January Game Informer:

http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2010/12/06/january-cover-revealed.aspx

Forget what you know about Lara Croft. As of today, all that is changing.

In our world-exclusive cover story, we uncover a brand-new Lara Croft. Rebooting the Tomb Raider franchise through an origin story wasn’t so much a choice as an act of necessity, according to Crystal Dynamics. Drastic measures were needed. To build an entirely fresh Lara – a culturally relevant hero worth of the attention that once came so effortlessly – they must break her first. In this new adventure – simply titled Tomb Raider – a younger and inexperienced Lara Croft must endure both physical and emotional trauma to survive.

Make sure to check out the Tomb Raider hub throughout the month of December for more exclusive details about Lara Croft’s rebirth. The hub will launch later today.

We've got two logo treatments for the new cover. You can see one in the front cover image below, and the other in the full wraparound spread that's a little further down the page.

http://media1.gameinformer.com/imagefeed/featured/square-enix/crystaldynamics/tombraider/jan2011_cover_b.jpg

In addition to the ten exclusive pages of Tomb Raider details, we’ve got a full book of other compelling content. Jeff Cork takes a look at gaming on the other side off the world, diving into policy and practices in Iran. Additionally, Annette Gonzales broke a sweat by rounding up and breaking down all the current Kinect fitness offerings at retail. Also, don’t forget to check out our previews of Dead Space 2 and L.A. Noire.

The January issue of Game Informer will start arriving in subscriber’s mailboxes this week, and will hit newsstands the 11th of December.

I never fully got into Tomb Raider earlier on. Kind of interested in seeing what this reboot will look like though.

My brother used to play Tomb Raider on the PS2 and I always thought it was boring as it focused on the exploration side too much. It was a little bit too sci-fi for my liking as well. If it was truly a female Indiana Jones it would appeal to me more. Just like Uncharted on the PS3. I do like the PSN game though.

She looks WAY too much like Milla Jovovich:

And I personally never cared for the Tomb Raider games because I'm not much for 3rd person exploration games like that. Now, if they make it more interesting with a truly interesting story that doesn't just feel like a bad ripoff of an Indiana Jones flick, then I might be more interested.

More details: http://www.gamefocus.ca/?nav=new&nid=12085

Leave it to the Internet to purge exclusive facts before those facts are supposed to go public. According to this NeoGaf post, some of the details of the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot have been revealed, snatched from the next issue of Game Informer and it’s exclusive story.

First, Lara is still a pup, starting this adventure at a mere 21 years old. The intent isn’t just a reboot of the franchise, but a reboot of the character itself. It’ll be a much darker game, pitting players with the need to truly survive during the journey, foreging for food, water, even making her own weapons. Death will be brutal. The examples given were things like a boulder falling on Lara’s leg, trapping her, then another falling on her head or being stabbed in the chest.

The game sport will be a free roam/open world take, dumping the linear levels of Lara’s past. The gun play will also change, shifting to an open-aim system. The main theme seems to fall back into the survival of the experience. Crystal Dynamics wants the players to feel it just as much as experience it. Lara as a person will evolve throughout the game. Her physical skill set will be limited initially, but as she progresses, she’ll be able to craft bigger and better things and acquire more acrobatic moves, which will in turn open up newly accessible areas that she previously couldn’t get to.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I’m really liking what I’m hearing. Lara has been in desperate need of something just like this. Not just the franchise, but the character too. She’s grown old and stale over the years. It’s nice to see Crystal Dynamics move her out of her comfort zone and recreate what is arguably one of the most influential characters of the mid-to-late 1990’s.

I am getting very stoked for this game on Tuesday. A guy on OS has it and loves it. The thing I like most about it is that it is supposed to be very similar to Uncharted but without the overly linear and restrictive gameplay. Tomb Raider is more open world. You can explore at your own pace and look around. That's the one thing I liked a lot more about UC1 than the next two. UC2 and especially UC3 became too cut scene driven. The pacing was always fast as though the developers were shouting, "Hurry up and get to the next cut scene. Move, move!" As soon as you go through a door it would get blocked and prevent you from going back. It started to get on my nerves. Tomb Raider still has a linear story but it won't be so closed minded.

Downer (for me at least) is there are a TON of multiplayer trophies for this game and given the reviews I'm betting the multiplayer function in this game is going to die down pretty quickly so... I guess I'll mess around with it for awhile and maybe get decent or at least get to the point to where my kill/death ratio is 1/1 instead of 1/2-3 that it is right now on UC 3. :smh:

I honestly don't care and it makes no impact on whether or not I play a game, but there's definitely "good" and "bad" lists. Having a ton of multiplayer trophies/achievements in a single player based game like Tomb Raider is just dumb, IMO.

Spec Ops The Line had a very good list.

