Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film will be called “The Dark Knight Rises” and though the Gotham City auteur isn’t ready to reveal the villain of his 2012 film, he did eliminate one of the big contenders: “It won’t be the Riddler,” Nolan said in an exclusive interview with the Hero Complex.

Nolan was most eager to talk about the fact that Warner Bros. had agreed with his argument that the film should resist the current 3-D craze and instead use high-definition approaches and IMAX cameras to strike out on a different cinematic path than the stereoscopic technology that, for better or worse, has become the dominant conversation in the blockbuster sector.

As for the title, it shows the writer-director’s intention to keep his Bruce Wayne trilogy tightly stitched together. “We’ll use many of the same characters as we have all along, and we’ll be introducing some new ones,” Nolan said cryptically.

Agreed.

Some buzz that Hush could be the villain....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hush_(comics)

I don't read the comics, but thanks to Wiki I'm kinda up on a lot of what goes on over the past couple of decades. It's amazing how many twists and tangents the entire Batman story has taken within the comics.

I don't see how it could be him unless they totally rewrite Hush's background (since he's pretty tied to Bruce's background with them growing up together and all and having not been introduced before, wouldn't make much sense).

Not to mention how closely tied Hush is to The Riddler.

I just don't see it being him but I wouldn't be disheartened if it turned out to be him afterall.

From IGN: http://movies.ign.com/articles/113/1133672p1.html

Six beautiful actresses are reportedly under consideration for the two unspecified female leads in The Dark Knight Rises.

Deadline claims "one of the roles is a love interest for Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne, and the other is a villain." The six actresses are Natalie Portman, Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway, Naomi Watts, Rachel Weisz and Blake Lively.

Portman, a Star Wars vet, is no stranger to comic book movies having appeared in V for Vendetta and the forthcoming Thor. Knightley starred in the Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy and also was up for the female lead in Captain America: The First Avenger. Hathaway was rumored to be playing either the Black Cat or Vulturess in Spider-Man 4 before Sony opted to go the reboot route instead. Gossip Girl's Lively plays Carol Ferris in next summer's Green Lantern. Watts' genre films include The Ring and Peter Jackson's King Kong. Curiously enough, Oscar winner Weisz, whose stateside breakthrough came in The Mummy, has long been rumored for the role of Catwoman in the film.

That's quite an age range between actresses; the eldest is Watts at 42, the youngest Lively at 23.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

(my vote is for Portman and Hathaway...they'd fit the style of the movie the best IMO)

We wish we knew how to quit Heath Ledger's Joker. While his tragic passing may have slightly inflated the legend of that performance, its power and intensity is still one of the few things that fans can agree upon almost universally. So, one can imagine going into the upcoming third film in 2012's The Dark Knight Rises, that he'll leave a noticeable gap that may be hard to fill. Well, according to a rumor reported by ShowBizSpy, thanks to the miracle of technology which put Fred Astaire in vacuum commercials and Marlon Brando in Superman Returns, that gap may at least be somewhat filled. Their "sources" are telling them that director Christopher Nolan plans to use cut footage of Ledger's Dark Knight performance as the basis for a cameo in Rises. So, while even in the best scenario, we won't be graced with another Oscar-winning performance, it may be a nice gesture to both Heath and the fans that bridges the gap between this film and the last. So, should we be "so serious" about this latest tidbit? Or is it just the weekly wacky Batman rumor?

According to ShowBizSpy's source:

“The idea is to use these fragments of cut scenes and use CGI to have The Joker appear one last time,” reveals a movie insider. "Chris wants some continuity between movies and for the franchise to pay tribute to Heath and his portrayal of the Joker. It would only be a fleeting moment in the movie and would only be included with the full consent of Heath’s family.”

A posthumous Ledger cameo is certainly a rumor that's within the realm of possibility. Even if only for a few seconds, it's obviously something that fans want to see, and would even be consistent with the theme established with the Scarecrow in The Dark Knight, featuring a cameo of the last film's villain. Unlike the last series of Batman films by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher, which went for the indulgent narrative wrap-up by killing its villains in the end of each film, this "cameo" method creates an atmosphere that more accurately reflects Batman's perpetual quest of battling his villains countless numbers of times. It's a concept that plays true to the idea of what the Caped Crusader's story is all about.

