In addition to the most uniform combinations and the most luxurious locker rooms of any school in the nation, Oregon will soon be able to lay claim to the country's most original basketball floor.

Oregon officials unveiled the floor of newly built Matthew Knight Arena on Friday (http://www.goducks.com/ViewArticle.dbml?ATCLID=205025431&SPSID=4297&SPID=235&DB_LANG=C&DB_OEM_ID=500#), and to say the least the design lives up to the school's reputation for cutting-edge panache and flair (http://www.uniwatchblog.com/2010/11/06/o-my-god-what-the-duck/). The court is framed on all sides by a forest of fir trees, an homage to the school's picturesque Pacific Northwest setting and to Oregon's 1939 national title team nicknamed "The Tall Firs."

Kilkenny Floor is named after Pat Kilkenny (http://leadership.uoregon.edu/about/kilkenny/pat_bio), a long-time supporter of Oregon athletics who served as the school's athletic director from 2007 to 2009 and ran the recent coaching search to replace Ernie Kent. In the center of the floor is the slogan "Deep in the Woods," which is meant to intimidate opposing teams. (Yes, seriously)

Considering Oregon's deep-rooted ties to Nike, it shouldn't surprise anyone that Tinker Hatfield is the designer of the floor (http://www.goducks.com/mediaPortal/player.dbml?&db_oem_id=500&id=732184&DB_MENU_ID=&SPSID=4297&SPID=235&DB_OEM_ID=500). Hatfield, a former Oregon track and field star and vice president of design and special projects for Nike, designed many of the shoes from the famed Air Jordan line.

"When I was asked to work on the new floor for Matthew Knight Arena, I really boiled it down to three things," Hatfield said. "I really wanted to pay tribute to Matthew Knight himself, to the Kilkenny family and lastly but maybe not least, I wanted to pay tribute to the Pacific Northwest and the Tall Firs, the original basketball team that won a national championship for the University of Oregon in 1939."

I think it looks cool, but I don't understand why you would have a white three-point line that goes into the white center art area of the court. I'm guessing reviewed three-pointers will be fun for refs in the Pac-10 this year.

It's hard to say without seeing it in action. But, who would expect anything different "over the top" from Oregon.

I can understand why Oregon would want to do it. I understand why the attention-whore Pac-10/12 would want the attention it will get.

I don't understand why the NCAA would allow it.

Um... yeah... um... well... er... um... what is there to say really? I don't like it and/or I don't get it. It's just really... weird...

That's the part that I don't understand. I wouldn't be surprised to see someone challenge that to the NCAA or whoever and try to get Oregon forced to change the 3-point line to a different color. That'll completely screw up teams otherwise, since you'll have absolutely no fricking clue if you're shooting a 3 pointer or not in the heat of the moment and don't have time to look down closely at the floor to pick out the line against the white background.

Here are some pretty funny (great yet bad? :P) photoshops of other courts mimicking Oregon's new style (http://network.yardbarker.com/college_basketball/article_external/ducks_court_inspires_photoshop_clones/4143981).

I would CRY if they ever even thought about that at Duke. :smh:

Although the Louisville one with Col. Sanders was pretty funny.

The court was at the center of controversy last night in the deciding game of the CBI.

The Creighton committed an over and back call which only seemed to get called by the ref after the Oregon defender pointed it out.

As you can see in this pic, the half-court line is not visible.

In this video (http://yfrog.com/5bvq1z), you can see on the zoomed in shots the half-court line is actually two thin lines that at certain points are covered up by the court design.

The NCAA is going to have to mandate that the lines be solid and consistent in all basketball venues.

The court was at the center of controversy last night in the deciding game of the CBI.I have to admit, I'm amazed that it didn't cause a problem before this.