I do agree that trophy lists can be dumb. Madden's lists were terrible demanding you get gaudy stats and with specific people. Too many online trophies are crap for me. I never get half the trophies despite the fact I play some games a lot. If I play 100 games of Madden 13 I should have more than 15% trophies. At least give me some long termlay goals for sports games like 100, 200, etc career passing TDs, or other things regardless if I'm online or not.

While I don't care much about trophies I do get annoyed if I play a game a lot but the game makes it look like I haven't. I've never achieved one platinum. Not sure how I got a few golds really.

There are no spoilers in this although maybe some minor ones just in general gameplay talk.

I’ve played about 2 hours so far and I’m not sure how much I’ve completed but I’ve gone fairly slow. So far it has been a lot like Uncharted – very linear and story based. I like the story and enjoyed the opening. I also like the fact you control the pacing. You can go back and explore areas after getting things done. That’s one thing that would irritate me about Uncharted 2 and 3 – there was always a boulder or a building falling down that blocked you from going backwards. You reach certain camp bases which allow you to quickly travel to your other camps if you want although I haven’t used that option yet.

There hasn’t been a lot of combat so far but I’m getting into more now. It does appear there are a lot of different weapons you can get during the course of the game and they can be upgraded much like your hunting and combat skills. There is an RPG element to this game that I wasn’t aware of but it’s good. Using cover appears to be automatic and you can use stealth kills too. I’ve got a bow and a gun right now and I do like how you can pull back extra hard on the bow for more power. The bow is good for silent kills too. The game teaches you how to do things in the early going. I started on Hard but for some of the combat stuff I was dying pretty easy so I switched to Normal. If I find that too easy I will switch back.

There are quite a few quick time events (qte) in the game. They were a little fussy with the timing on Hard but you have to be on your toes for some fast action scenes. I like the music and it adds to the game. In Uncharted you would search for treasure and I always found that fun. In this game you search for supplies as well as relics and documents that explain some of the story. It's useful although I haven't found it as fun as searching for the UC treasures. I am not using the "survival instinct" tool to help find anything. I want to keep hunting interesting. I haven't found any secret tomb stuff either lol.

It’s very early but so far I enjoy it. I’m not blown away but it’s good.

Rudy
03-06-2013, 08:59 PM
I think I'm missing a lot of things. There are a TON of things to find from relics to journals, etc. I got my first tomb and there is a camp in there. I'm going very slow. I was confused on what to do for quite awhile tonight and found myself using the help L2 function quite a bit. I wasted quite a bit of time wandering. I swear I've played 3.5 hours and only completed 12%. I don't like rushing into things as I'm nervous as to what's around the corner. It's a little slow right now but I love using the bow and getting silent head shots.

Worth a hurry up and get it for $60 buy, or wait til it's $30?

Rudy

Worth a hurry up and get it for $60 buy, or wait til it's $30?

That's up to you JB but I think you can wait. It would take awhile to get it for $30 but if you wait a couple weeks you might find a used copy for $40. I took that approach with UC3 and I think it's a prudent one unless you really want to play online multiplayer. I have no idea how that is though.

Give me another couple hours to see how I feel about it but it's been a little slow in the early going. Again, I've been lost and clueless for a bit lol.

Edit: The first 10 to 12% was definitely on the slower side from a combat perspective. It definitely picked up since then. I like the different strategies you have to use in combat. In Uncharted you just wanted to find cover and then you were invincible for the most part while you picked off guys. Or you would just try to get near guys in a gun fight to take them down physically. That is something I have avoided with Lara. You aren't that strong so while you can stun them it is not wise to get into fights with anyone. Plus the enemy does a good job of flushing you out and making you move. I'm very leery or nervous when I move around lol. Very happy the pace has picked up.

played MP a bit yesterday and i suck but it was pretty fun. started the campaign and i am really enjoying it. i'm roughly 20% the way through and like UC after a slow start it really picks up. i'm having a hard time finding allot of the hidden stuff but i'll just play through it again later once a really good trophy guide has been setup.

Rudy
03-08-2013, 04:07 PM
Same for me. I'm missing a lot of stuff and I started to go back this morning to get some things but it ended up a bit of a waste of time. You do go back to some camps throughout the game I believe (I just hit one spot where I am going back) so I will just do all that stuff at the end if I feel like it. I'm enjoying the increased combat now. The first part was definitely slow but i enjoy this more. I'm about 26% right now.

CLW
03-09-2013, 03:22 PM
ok i've played enough of the campaign now to say this is right up there with Uncharted as my favorite game of all-time. I've had a blast and Lara Croft takes an absolute BEATING in this game and I'm not even finished with the campaign. It starts slow but once it gets going its pretty much non-stop action. I LOVE how the game plays so different depending on what tactics you decide to go with before a combat sequence. Go low and have to use cover in a gun fight or pick them off from up high; stealth etc...

really a blast and if you enjoyed the uncharted series at all i highly recommend you pick this one up. i don't think the Tomb Raider people are as good as naughty dog but its definitely a solid play.