I think it's pretty safe to say that people would be all for this cameo across the board. So, the question remains: Is this rumor legit?

I just hope they do it well, if they do it. They have a good track record so let's not ruin it. I mean the Joker was caught at the end of Dark Knight so not sure if you really need anything more than that.

I mean they brought Scarecrow back in Dark Knight and he got caught as well without any further explanation.

Christopher Nolan says Heath Ledger will not appear in 'The Dark Knight Rises'

Christopher Nolan and producer Emma Thomas have swatted down an internet rumor that unused footage of the late Heath Ledger as the Joker in The Dark Knight would appear in the highly anticipated follow-up The Dark Knight Rises, according to The Hollywood Reporter. At an awards season reception for Nolan’s 2010 film Inception on Tuesday, Thomas, Nolan’s producing (and life) partner said, “I heard the rumor. We’re not doing that.” Nolan also made clear that, although the script for The Dark Knight Rises isn’t yet finished, he felt Ledger’s performance should live in 2008′s The Dark Knight alone.

Aaron Eckhart: No Two-Face in 'Dark Knight Rises'

Stephen VaughanSo Harvey Dent did die at the end of The Dark Knight after all. Some fans had speculated that his Two-Face would somehow be resurrected or awoken from a coma to seek vengeance on Batman in The Dark Knight Rises. Not so. At least that’s what Aaron Eckhart was told by Christopher Nolan, according to MTV News. “Chris and I had a meeting, on the beach, just the two of us,” Eckhart said on Thursday. “I said, ‘Chris, a lot of people are asking me if I’m in the next Batman.’ And Chris said, ‘Yes?’ I said, ‘Am I?’ He looked at me and he said, ‘No.’ … I was heartbroken. But Chris has his reasons and my life must go on.

Chris Nolan To Meet Actresses For Batman 3

EXCLUSIVE: Chris Nolan is lining up actresses he'll meet for two female lead roles in The Dark Knight Rises, the third installment of the Batfranchise which Warner Bros has dated release on July 20, 2012. I'm told one of the roles is a love interest for Christian Bale's Bruce Wayne, and the other is a villain. The actresses are: Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, Blake Lively, Natalie Portman, Anne Hathaway and Keira Knightley. Nolan is keeping the roles under wraps, just the way that he did when he drafted his Inception star Tom Hardy to come aboard to likely play a villain. Deadline broke that story October 13. I'm still not sure what the role is and I believe Hardy took the job without knowing or reading a script that's still being tweaked.

Marion Cotillard 'in Discussions' to Join 'Dark Knight Rises'
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/sites/default/files/2011/02/MCa_a_p.jpg

Her rep tells THR that "nothing has been confirmed yet," but the move would reunite her with "Inception" director Christopher Nolan.

Marion Cotillard may join the cast of The Dark Knight Rises.

A rep for the actress in Paris said that her involvement in the film is currently "in discussions, but nothing has been confirmed yet." WB France has yet to comment.

The actress, who is pregnant and due in the spring, is discussing scheduling issues.

The plan is for Cotillard to start shooting mid-June in London, film all summer in L.A. and Pittsburgh and wrap mid-November in New York.

The French actress' name has arisen before in connection with the Warner Bros. movie, which will be directed by her Inception helmer Christopher Nolan.

Nolan had been focusing on finding the romantic lead for Christian Bale in recent weeks, reading and meeting with several actresses, including Kate Winslet, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts, according to insiders.

While Anne Hathaway is cast as Catwoman, the other female role is suspected to be that of Thalia Al Ghul, the daughter of the villain played by Liam Neeson in Nolan's first movie, Batman Begins.

French newspaper Le Figaro reported the deal was official, and Cotillard would join the production this summer.

The Pittsburgh Film Office announced today that the city has been chosen to host the production of Warner Bros' The Dark Knight Rises, which is set to begin shooting this summer. “We are thrilled to be welcoming the Batman film to Pittsburgh, and eager for the economic impact that our city will experience,” Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said. “This is another example of the growing film industry in our community, and we will be rolling out the red carpet for them." Said director Christopher Nolan: “Pittsburgh is a beautiful city. We have been able to find everything we were looking for here, and I am excited to spend the summer in Pittsburgh with our final installment of Batman.” The last film in Nolan's Batman trilogy is slated to premiere July 20, 2012.

