Why do so many SEC teams schedule non-conference (especially FCS) schools this late in the season? Wouldn't a BYE week be more productive in some regards?

With Auburn and Oregon both off this week ... I'd go with Stanford - Cal, simply because it's a rivalry game. Otherwise Ohio St/Iowa or Nebraska/A&M.

Oklahoma at Baylor could be interesting only because the Sooners are terrible on the road... Also, am I the only one who believes Florida Atlantic could beat Texas?

Truthfully, out of all of those, I think Fresno State @ Boise State might be the biggest one with how Fresno State nearly beat Nevada.

Maybe Stanford @ Cal but the propensity of Cal to just fall off the map makes me think that Stanford will probably just rip into them.

Arkansas State @ Navy... probably decides ASU head coach Steve Roberts' fate. If he manages to win the last two (@Navy & @FIU) then he would finish 6-6 and likely earn a bowl appearance. Otherwise he will likely be gone with the hope that first year OC Hugh Freeze would take over. If we had any home games left, I'd have this t-shirt I mocked-up actually made:

I believe so as well, though we do have a former coach that used to be a master of the Flexbone coming back this week to help the team learn how to defend it. He's the same coach that taught LSU how to defend it for their bowl game against Georgia Tech. We'll see.

I almost guarantee someone hits that wall hard. We got retaining walls installed a few years ago that are bout 6 feet from the back of the endzone. At the time, they weren't padded at all and on the first or second game, we had a player run into the wall and get gashed having to sit out for 4-5 weeks. Since then, we've had quite a few players get run into the wall including a couple of weeks ago in a really raining condition went sliding headfirst into it.

I wonder if they will put a padded wall up eventually, but since there is already Allstate advertising on the wall, it looks like it won't be.

I'm fairly certain that is padding, just painted to look like ivy. Still yet though, a player going full-boar into the wall, six inches of padding won't help much.

they do everything at Cowboys stadium, boxing, concerts, college football. I wouldn't be surprise if they started doing basketball or hockey games(if they haven't already). that thing cost a lot of money, and Jerry never got any major sponsorship help like he wanted(at least I don't think so, which is why it's called Cowboys stadium instead of a sponsorship name)

Though looking at the configuration I've seen, it won't be all that much better than the Wrigley Field game. It won't be quite as dangerous, but the seating will be atrocious with some fans facing the action at crooked angles.

Far cry from running into a wall. Having hit the boards in a hockey arena, and hit a concrete wall full speed, I can vouch for the difference.

That is an unbelievable mistake with Wrigley. Who gets the axe for that decision? It's not even safe enough to play on 1/2 of the field? Fired, fired, fired! Those poor fans.

I'd say someone within the Big Ten is to blame, this was laid out MONTHS ago....

http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/press_releases/press_release.jsp?ymd=20101119&content_id=16156886&vkey=pr_chc&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc&tcid=tw-chc-misc94

CHICAGO - Cubs President Crane Kenney today released the following statement in response to tomorrow's rule changes for the football game between Northwestern and Illinois at Wrigley Field.

"The Chicago Cubs are surprised by the Big Ten's last-minute statement regarding changes for tomorrow's Northwestern-Illinois football game at Wrigley Field. Let there be no doubt: the safety of the student-athletes has been - and remains - the number one priority since the concept of this game was first discussed more than a year ago, and all parties have gone to complete lengths to ensure student-athlete safety for this contest.

"The essential item in our negotiations to host the football game at Wrigley Field was obtaining approval of both universities and the Big Ten for the field dimensions as related to player safety issues. The field dimension layout was delivered to the Big Ten approximately eight months ago and was approved by the conference. Last month, the field was built exactly to the dimensions previously approved by the Big Ten. Last week, a Big Ten official performed an on-site visit at Wrigley Field, participated in a field walk-thru and raised no issue with the field dimensions, painted lines and boundaries previously approved by the Big Ten.

"This game would not have been scheduled if it did not pass the strict and meticulous standards of everyone involved, a process that began more than a year ago. All are in agreement Wrigley Field is a safe venue to host a football game. Other baseball parks, including tomorrow night's game in Yankee Stadium, feature similar football field-to-venue grid dimensions and rule changes are not considered for football games played in other baseball parks.

"We have reached out to the Big Ten to further discuss the playing field. While we are surprised by this morning's last-minute statement, all agree that tomorrow will be an historic event and a wonderful experience for the fans, the schools and the student-athletes."

I disagree. It's still just a relatively meaningless game between 2 run-of-the-mill programs. Why would the fact that it's being played on half a field give it any extra appeal? I could almost understand, if they were playing on the entire field, being interested to see if that wall factors in. But, as is, it's just a bleh game on half a field. Now, if there is some sort of downpour, that may be interesting.

NCAA rules state that there must be so many feet behind each end zone, so either the Big Ten or NCAA (depending who approved game at Wrigley) screwed up.