I agree. If you like Uncharted you will like this game. Similar in a lot of ways. This game gets better the more I play it. Lara gets more bad ass in both hand-to-hand and weapons as you go along. I do like the control of the RPG like upgrades. I'm 37 or 39% done now. It's taking me awhile and I'm glad. This will probably be the perfect length for the game.

I am trying to find as many things as I go but I think it's best to go back and find stuff you missed when you are all done. You can be fooled into thinking you can get some stuff but you need things you acquire later in the game to complete some things.

Finished my 1st play through the story mode and WOW that was fun. Best game I've played since uncharted. I don't think the story is done quite as well as Naughty Dog does it with Uncharted and likely the Last of Us but worth every bit of $60 and I'll start going for the 100% now. This is definitely a reboot Jeff and for that I'm glad. It's a lot closer to Uncharted than the original TR games. I found the original ones lacking - too much exploration/puzzles and not enough action. And the action was goofy in that you were fighting non-humans from what I remember from watching my brother play those old games. It's a big reason why I bought this game - it wasn't like the old ones. Anyone expecting something along the old games might be disappointed.

I didn't realize the map will indicate the location of the tomb once I get close enough to it. I missed a tomb when I was close by and I should have just used my map. What do the treasure maps do? Is there a way to tell which tomb on my map I completed CLW?

I found the original ones lacking - too much exploration/puzzles and not enough action. And the action was goofy in that you were fighting non-humans from what I remember from watching my brother play those old games. It's a big reason why I bought this game - it wasn't like the old ones. Anyone expecting something along the old games might be disappointed.

I didn't realize the map will indicate the location of the tomb once I get close enough to it. I missed a tomb when I was close by and I should have just used my map. What do the treasure maps do? Is there a way to tell which tomb on my map I completed CLW?

Yeah the maps should indicate a tomb as a "point of interest" or an actual tomb depending on how badass you have made LC. If you have completed a tomb I imagine (i haven't done 1 yet so I don't know) it will be filled in on the map like it is when you find a relic; book; etc...

I've done two of the tombs but I know I've missed at least one. The last one I went into I got confused and turned around - very dark. There are 6 in the game so I hope to get most of them.

There hasn't been many puzzle elements but I like how they are done. They aren't like Uncharted which were more Indiana Jones type of secret code things. Some of those were really good while others were frustrating. In Tomb Raider they are more realistic - how do I get from point A to point B by using the things around me.

I like how the trophies are set up to reward longer term goals - kill 25 guys with weapon X get trophy X, etc. I'm starting to achieve more of them. I was only 7% the last time I checked but I've gotten a couple more since.

CLW, did you finish the game at 100% or were you short of that? Guys on twitter are saying that's the total finish percentage and not how close you are to the end. I'm at 42 or 43% but that may mean I'm closer to the end than I thought. I kind of hope not. I want this thing to keep going.

I just met back up with Sam who they tried to sacrifice. I'm now sneaking around in the caves using stealth on guys. Am I getting close to the end?

The save % is the %complete not how close the story mode is to finishing that tricked me too. I ended up finishing the story mode at 67% complete and I did 0 tombs and 0 challenges. I'd say you are approx 3/4 the way home still quite a bit to go.

This is definitely a reboot Jeff and for that I'm glad.Yeah, I know. I just think it's funny that they've remade it to the point that the Tomb is an afterthought. I think they could still make it so it was Uncharted-like with the Tomb still being the major set piece. But maybe not.

It's more of a commentary from an atmosphere/design perspective than anything else. I certainly have no love lost for the tombs.

You do go through Tombs that are NOT side missions. In fact the main story line involves around LC "raiding" a tomb so that she and her friends can escape the island.

I really like this game but Uncharted is better in a few areas.

1) Side characters like Sully and Elena were cool. I don't give a crap about anyone else in TR.
2) Relic hunting and document hunting and all the other hunting you do in TR is optional and exhausting if you do it. It gets tedious.
3) Environments are much more varied in UC. In TR it's almost always dark and/or raining and the different areas aren't very memorable.

On a positive note I love how you control the pace and can travel back to different areas.

Yeah I agree UC is a better game but TR is pretty solid. I'd have to go back and play the original UC as well to see how they compare in terms of the side characters but I agree they could/should have developed more of LC's friends but then again she's pretty much by herself for most of the story.

I don't think the relic/document/gps/map hunting is any more/less tedious than it is in UC. They are pretty much the same to me other than at least in TR getting all that stuff gets you extra XP and gives you more story details than just looking at pretty artifacts in UC.