Warner Bros. has announced the official casting of Oscar winner Marion Cotillard and Joseph-Gordon Levitt in Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film, The Dark Knight Rises. Cotillard will play Miranda Tate, described as “a Wayne Industries board member eager to help a still-grieving Bruce Wayne [played by Christian Bale] resume his father’s philanthropic endeavors for Gotham.” Gordon-Levitt will play John Blake, described as “a Gotham City beat cop assigned to special duty under the command of Commissioner Gordon [played by Gary Oldman].” Both actors appeared in Nolan’s 2010 smash Inception. They’ll join Anne Hathaway (playing Selina Kyle) and fellow Inception alum Tom Hardy (playing the villain Bane), who were formally cast in January.

Aware that a direct assault on Batman would be foolish, Bane destroys the walls of Arkham Asylum, allowing its deranged inmates (including the Joker, the Scarecrow, the Mad Hatter, the Ventriloquist, Firefly, Cavalier, and Victor Zsasz) to escape into Gotham City, where Batman spends three months rounding them up. Running himself to exhaustion, Batman returns to Wayne Manor, where Bane awaits him, having determined Batman's secret identity. Bane fights Batman in the Batcave, defeats him and delivers the final blow: Bane breaks Batman's back, leaving him paraplegic; Bane thus becomes the only man to have "Broken the Bat".[3][4]
While Bane establishes himself as ruler of Gotham's criminal underworld, Bruce Wayne passes the mantle of Batman to Jean-Paul Valley, also known as Azrael

Well, this clip certainly wasn't directed by Christopher Nolan -- it doesn't quite have his auteur's vision -- but for fans hungry for anything from "The Dark Knight Rises," this fan-captured video offers a whole treasure chest of information.

Shot in Wollaton Hall in Nottingham, England -- the stand-in for Wayne Manor -- the blurry camera footage captures Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne confronting Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle. Rain (or, hose water) pours down as the two talk, and soon Kyle leads Wayne away.

What it means, well, no one's quite sure. But at least we now know what Wayne Manor looks like from the front, and that Batman and Catwoman have a plain clothes confrontation.

As for Hathaway's Catwoman costume, sources recently told Hollywoodlife.com: "Anne's outfit is more tactical, like the comic book, than the previous Batman movies," a source very close to the costume design told the website. "She will definitely be wearing the goggles and it's going to be less sexy than Halle Berry and Michelle Pfeiffer's Catwoman costumes. She's going to look more like a robber... But fan boys shouldn't be worried. This costume is going to be form-fitting enough to make Anne look smoking hot."

Also joining in the film will be Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a Gotham detective, Marion Cotillard as Miranda Tate, Tom Hardy as Bane and, of course, Gary Oldman back as Commissioner Gordon.

NatureBoy found this http://www.cnn.com/2011/SHOWBIZ/Movies/07/15/dark.knight.trailer.ew/index.html

(EW.com) -- The first teaser for next year's "The Dark Knight Rises" is airing in front of a little movie called "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2."

For those of you who missed the "Hallows" midnight screening because you're too tired/too busy/too no-longer-a-college-student, here's the lowdown on the "Rises" preview.

It kicks off with a montage of scenes from "Batman Begins," with Bruce Wayne walking over the frozen tundra while Liam Neeson narrates his speech about becoming "A legend, Mr. Wayne." "Every Hero Has a Journey," say the intertitles. "Every Journey Has an End."

Cut to: A shockingly intimate shot of Gary Oldman's Commissioner Gordon, lying on a hospital bed, breathing through what appears to be an oxygen mask, speaking in a tremulous voice.

He tells someone offscreen -- it's pretty clear that he's talking to Batman -- that people believed in him, but then, suddenly, "You were gone. Now there is evil rising. The Batman must come back."

From offscreen, Christian Bale's voice -- and this sounds specifically like his Bruce Wayne voice, which could indicate that Gordon has figured out Batman's true identity -- says, "What if he doesn't exist anymore?" Gordon, sounding like a man who hears his own death rattle: "He must...he must..."

