying to do a full 162?

I started with the Astros as soon as the OSFM rosters dropped. I entered all the injuries manually (love that feature) and I'm now 64 games in (only 98 to go!!). My Houston club is 27-37. I'm good with that record, it's been a real challenge. The presentation in this game really keeps it interesting even after 64 games and being 10 games under .500.

I'm workin' on it. I got the initial OS rosters and a set of OS "perfect" sliders that seemed to be getting allot of praise and I'm through like 24 games right now with the Cubbies and I am right around .500. My pitching has been great but my offense has SUCKED big time. My best hitter is hitting like .260 and I have multiple guys hitting below .200

From Pasta (http://www.pastapadre.com/2011/02/07/mlb-11-the-show-fact-sheet):

As I read through this, I think every sports game should have such a detailed summary of features. Too many games rely on the hardcore audience to supply the feature lists, even close to release.