I'm going through my 2nd play through now (i'll have to play through the story once more if i want the :plat: b/c I missed a trophy in the 2nd play through) but I'll have to see how hard/bad MP is.

Just finished my 2nd playthrough getting all the docs, relics, gps, maps, etc... and had a blast again. I still need to beef LC up with the weapons but I think I'll take a break from the game for awhile as grinding out what's left trophy wise may prove to be more trouble than I'm willing to go through. I know the online trophies are supposed to be a real pain and I still have to play through the story again b/c I missed one of the talk to everyone trophies. :smh:

Which Uncharted are you guys talking about? I'd agree that Uncharted 2 is better than Tomb Raider, but that's it. Uncharted 1 was very good but it got tedious after awhile. Uncharted 3 was just an uninspired cash grab that didn't really grab my attention until about 3 or 4 hours left in the game. Uncharted 2 > Tomb Raider > Uncharted 1 > Uncharted 3, IMO.

UC1 can get repetitive in the first half with the excessive gun play scenes. I like that one the most though. Some of the overly scripted stuff bugged me quite a bit in UC2 although most think that was the best. UC3 was the worst without question imo. Poor story and it was way too linear with far too many cut scenes.

UC2 was definitely the best, the train sequence was simply amazing. What I did not care for was the times it went all supernatural in 1 & 2.

The supernatural stuff didn't bother me. I thought it actually made the story better, BUT, I can certainly see how that would annoy some people. I loved Uncharted 1. Uncharted 2 was simply a masterpiece of one of the best best games made this generation. Uncharted 3 was good, but it took so long to get interesting. By the time I was intrigued, it was over.

UC2 was definitely the best, the train sequence was simply amazing. What I did not care for was the times it went all supernatural in 1 & 2.

The story parts of the train brought on some of the most annoying parts of the game for me. First the game opens with having to climb up the train after it crashes. What was the point when you controlled nothing? You couldn't screw up the platforming - it was just one scripted animation after another while I just held up on my controller. That bugged me and I had to pretty much do it a second time later on too. And the boss fight on the train was brutally scripted. I had my shotgun ready for the boss who has no armour and I am pumping bullets into him with NO affect. The game wanted a fist fight and so bullets meant nothing. It was things like that and constantly having my path to where I came from blocked that annoyed me in UC2. I was disappointed with the first half of that game but really enjoyed the second half.

I had no problem with the supernatural elements myself. I can see how some didn't like them but the Indiana Jones movies always had stuff like that so I don't know why it would bother people so much.

Finally completed it at 81%. I got most offline trophies although I could work some more to get some upgrade trophies, the GPS cache trophy and the pull 5 enemies off a cliff trophy. I must have put in more than 25 hours on this game. I wish it would have tracked my time spent.

I agree. Uncharted 1 did not sell as well as the next two but set the table. You can't reboot a franchise and expect everyone to rush back and buy that many games. That may be realistic for the sequel given how well received it was but not the reboot.

UC1 sold 4.56 million copies while UC2 sold 6.14 million copies. UC3 was 5.79 million. Granted that was PS3 only but that was over the life of the game. TR will still sell.

Here is the VG Chartz sales chart for Uncharted. It only sold 2.3 million in the first 1+ years (released November 2007) and doubled over the length of the game's existence.

ear Yearly Change Total
2007 761,429 N/A 761,429
2008 1,564,427 105.5% 2,325,856
2009 705,609 -54.9% 3,031,465
2010 573,664 -18.7% 3,605,129
2011 487,759 -15.0% 4,092,888
2012 422,649 -13.3% 4,515,537

It has sold almost 2 million so far. Since when is that a disappointment? Publishers are so flaky these days. If it doesn't sell 10 million on each platform like Call of Duty, it isn't a success. :fp:

For a reboot of a game that hasn't been spectacular in recent years, they should be happy with what they've got so far. We're at the point in which it'll start going on sale more, which should lead to increased sales. Expecting as much as they were, though, IMO, was a bit unrealistic.

Finally finished this one and have to say that it is easily the best cover system in game so far. For me it was like playing Uncharted 4 early and I can't wait for the next Tomb Raider. Though they really need to go deeper with the tombs and like I complained earlier, I hate the supernatural crap...

which floods you toward the end of the game, including the next to final boss. Also ending with a QTE on the final boss was annoying.

Uncharted 2 is still the best of them all. :P

It supposedly takes a TON of time to get that trophy... 12+ hours if you boost/cheat (with the single player online online get the medic pacs game) or 25+ hours otherwise.

EDIT: looks like the most recent patch took out some time on this and there is a reported glitch where all you really need to do is buy all the characters power down and then back up and the trophy will pop cutting your time in half. Might have to start working on this one this weekend if that is the case.