There's a quick shot of Tom Hardy's Bane in his weird mask which literally looks exactly like that photo from a couple months ago, then a long shot of buildings collapsing which literally looks exactly like that poster from a couple days ago, and then the real attention-getter: A single shot of Batman, braced for a fight.

Bane steps into view. We only see him for a second, from over his shoulder, but he looks huge. For the first time in the Nolan "Batman" that I can remember, the Caped Crusader actually looks a bit scared. (The shot only lasted for literally two seconds, but I could've sworn Bats was wearing a new outfit.)

A final title promises, "The epic conclusion to the Dark Knight legend," while terrifying chanting plays in the background.

All-in-all, it's a weird way to launch the year-long lead-up to "Rises." In my sold-out "Potter" theater, there was nary a cheer or clap after the trailer, which either indicates that everyone was stunned into confusion, or I somehow found the one theater in the country filled with people who had no feelings whatsoever about "The Dark Knight." Let's try to decode the trailer with some theories:

-- When Gordon tells Batman, "You were gone," it seems like an indication that, following the climax of "Dark Knight" -- in which Batman become a hunted fugitive, Bruce Wayne decided to retire his alter ego.

Maybe "Rises" will be about his attempt to start a new, normal life -- kind of like Peter Parker in "Spider-Man 2" -- only to get called back into service after the arrival of Bane.

The haunted man of violence who tries to lead a peaceful life, only to be forced by circumstances and fate to return to his old ways, is a recurring plot point in the films of Michael Mann -- a director who has had a huge influence on Nolan's work.

-- What's up with all the destroyed buildings, and why does Gordon look like he's on life support? For hints, look back to the storyline that introduced Bane to the Batman mythos.

In "Knightfall," Bane freed Batman's Rogues' Gallery from Arkham Asylum and set them loose on Gotham City, creating relentless mayhem and sending the city spiraling into anarchy.

People have theorized that the strange chanting is coming from Arkham inmates. It's possible that Gordon was injured by Bane -- or perhaps even targeted. As for the buildings, here's a wild idea -- could it be that Nolan is flavoring his story with elements of "No Man's Land," the other great Batman story arc about a citywide descent into anarchy?

Sure, "No Man's Land" seems a bit fantastical for Nolan's realist mythos...but then again, so does Bane.

-- Lastly, a note about that shot of Batman and Bane. When you think about it, all of the villains in "Batman Begins" and "The Dark Knight" weren't really all that physical; the Scarecrow and Ra's al Ghul were both most dangerous when they were getting inside of Batman's head, and the Joker openly scolded Batman at the end of "Dark Knight" for thinking that their battle would just come down to fisticuffs. (There were also various gangsters who did various gangster things.)

It's interesting, then, to consider that Bane is such a beast of a man -- you can tell that these two dudes will wind up fighting each other tooth and nail, just like Schwarzenegger and the Predator (or, more recently and hilariously, the Rock and Vin Diesel in "Fast Five.")

And something about the finality of all the intertitles -- "Every journey has an end, the end of the Dark Knight legend" -- makes me wonder if "Dark Knight Rises" will be a genuine ending.

Like, not a "Superhero flies off into the night, forever hunting evil" ending, but an old-fashioned "This story is over, it will not begin again" ending ending. (Remember: When Bane met Batman in the comics, this happened.)

And since Nolan, Bale, and Warner Bros. are adamant that the Dark Knight series will end with this film, you have to wonder: Could this be the first superhero movie with a genuinely unhappy ending? Could Christopher Nolan's Batman die? Or at least be very badly injured?

We'll post the trailer as soon as it becomes available online. In the meantime, did anyone else out there see the pre-Potter trailer? What did you think?

Are you surprised that the trailer focused so heavily on Bane, with nary a shot of Anne Hathaway or Joseph Gordon-Levitt? Anyone else intrigued by the fact that "Dark Knight Rises" is apparently building so strongly on "Batman Begins," a film that "Dark Knight" really kind of ignored?

Could this join "Toy Story 3" and "The Return of the King" in the tiny pantheon of trilogy-enders that are actually good?