I thought Northwestern was the smart kid school. No one there figured out ahead of time how much room would be left around the playing field? Now, Illinois I understand screwing up. :P

Ohio State's offense looking horrible ... again.

Pryor has ridiculous arm strength, but he just will not fire deep passes -- he floats them, they get hung up in the wind, and bad things happen. Corey Brown nearly got his head unscrewed (how is that not a facemask?), and Pryor throws an interception because he throws behind, and late, on a post route to a wide, WIDE, W I D E open receiver.

South Carolina did it last season against FloridaWeird ... somehow I time-traveled and went from 2009 to 2010.

I seriously thought I saw them do it just a few weeks ago. I guess it had to have been last year, so boy was I off.

So in addition to 87% of the Husker drives having a flag.....it has been reported that the referees had attended the A&M pep rally.....not sure if that is true LOL

Yeah but we don't exactly own the corner in that market. Everyone has some crackpots for fans.

I personally think there is something to the discrepancy in penalties called in Nebraska games this year. I don't necessarily buy the whole "the big 12 is out to get us theory" however you can't ignore some of the numbers and trends this year. I personally think it's a combination of the way Pelini treats the refs, our record under Pelini as a highly penalized team, AND the fact that we are leaving and the conference almost broke up (which woulda cost the refs their jobs and may have left a few bitter). Add all of those up and we will NEVER get the benefit of the doubt and maybe just maybe a few refs look a little closer at us and a little over the top at what other teams are doing. Below is a pretty decent article summing up some of the irregularities.

ODD PENALTY NUMBERS (http://omaha.com/article/20101123/BIGRED/311239928#penalties-raise-big-red-flags)

The most notable stat I've heard so far has been that it's been something like 260-270 plays since a team has been called for holding against us. Against one of the top 10 defenses in the country, that number doesn't wash to me. Especially since anyone can see our DLINE's shoulder pads being grabbed at every opportunity, most notably in the 4th quarter of the A&M game. Also, the roughing the passer call on Courtney Osborne that extended the game winning drive for A&M was one of the worst calls I have EVER seen.

With all of that being said, we didn't play well enough to win Saturday. 6 pts on offense isn't going to win a lot of games even with the defense we have. Our offense is FAR too reliant on a skinny little douche who runs straight up and down (albeit very fast) to stay healthy all season long. Watson needs to start calling plays to Cody's strengths when he is in the game, which means NO DAMN ZONE READS!

I'd add that ABC commentator Ed Cunningham's rants about Eric Martin and Courtney Osbourne didn't seem to help the cause as the refs Saturday at College Station seemed more than willing to flag them when involved in anything....and TV replays never showed what Martin's flags were supposedly for.

Yeah but we don't exactly own the corner in that market. Everyone has some crackpots for fans. True ... but ... I have never seen a fanbase manage to start a rumor that the starting QB was transferring, nor manage to get the coach on the record ANSWERING that rumor. Then, what, a day later, the refs are suddenly at the pep rally for the opposing team? I'm not saying that Nebraska fans are more ... passionate ... just I've never seen stuff like this come out after a loss.

FWIW, if I was working a game in College Station, whether I'm a broadcaster, ref, whatever ... and I'd never seen Yell Practice ... I'd go. Perception of impartiality be damned, that's a spectacle to see.

The most notable stat I've heard so far has been that it's been something like 260-270 plays since a team has been called for holding against us.The interesting thing about that article is that it seems like that kind of stuff is true for most top tier teams. Ohio State's opponents have been the least penalized in the Big Ten for years. Or at least they were last time I looked, and were for the bulk of my collegiate experience. One of the downsides to being a top dog, I suppose.

Actually it wasn't the fan base that started the rumor...it was one of the student coaches after Martinez wasn't at the meeting.

Though a student coach should know better ... geez.

For the record it wasn't exactly an unfounded rumor... Martinez walked out of practice in the middle of the QB competition during fall camp & the coaches convinced him to stay. It would not shock me at all if he quit/wanted to quit & Pelini coaxed him into coming back again. I would venture a guess that there's more to the story than Pelini let out the other day. The kid is a drama queen/daddy's boy. Would not surprise me even slightly if he transfers in the offseason. As crazy as that sounds, when you know the underlying drama, it's not a stretch.

As for the yell practice conspiracy I couldn't agree with you more. Some people are just ridiculous. Even if they were at the pep rally, who the hell cares. Even if they were doin lines of coke with Pelini the night before the game off of Sorority girl who plays Herbie Husker that still wouldn't change the fact that they are horrible refs! :D

Didn't know that about the penalty stats and big time teams. The thing is that any one or two of those things by itself would not give me a second thought about it. However, when I see all of those things put together it gives me pause. Especially the part where Eric Martin has been the only player suspended by the Big 12 EVER!