My guess is that just like Batman in Batman Begins, we'll get some of her backstory and the costume will evolve throughout the movie. The Catwoman poster above looks different than the pic from yesterday.

JBHuskers
08-06-2011, 12:25 PM
I wonder which backstory they will use?

Early version with not much backstory:

Catwoman, then called "the Cat", first appeared in Batman #1 as a mysterious burglar and jewel thief, revealed at the end of the story to be a young, attractive woman (unnamed in the first story), having disguised herself as an old woman during the story and been hired to commit a robbery. Although the story does not have her wearing her iconic cat-suit, it establishes her core personality as a femme fatale who both antagonizes and attracts Batman. It is implied Batman may have deliberately let her get away, by blocking Robin as he tried to leap after her. She next appears in Batman #2 in a story also involving the Joker, during which she wears a fur mask and again succeeds in escaping Batman.

Revised version from 1986:

Catwoman's origin—and, to an extent, her character—was revised in 1986 when writer Frank Miller and artist David Mazzucchelli published Batman: Year One, a revision of Batman's origin. She works as a prostitute in order to survive and wants to break away from her abusive pimp (and former boyfriend). She witnesses his crimes and, because of an event that occurs to her sister, fears for her sister's life and begins to study self-defense and martial arts. Her teacher inspires Selina to become more than what she has been and she realizes that prostitution is no life for her, or for "Holly".

I doubt they use the Batman Returns version where she falls and a bunch of cats start nibbling on her :D :fp:

Info on TDKR viral marketing (http://collider.com/the-dark-knight-rises-viral/131043/):

After The Dark Knight launched its viral “Why So Serious?” campaign way back in 2007, the movie obviously went on to be a smash. How much of that was due in part to alternative marketing is up for debate, but with The Dark Knight Rises just around the corner, it’s no surprise that we might be seeing the beginning of another viral run-up. Recently, The Wrap (via Movie Viral) interviewed Jeff Robinov, the President of Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, who said that the “marketing strategy will definitely evolve” from the previous Batman installment.

Hot on the heels of that quote, Empire and Wired (via Movie Viral) received two separate “CIA documents” concerning a Dr. Leonid Pavel. While that name doesn’t yet ring a bell, readers over at ComingSoon connected Pavel’s mugshot to that of actor Alon Aboutboul, who has a role in The Dark Knight Rises.

Pavel (Aboutboul) is a nuclear physicist of Russian descent who specializes in fuel-cycle technology and reactor design; he has gone missing. The edited transcript appears to be between a CIA Station Chief at the US Embassy and a member of the Georgian militia discussing the handover of Dr. Pavel.

The docs:

The Dark Knight Rises’ Tumbler Designer (http://tumblerdesigner.com/), exclusively revealed by Wired, is a worthy way to bring back the ominous vehicle, which director Christopher Nolan rechristened for his film trilogy (although its clearly influenced by the Bat-tank from Frank Miller’s 1986 comic The Dark Knight Returns).

According to Warner Bros., the online designer was built using the The Dark Knight Rises’ 3-D models for the Tumbler (camouflaged versions of which have been spotted within the vicinity of the upcoming movie’s big bad Bane). The interactive tool gives users 360-degree views during the customization process, during which they can choose from an array of preloaded colors or upload their own patterns and images. Bullet heads can even add a machine gun or rocket launcher. (Check out Wired’s crimson Batmobile above.)

Once created, the custom mods can be downloaded as wallpaper and shown off in The Dark Knight Rises Tumbler Gallery or the usual social networking suspects. The rebooted Batmobiles can also be taken for a virtual spin on the test track at Wayne Industries‘ Applied Sciences division, by their creators and other interested parties. Those paying attention will note a special section of the testing area wherein Tumbler jockeys can customize the track background as well. Interesting little piece in an article that I just read. Never really thought about it as just figured Nolan was done with Batman but this could be an interesting possibility down the road. I think it's far fetched but you never know.

http://www.eonline.com/news/329756/the-dark-knight-rises-a-guide-to-who-s-who-as-gotham-city-meets-its-biggest-threat-yet

John Blake: Like Tate, not much is known about this young Gotham police officer played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt except that he supposedly represents the crime fighting idealism that both Batman and Gordon have lost over time in their battles. It wouldn't surprise us in the least if Nolan leaves the door open to rebooting the Batman franchise with Blake filling in for Wayne in the cape and cowl.

Well I'm probably not exactly in the target demographic for Hollywood. ("My" t.v. watching is almost exclusively business news; politics and sports) I usually DVR most programs (with the exception of :Duke: basketball) so by default its "hard" to get me to pay attention to commercials. My wife watches allot of "train wreck t.v." as I like to call it. We RARELY see movies in theatres. Prior to The Hunger Games I think the last movie we saw in the theatres was either the last Indiana Jones movie or The Blind Side (whichever came last).

JBHuskers
07-20-2012, 10:00 AM
So it was a pretty epic movie....

I like how TDKR basically brought everything full circle eight years later from TDK. The original plan of the League of Shadows trying to destroy Gotham was still in full motion in a very large scale. It was great seeing the aerial shots of the city after everything was blown up. Seeing Gotham with a new "government" in charge was really well done. It was hilarious that Dr. Crane was the judge.

The iconic scene when Bane breaks Batman's back was there and looked really damn cool.

Anne Hathaway was great in her role as Selina Kyle. Never called Catwoman (which explained IMDB). And god damn she's hot.

As soon as Blake tossed his badge into the river at the end, I knew he was going to become the next Batman after Bruce. That whole ending scene with Gordon discovering a new Bat Signal, Alfred on vacation and finally sees his dream of seeing Bruce and they don't talk, and Bruce leading Blake to the Batcave via GPS. Was just a perfect damn ending to the trilogy.

After re-watching it in the marathon last night for the first time in a couple years. Regardless of death, Ledger's performance of the Joker was still legendary.

Also after re-watching The Dark Knight:

I really did think that it opened the door for the return of Harvey Dent. I still thought that leading into the opening of The Dark Knight Rises.

morsdraconis
07-20-2012, 03:09 PM
So it was a pretty epic movie....

Not quoting your spoiler to not hurt anyone's chances of it being ruined, but my take:

I saw Batman not dying coming. I was watching it, saying, "He's not going to die". Also, I knew that Marion Cotillard's character was bad when Bruce was having sex with her and touched the Ra's Al Ghul marking on her back. Didn't think that she was actually the child that escaped from the prison, but definitely knew that she was linked to it somehow.

I was pretty much disappointed with the film. I found Bane to be INCREDIBLY boring. The voice acting TOTALLY took me out of the film because it was obviously dubbed over and didn't sound like it was coming out of his mouth at all (though it was definitely his voice). Anne Hathaway did ok, but she'll never beat Michelle Pfeiffer in Batman Returns. Bruce and her's playfulness just wasn't correct at all, whereas, in Batman Returns, she's batshit crazy but Bruce is still incredibly attracted to her. Selena Kyle was too pragmatic in this film for my liking. They should have done Harley Quinn instead. Could have actually killed off Joker and had the fanatical and totally insane Harley Quinn take his place and it would have been AMAZING.

Overall, The Dark Knight is just a far superior film, as I knew it would be. Take of Batman and Joker from The Dark Knight and just make it an insane guy causing havoc and a vigilante guy taking the law into his own hands and you'd still have an AMAZING film.

That said, I'm probably still gonna go see it again tomorrow with some friends.

The other problem is if you get notified of new post via email. It doesn't even have the spoiler tags, luckily I've just been deleting them in my inbox without opening them :D

I thought it was really cool that...

Nolan re-created this iconic scene...

I thought the Bane character and the voice was done pretty well myself. I wish the ending could have been a little bit more explained.

This series is easily the best series of films that I have ever watched. The way that all three films are linked and that I couldn't rate the films in order from 1-3 by which one is best. All three films are equally good. I do favor the first film though.

I know. Not everything is a fucking partisan issue. There were people (Limbaugh) thinking Bane was a shot at Romney.

Just left the theater and the only trilogy of movies that may compare to how awesome these movies are that I can think of is maybe Lord of the Rings. Didn't think it could possibly be as good as the second one was and boy was I wrong. Phenomenal.
